The Democrats' Authoritarian Health "Reform" Bill and the Ascendency of Corporatism in the Democratic Party
Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 11:12:33 in Politics
“You are missing the point completely. Products of the federal government are not-for-profit, and owned by we the people. Products of private enterprise are for profit and owned by shareholders who want their piece of the pie to increase in value.
It's not really that complicated.”

Improving the Health Care Bill After It Passes Will Not Be Easy
Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 04:23:41 in Politics
“I agree with you in principle. But this bill has far more bad in it than good. The most important thing for Americans is that these companies compete fairly in the open market, or compete with a federally run program to drive down costs. The monopoly still remains. Anti-trust laws still don't apply. The lobbyists are still throwing cash at the pro-stitutes on capitol hill and Penna Ave. Consider that if you make 40K a year, you will be mandated by law to give $3200.00 to companies that are morally repugnant.
Their stocks soared because they are going to get millions in taxpayer dollars, making them even more powerful than they already are. After all, the industry spent something in the neighborhood of 265mil to get the bill they wanted. Baucus and other morally depraved lawmakers will work for these companies when they leave office.... .because the revolving door makes them virtually indistinguishable.
We should oppose this bill with all our might, and tell the Obama administration that we want campaign rhetoric CHANGE, not presidential milquetoast change.”

Are Progressives Just Whiners? Saving Lives Is What Matters
Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 09:06:34 in Politics
“I don't think you understand the bill. "Coverage" doesn't mean that they will be "covered". Does that make sense? There will not be stopped from practicing rescission (dropping anyone if they don't want to pay), the monopolies still exist (lack of competition pushes premiums higher), and no regulation of profits which only motivate greedy business men to MAKE MORE COIN. The system is broken and this only reinforces that broken system. Anybody who has read this bill for what it is (the insurance lobby for one) knows that it's a major sell out. There are good things in it, but we didn't vote for small change, we voted for CHANGE. Obama chose not to rally the people in public, but instead to placate the pharmaceutical industry behind close doors. Tisk, tisk....”

“Well, I certainly DID learn from my mistake of voting for Nader in 2000. If we Progressives are dumb enough to help usher back in a Republican Congress/President, then we are the fools, and we are the ones that will pay. It's not Obama's fault Lieberman, Nelson, and a few others voted to kill the parts we all wanted.... honestly, what do you expect him to do? Go home with nothing? B/c that's the alternative. Were you paying attention during the Clinton administration? Apparently you just don't learn, do you?
This bill appears to be FAR from perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. If we're hoping to get everything we want in, then we need to elect 60 Progressive senators.”

Please, Cut Obama Some Slack
Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 18:42:43 in Politics
“Jacob, you're missing the point. When somebody says they won't cut back room deals when they are in office, runs for president on a single-payer or public option campaign, gives billions to the bankers with no strings attached, and leaves those facing foreclosures, etc... out in the cold, how long should the base that voted him in keep silent?

If you want action, you have to demand it. All Obama has done since taking office is capitulate despite the fact he has majorities in the house and senate. Is our anger and criticism of a man who sold us down the river really deserving of any more "slack"?”

There must be something about "the party line" which suppresses true independent thought when the so strongly preach "total acceptance" of "God's word" (uh -- it isn't, by the way). Of course, this is the same fundamentalism that brought up the warrant-less wiretaps of the Bush era, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised. You're embarrassing yourself more and more with each comment. It is clear that you are woefully ignorant of the conflict and its history. But please continue using mainstream media talking points to defend the indefensible. This is a typical angle taken by those who know little to nothing about the subject. Are you really using the Arab conference in 1967? Are you ignoring all conferences from then until now? Who taught you how to debate an issue? If I were you I'd ask for my money back.”

“28 is not that old to be living the good life as a bachelor. I'd say the guy with the wife and kids is the one to be concerned about. He followed the "status quo" and followed what society told him to do, not what he wanted to do as an individula. Now he's stuck with a whole mountain of responsibilities and he can't go back and do it all over again. His friend on the other hand has the world by the tail....he can still get the girl, the job, the house, the kids and know that he sowed his wild oats and lived life while he was young enough to really embrace it.”

“Well, to be fair, the bill only protects the telecoms from civil suits. It does not protect them from prosecution. They can still be tried. But will Obama have the guts to go against his own party leadership and investigate the crimes of this "administration" and it's henchmen?
So far, the answer seems to be "NO!"

“Big Oil doesn't fear the law-makers. Big Oil only fears the people. Do they want another Robespierre? Do they want another reign of terror? It's an exercise to see how much the American populous will bend before they break and unleash vigilante justice. It's called blowback in some circles.”

Hugo Chavez's Very Excellent Windfall Oil Profit Tax
Commented Apr 17, 2008 at 13:52:43 in Business
“Raymond, speak for yourself pal. Hugo Chavez may not be a friend of yours, but he's more of a friend to me than any of the neoliberal political elites parrying for power here in the States. It's a knee-jerk reaction for the US media to brand Chavez as some kind of socialist military dictator ala Castro. He was elected with a far greater majority than Clinton or Bush could ever have dreamed of. Democracy is a two way street.... .as was made clear when the Palestinian people overwhelmingly voted to bring Hamas to power. Either you support democratic ideals, or you don't. Chavez should be the enemy of our exploitative foreign policy, and I hope he keeps on fighting for his nation's best interest.”
