“Oh, that's a real issue. My son never had any of that. He peed with no problem because the very tip of the penis was uncovered. I understand when there is a medical necessity or a religious reason but doing it for the sake of looking certain way is just wrong, IMO. Your son is really tall, that's for sure! My "bebo" is tall, but I doubt he'll get as tall as your son. He can only dream :-)”

“Maybe not dream to hard. When your stuck in class looking three grades older then everyone else and a head and shoulders taller it can put a target on your back.”

“Your comment is linking STD rates with one specific factor, circumcision. If that was the case, Europe, where the rate of circumcision is much, much lower than the US, should have a higher rate of STD's. Is that true? Where do you get the idea of circumcision as a way to lower STD's. Maybe in Africa, but they do really have a whole bunch of other issues as well. I will venture to believe that Europeans are more alike to Americans than Africans, but somehow they don't have an STD problem, without circumcision I must add. I don't think STD rates have anything to do with circumcision. If that was the case, Europeans will be infested with STD's, which we know is not true. ”

jonkatz139 on Aug 21, 2012 at 20:22:15

“For whatever it's worth, STD rates actually are higher in Europe than they are in North America... I posted a link in another comment to you, but it hasn't yet made it through the moderators.

And, yes, I put more credence into controlled studies on this matter (Africa studies being one of them), than I do in the loose correlations that you are trying to make.”

“It is tradition as well. "Uncut" women are tought as loose and are obviously stigmatized. They are not considered good marrying material and the family is by extension considered of poor morals (since it is the parents who make the decision of having their daughter cut). So, those mothers are convinced that they are doing it for their daughters' sake.”

“If circumcision significantly reduce the transmission of STDs, we can conclude that STD's are significantly higher in Europe than in the US, right?”

jonkatz139 on Aug 21, 2012 at 20:06:07

“But... If my previous answer was too complicated for you to understand, then here's an easier (though far more meaningless) one:

At least according to the first site that came up in my search, curable STD rates actually are higher in Europe than they are in North America:

Infected adults per 1,000...
North America: 19
Western Europe: 20
Eastern Europe & Central Europe: 29

http://www.avert.org/std-statistics.htm

jonkatz139 on Aug 21, 2012 at 19:49:22

“Wrong! We can't conclude that! Overall transmission rates involve far too many other factors...

Keeping with my original analogy, that's like saying that we shouldn't install air-bags into American cars because one can find other countries that have fewer air-bags installed in their cars and have fewer fatal car accidents per capita.”

“I think that process takes place during puberty. It happened to my husband and our son as well. I didn't know that was the way. Remember, my husband is an adult, so I didn't know anything about how the penis of a small child look and function like. Well, I was concerned 'cause I tought the foreskin of a child should retract just like an adult. My husband explained to me that that is part of the changes that take place during puberty. My son is now a handsome 6"1' , 14 y/o young man and his foreskin retracts with no problem, as reported by dad :-)”

chatnuptime1 on Aug 21, 2012 at 19:30:59

“carester that is good. Your son is quite tall for his age. As is mine. 16 and 6 foot 9 . But as the doc said by five you should at least be able to see the glands at the top. My sons was completely buried and the urethra had extra tissue plugging it up causing him to get bladder infections.”

“That's my impression. I wasn't born nor raised in the US, so this was not an issue I had ever thought about it until I moved here. It looks to me that it is done for cosmetic and social reasons. Parents don't want their sons to look different and suffer because of it. In a couple of decades small-breasted women will be considered "weird," so parents will have to take their daughters to plastic surgeons to comply with the norm and prevent social stigma. At least where I live, Miami, we are getting closer and closer to that.I worried 'cause I have a 10 y.o. daugther.”

“Exactly! In those countries, mothers subject their daugthers to that atrocity because otherwise they'll be socially stigmatized and won't find a decent partner to marry. An "uncut" woman is considered to be loose and her family of low morals. So, in their minds, they are doing it for their daughters' sake and their families' honor.”

“Both are performed, for the most part, as a way to meet social expectations. Mothers who subject their daugthers to this kind of atrocity do it for the sake of the girls' own future. Uncut women are tought as loose, so they are not desirable as wife material. They can't aspire to marrying into a good family. Not cutting her is stigmatizing her for life. That's the way they see it.”

“I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you have no personal experience with FGM or have done much traveling in parts of the world where it's practiced, because if you had either I doubt you would conflate the two practices as you do in your above post.

http://www.wunrn.com/news/2009/10_09/10_05_09/100509_fgm.htm

Read this account and then tell me how similar male circumcision and FGM are simply because of "social expectations." With that logic we might as well compare FGM to ear piercing or pink hats, because "hey, social expectations" and all.”

“But his making a valid point. One of the main reasons mothers circumsize their daugthers is to make them more socially acceptable, especially to spousal prospects. Circumsized girls are more appealing to men because they consider those women good wife material, coming from families of good morals. Not doing it will severly limit the girls chances to find a good prospect of a husband. It's like virginity in other countries.”

“I wasn't raised in the US, so to me the whole issue seems rather shallow to be honest. From the view of this "outsider" the issue is social standard of aesthetics. Imagine al things that can be justified following that same line of thinking. I'm already worried about my daugther's future in the time when boob jobs are becoming more and more the norm (especially in Miami, the city I live). Sooner than we think small-breasted women will be considered "weird." A lot of young boys are growing up seeing women surgically "enhanced" as the normal, standard look.”

“What I find concerning about this whole issue is the "looks" argument a lot of people make. Imagine that kind of thinking. In a couple of decades small-breasted women will be tought as weird. "Loving" parents will think it is their duty (as it's already happening), for the sake of their daugther's future, to give them a boob job as soon as possible. It is my understanding that it's quite common for girls in Colombia to be given boob jobs during the summer break of HS and the beginning of college. So, not a lot of people will notice the change. Their mothers believe that's a good thing because small-breasted women don't look femenine and are more self-concious. They are enhancing the girls self-esteem, putting them on the path to sucessfully mating as well. It's already hapenning here in Miami, believe it or not.”

See George Clooney for example. Now, imagine that dilusional thinking on top of inmaturity and lack of parental guidance. Perfect recipe.”

“I come from a place where women are punished for whatever society perceives as moral transgression. Obviously, sex (which you know is the cause of pregnancy) is the biggest one. Pregnant girls are forced to drop out of school. It was something I never thought about since it didn't happen to me. I left my country at 19. I am now almost 33 years of age. I now see how stupid, sexist that attitude is. Every time you punish pregnancy, women will be the target, for obvious reasons. It's all rooted in a desire of punishing, shaming, shunning, and stigmatizing the girls even further. A pregnant girl is already in a difficult position, why make it worst? Adults should know better. What these girls need first and foremost is SUPPORT to finish school and get an education for their children's sake, their own, and ours as society.”
