How Pizza Became A Vegetable Through The Magic Of Influence-Peddling

Commented Nov 17, 2011 at 16:12:35 in Politics

“Years ago, I was on the PTO board of my childrens' elementary school. One day, I was at the school kitchen trying to figure out logistics for grilling pancakes for an upcoming breakfast fundraiser. To my shock and surprise, I found that the kitchen did not have a grilltop nor an stove/oven top. All the food was ordered frozen and processed already. It was just reheated in the fryers or the tower oven units then placed on the lunch line. This pizza issue was lobbied by the American Frozen Food Association. It would be nice if there was a nice, beautiful salad bar at the schools so that the kids really could eat fresh salads, vegetables and fruits everyday. Or like the army used to prepare meals for the masses before they, too, outsourced their menu items... hot, fresh food prepared for the school kids with an eye on nutrition and what is best for their health. And yes, I ended up packing lunches mostly everyday for all four of my children. That really was the best option for my family.”

“My high school had a salad bar and it was actually more popular with the students than the pizza/fries/fried fish/etc (you had to choose salad bar or the re-heated mess). I wouldn't be surprised that if other schools added this option, you'd see more opting for the fresh salad as it has much more flavor and appeal than a reheated pizza.”
