“The problem with the absolute ban is that it prevents the insurance companies from solving the problem. It's easily done--policy riders or set aside accounts that the individual would be able to pay into--comparable to a flex account. An abortion ban is an abortion ban, and that's not acceptable.”

Just like the VP can be used to break a 50-50 tie, he should be able to break a 59-41 filibuster.”

“Part of the reason is that it's hard to march in support of subtlety and nuance. The teabaggers are a crude sledgehammer, which is why they are able to garner so much physical presence. On the far left, anarchist are able to accomplish the same thing. Both speak to emotion and passion. Thing is, being emotional and passionate doesn't make you right. You can't fit truth on a placard. You can fit a swas tika on it. You can fit racial epithets on it. You howl about corporatist on it.
Truth takes more space.”

“The first comment really is hype, but the second probably isn't. Maybe not 30 years, but possibly 10-20. The history of the health care debate would support the argument that they will be a long delay before anyone will be in a political position to try something of this scale again. (Even as scaled back as this is.)”

“The question to ask is what would have happened if a less than perfect bill had been passed back then. Would the situation today be worse or better? Now take the current situation and project 16 or 17 years into the future if no bill is passed. Better or worse? I don't pretend to know the answer to these questions (and neither does anyone else who thinks they do). We do know, however, that the status quo of the past 17 years won't work for the next 17 years. Entropy rules the universe and without intervention, everything falls apart in the end. Just saying that these are the terms and timescales in which people should be thinking.”

“Not sure anyone would bark at it :-)
Because that's what people do. I'm not arguing that it makes sense. The stimulus would have been a better bill if it had been 1.1 or 1.2 billion. The political process, unfortunately, choked on the number. It does that. Hey--I hope I'm wrong and implementation is accelerated. Fight for the best, but plan for the worst.”

“I'm disappointed in the loss of the public option also. I still believe it's necessary to introduce a significant competitior to the private companies. I also do believe that the loss of it is a major defeat for the Dems. The loss of it, however, does not make the entirety of the bill useless. It's a foundation upon which to build in the future. It will be easier to fix what's broken in it than to start over from scratch. I'm of the school of thought that thinks that if it isn't done now, it will be 2016 AT A MINIMUM before anyone can touch this issue again.”
MaryanneAZ replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 15:38:54
“I doubt that our future will ever see a "60 vote" advantage for either Party. This is an incredible opportunity that likely will never occur again. If the public option or Medicare buy-in had never been in the Bill, then the Regulations themselves would have been fought. The insurance companies have to be very unhappy to offer policies to everyone regardless of their health status and without regard to their age or sex. Their target may ostensibly be the public option, but the real target is the Regulations. It just would have been much more difficult to argue that they have a right to reject insureds, and the public option gave them cover to defeat the Regulations.”

“The administration has always said that the implementation is stretched out in time to lower costs of deployment. There's no theoretical reason it couldn't be implemented faster, but most would balk at the yearly cost of that increased speed.”
lysistrata replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 14:53:55
“Why would most bark at the yearly cost of increased speed if it is a good and beneficial health care reform? Will we get higher cost for no better coverage? You don't put off a good thing for 6 years, if it is good you do it now. It stinks.”
