San Francisco D.A. Kamala Harris Talks To Kimberly Marteau About Her New Book Smart On Crime

“What do you mean by "wrong people?" And how many of the "wrong people" has she prosecuted? What percentage of "wrong people has she prosecuted compared to the "right people?"
Saying that she gives sanctuary to violent offenders is a gross mischaracterization of what actually happened.
You have every right to vote for her or not vote for her for any reason you choose, but it sounds to me like you've taken some negative stories and possible mistakes she's made and turned them into a narrative that doesn't really fit the facts. Lumping her in with other city politicians who consort with lobbyists is a perfect example.
The DA's office isn't even involved in the kind of policymaking that would garner the attention of lobbyists. You're tarring her with the sins of other politicians, when she's actually been doing her job and mostly staying out of the internal politics of the city.”

“Maybe we don't, because the overall crime rate has been down by as much as 20% this year, with some violent crimes down by as much as 60%. When Harris took office, the conviction rate was 53%, now it is near 70%. Harris has created a program that has been shown to reduce the recidivism rate from 50% to 10%. It sounds to me like she has done an excellent job.The DA's office has done a complete 180 compared to what was going on under Hallinan.
Your impression of the situation doesn't match the numbers.”

“That's funny, she's my DA too, and I was just about to comment on how I'd wish she had decided to run for mayor instead of Attorney General of CA.
What specifically do you not like about her? She's turned the DA's office around, created a better relationship with the SFPD, the recidivism rate is lower, the conviction rate is higher, and nearly every category of crime has either dropped or remained flat. Considering what was going on in the DA's office under Terence Hallinan, I'd say she's been pretty successful, and if she can replicate that for the state, I will definitely be voting for her.”

Bush shut out MSNBC and the New York Times completely from interviews, all Obama has done is complain about the fact that FOX has ben gunning for him from the beginning, starting with falsely claiming that Obama went to a Madrassa 2 years ago.
I don't think the White House has any choice other than to push back, especially since some of what FOX is reporting is flat out false.”

“So what you're saying is that you and a lot of other progressives weren't paying attention during the 2 years Obama was running for president.
Obama never promised single-payer health care. The plans being debated are almost exactly what he campaigned on.
Obama has always said that he would contiunue the war in Afghanistan and leave some troops in Iraq.
Obama has taken the first step towards correcting the trade imbalance with China with the tariffs he imposed last week.
Next on the agenda after healthcare is cap and trade, which has already passed the House.
The rate of job loss has slowed dramatically since Obama took office, you can't seriously be expecting the economy to magically reverse itself after the steepest recession in 70 years.
I'm starting to think the right-wingers who were saying that Obama voters didn't really know what they were voting for were right.”

“The decision of whether or not a child should go to college should be made by that child and his or her family, and the cost of it should not be a hindrance. This program isn't just about sending kids to college, it's about sending them to vocational schools, technical schools, community colleges, or any other kind of post-secondary school that will allow them to get high-paying jobs that will ensure them a succesful future.
Gauranteeing kids the opportunity to go to college has nothing to do with the fiscal crisis California is in, and as Newsom pointed out, San Francisco has found a way to do it (along with universal health care) without running huge deficits.
Considering where the US ranks in education compared China and India, it's ridiculous to be against a program that will create thousands of highly educated workers that can keep this country competitive in the future.”

“I don't see what your problem is with mandates, that was central to Hillary's plan (and every other democrat besides Obama during the campaign). it makes sense that everyone be required to get coverage. If that benefits the insurance companies, so be it. it was never Obama's intention to put them put of business. Whether the public option passes or not, the vast majority of Americans will still be covered by private insurance. That was the plan all along.”

“This scenario has played out over and over again with Obama. All during the campaign, there were moments where everyone counted him out, and said he should be doing things differently, and every time, his way proved to be successful.
He will get a health care bill passed, though he won't get everything he wants. In the end, it will be a victory for him, and the base will have to decide whether they can support the compromise or not.”

“You can name call all you want, but it won't change the fact that we will get a health care bill passed. The minority is people like you who think allowing all Americans to access health care is marxism. The majority of people support reform, and the majority support a public option.
All you're doing is showing why nobody wants to vote for you far-right nuts anymore.
As for how we will do it, see my comment below. The same group of grassroots people who got Obama elected are working to get his agenda through. While you're worrying about the daily tracking polls and what the conventional wisdom is, we're getting things done. Just like during the election.”

Whether it's 46 million or 30 million, whether it's because they can't afford it, can afford it and choose not to get it, or are denied it because of pre-existing conditions, it doesn't change the fact that reform needs to happen.”
