“People need to stop dumping on this mother. Didn't he marry her? And we all know what a woman has to do to become a full-fledged movie star. Nobody is a saint here.”

MrsGreebers replied on Nov 09, 2009 at 15:08:31

“I think the primary issue is Mom's boyfriend, not the adult film industry which, contrary to what many people think, is full of working mothers. Add to that the instability of the jail term and you have at least an entertainable case for the father having physical custody.

Otherwise you're just arguing that moms automatically should get preferential treatment.”

Chicago, Obama, the Olympics, and the Murder of Derrion Albert

Commented Oct 03, 2009 at 02:55:42 in Chicago

“President Obama has called black men out numerous times for their lack of fathering skills and this has taken some courage on his part. What would you have him do--fly to Chicago and take over the police investigation? I am going to presume that the Windy City has a police department. I am frankly getting tired of this level of constant criticism of our president. Why must you pile on? I am sure if his critics found out that he brushes his teeth twice a day, they would condemn him for wasting water and demand that he do it only once a day.”

Hegemoneyhoney replied on Oct 03, 2009 at 19:16:20

“Well, I think that it is because we do place so much hope and faith in Obama that we want him to LEAD on some of these very important matters. No, obviously he can't personally fix these extremely difficult problems, but he could LEAD. He is in a unique and extraordinary position to appoint a brilliant, wise, creative commission and charge them to come up with a PLAN, with blueprints for change in America's cities. Yes, it would have to include the mayors and chiefs of police and fire departments and education leaders, et al, but they would be charged to tell us all how to make things change, how to move things in a GOOD direction. We can all sit here and say, "it's the parents' job!" and it is - but what if there effectively aren't what any normal person would identify as a "parent", someone mature and responsible with the courage to actually guide and raise a child? What then? You want to blame and/or hold accountable a structure that virtually does not really exist in these demoralized areas. These are children raising themselves and children do not have the judgment and discipline, knowledge or moral framework to raise themselves (hence Mr. Powell's "Lord of the Flies" reference). They do have NEEDS, however, and they are the same developmental needs that any other child has. If they satisfy those needs in dysfunctional ways, then whose fault is that?”

slasherfic replied on Oct 03, 2009 at 10:09:38

“Great post and I will add that while Prez Obama has called out absent fathers, we have to remember that in the African-American community, the women are *picking* these guys to have children with. Most of these women know that these guys are felons or on their way to becoming felons yet these women (and in many cases girls) continue to have children with these criminals. As I said before, it is a cycle and in many many cases, these ladies are just feeding the criminal justice system. I have worked in the criminal justice system for over 30 years and you would not believe the number of cases I see where a young girl (15 or 16) has a a baby by a convicted felon on his way to prison. The baby's father is headed to the same prison where HIS father is incarcerated and where the baby's mother's FATHER is ALSO incarcerated. It's crazy....”

bkca replied on Oct 03, 2009 at 07:37:01

“I agree. No Obama fan, but why is he expected to do everything? This is a job for Chicago, not the president. Fix yourselves.”

“Amen, finally a rational thought on the fact that marriage exists for the benefit of children, and everything we know in the field of psychology tells us that children do best with both a mother and father. Get ready for the organized boo birds who do not want to admit that this whole turkey baster as father is merely a thinly veiled attack on men. Let's hear them minimize the role of fathers and even go so far as saying they do not matter.”

XLintLuvR replied on May 11, 2009 at 14:57:48

“Ummmm....that's why she lost her crown for saying things like that, which the author just described as being articulate. If what you said were true, then perhaps the gov't should outlaw divorce and outlaw any marriage that doesn't produce a child within 5 years. It's not an organization of boo birds. It's an organization of people that are tired of hypocrites that complain about gov't intervention unless it interferes with the lives of people that you don't like. When someone who says they're a Christian engages in hypocritical behavior, they're even quicker brought to heel because they don't usually just believe it. They're the loudest critics against something.”

Susan Bruther replied on May 11, 2009 at 12:32:48

“Actually love is what matters. If children have people in their lives who love them and help them foster a sense of self worth, they will grow up happy and emotionally healthy whether they are raised by gays or straights. Parental love isn't a right extended only to hetero couples.”

JimR replied on May 11, 2009 at 12:15:29

“So what if some yuppies spend lots of money to get a baby? That is their problem. No one owes them anything, especially a newborn member of a family that might give the young mother all the support in the world. Giving up a small human that you have carried for 9 months is a traumatic event and no "culture" can change this. Support is what these young people need.”

Commented Mar 13, 2009 at 02:01:27 in Living

“It is impossible to be objective about a subject as charged as this. No, it is not a good thing to have kids at too young an age, but adoption is serious business. Families belong together, blood is strong, and only a fool would deny this. I have a niece whose mother slamed her head against a wall when she was a baby requiring neurosurgery, barely survived. Do you know when that kid became of age, the first thing she did is track down her birth mother? There is just something so strong in the need to know about our ancestors. Too bad if people are waiting to adopt--don't trample on anyone's rights to satisfy anyone else. Right now many poor kids and minority kids are unnecessarily being taken into the system so agencies can get those Federal bonus bucks when adoptions take place. It is a national scandal, and people are just now beginning to take an interest in it.”

Tom Hanks, Sean Penn and Prop. 8

Commented Feb 26, 2009 at 00:39:06 in Politics

“Wow. You stated it simply and beyond reproach. I too am troubled by the hateful remarks made by Sean Penn and feel that this does not do his cause any good. If Prop 8 were held today, I bet it would pass by an even greater margin. Usurping the language of the Civil Rights movement is offensive. And these people cannot figure out why Blacks voted in great numbers for 8? And any guy who married Madonna has no business lecturing me about anything.”

mercury613 replied on Feb 26, 2009 at 01:58:05

“Beyond reproach? Hardly.

You're wrong about Prop 8 passing today with an even greater margin. Every year more and more people are accepting of the idea of same-sex marriage. Even with the LDS and Catholic churches' $35 million campaign of lies, Prop only passed by a few percentage points. The scales will tip as older voters die off and young people come of voting age. Even if the CA Supreme Court doesn't overturn Prop 8 (and I think they will), we have time, statistics and justice on our side, and nothing you say can change that.”

SD Indy replied on Feb 26, 2009 at 01:02:48

“I say we vote to take away YOUR rights. And see how you feel about it. With the number of Latinos we have in this state your rights would EASILY be taken away.”

But doesn't the livelihood of probation officers and judges also depend on maintaining the status quo? And touting this phrase "elected officials" as if this means anything--once ensconcced in office, how many judges or career government workers ever face any severe consequences for their actions?”
