Kerry: 'High Confidence' That Syria Government Responsible For Chemical Attack That Killed At Least 1,426 People

Kerry: 'High Confidence' That Syria Government Responsible For Chemical Attack That Killed At Least 1,426 People

“I find it hard to believe Assad would be so stupid to use chemical weapons with the world watching. I don't like his regime but he is being framed by his enemies some of whom are far worse then he.”

jgzeger on Aug 30, 2013 at 13:52:34

“I don't think that Assad has been stupid at all. He was counting on there being little appetite for any more military intervention in the Middle East, and he was right. What he didn't count on was a U.S. administration that was willing to act on conscience and not just political expediency.”

Sir Publius on Aug 30, 2013 at 13:50:58

“I DON'T want to go to war with Syria, don't like Obama, and am a conservative. But I have no reason to disbelieve Kerry that there is high confidence that Syria did this. Perhaps Assad thought if he did it on a small enough scale nothing would happen, since Obama DID make it clear in the past that we don't want to go in and because of Iraq. So, I guess Assad thought nothing was going to happen, maybe short of a few missiles. Perhaps we shouldn;t have conveyed so strongly in the past that we werent going to go in. Maybe that would have helped dissuade Assad.....”

“Back in Hollywood's golden era when the studio worked the actors to death most of them were heavy drinkers and like Judy Garland used pills and booze to control their waistlines. Hence most died young. Clark Gable was 60, Gary Cooper died at 61 and so on. I think the nature of the industry causes this problem as the movie Valley of the Dolls tried to show in 1967.”

“U.S. Backed Batista revolution? Batista deposed one of the most bloodthirsty dictators in Cuban History, General Machado. Batista as a young man was looked upon as a hero in particular to poor Cubans, He later became a corrupt dictator in the 1950s. In the 1930s he even had the support of the Communist Party of Cuba. Batista remains the only national leader who was not white and from the country's elite. Eleanor Roosevelt said in 1940 Batista would be remembered as a great reformer but as is often the case in the third world, young idealistic reformers grow into old, cynical, corrupt dictators.”

serdelp on Mar 10, 2012 at 16:03:44

“What I find even more interesting and speaks volumes of the Cuban culture, is that Batista, who was the dictator of Cuba, was a "Mulatto' and being such wasn't allowed to be a member in the most elite, private country club in Cuba. It's membership was strictly restricted to white wealthy Cubans and Americans.....ain't that something. You have to get a chuckle out of that.”

“There in lies the problem. Our society and economy cannot absorb all the people who want to come here. The Pew Hispanic Center says 50 million Mexicans alone want to move to the U.S. The U.S. should have adopted a Immigration system like Canada's or Australia's years ago. We will in the end because there is no choice anymore. I am glad though this community seems to be doing well.”

“Since 1993 there has been a wet/drry feet policy. If the Cubans can make landfall they can apply for asluym, the ones intercepted at sea are handed over to the Cuban coast guard. I have to agree that our policies have been very Cuban refugee friendly while Haitians are often deported. Many Cubans have been getting in though Mexico and Canada,”

“Being Hispanic , born in America to Cuban refugees. I will always be grateful for the way America opened its arms to my parents and allowed me to be born here. We cannot absorb all the people who want to come here. I also have sympathy with those Americans of all colors and creeds who are nervous that America is being hit by a tsunami of too many immigrants both legal and illegal arriving on our shores. 30 years ago an illegal immigrant could sneak into America and work a low paying job and still survive. Today the market is so flooded with unskilled labor that most even working two jobs cannot survive. In my lifetime I have seen Los Angeles go from being the #1 most coveted city in America to live in - in terms of quality of life to resemble a large metropolis in South America where there are a minority of very wealthy and prosperous white people and a majority of poor black and brown people. Most of the poor Indians who flee here are the nicest and humblest people I have ever met, most would rather be home but are driven out by lack of opportunity at home. Most legal immigrants are often college educated people from the third world. How are nations like Mexico ever going to realize their potential if their best and brightest flee the country to earn more money somewhere else?”

sjpersonal on Mar 22, 2010 at 11:59:49

“To be honest, I and many have serious problems with the way people from Cuba come into this country illegally and are allowed to stay as long as they touch ground, but Haitians are allowed to drown or are threatened it they try to do the same. So to me there really is no difference between a Cuban coming accross the water and an illegal crossing the boarder.”

“My father described it as a mini version of Brazil. There are countless facts and figures on pre Castrro Cuba. It was a far developed country by Latin Am Standrds. My grandfather was a doctor who spent his life working in his clinic he started and largely funded during the depression ,providing care to poor people. It was not paradise but by the late 50's the country seemed to be on it's way.”

“Whatever social gains Castro created were bought and paid for on the credit card of future generations. The once modern sugar industry is extinct. A engineer friend on Miami told me 75 % of Havana's buildings are no longer savable. The govt charges pennies to live in them and they are falling down from decades of no maintence. How will future generations rebuild with no economy? The damage Castro has done is beyond anyones immagination.”

The Russians in Havana... Again

Commented Feb 16, 2010 at 07:59:12 in World

“My family fled Cuba in 1960 when my affluent grandparents had their businesses and other assets were confiscated by the then new Castro regime. The Theater where The Bolshoi is playing is now called Karl Marx Theater, in pre- Castro times called LA BLANQUITA. My father is dead and as I write this my mother is near death from Cancer and never got over the trauma of leaving Cuba and now will never see it again. I am clueless what the current Russian government is trying to prove by restoring ties with the Castro regime. The USSR went bankrupt propping up disfunctional governments that would flatter it out of their children's inhertience. Billions were poured in from 1960-1991 and the end result was a once prosperous now broken and ruined country.”

Flying Sparkz on Feb 17, 2010 at 12:23:46

“Was your grandparent's property confiscated before or after they fled? Many affluent Cubans fled Cuba in anticipation of the US restoring a right wing regime. Property was then confiscated when the owners did not meet residency requirements. In the US property can be confiscated for non-payment of taxes.”

Oleg1 on Feb 17, 2010 at 00:44:59

“" my affluent grandparents had their businesses and other assets were confiscated by the then new Castro regime."
And.... Some people didn't bear the grudge of sharing their wealth with the people of Cuba and remained to build the New Cuba, free from the mafiosi and crushing poverty of other Caribian states.
Some moved to Miami.

Each person chooses their own path. I find the patriotic one more noble.”

TStringfellow on Feb 16, 2010 at 17:14:06

“You can say a lot about today's Cuba, to say it was "once prosperous" and is "now broken" is beyond idiotic. Your "affluent grandparents" no doubt saw Cuba as a paradise, however, the masses of peasants whose labor produced that privileged lifestyle likely saw it differently.

I won't digress into a Castro argument, but the majority of Cuba's people have benefitted from the Revolution. The fact that your grandparents were no longer allowed to live off the far of Cuba's land doesn't change that fact.”

“An excellent report. I think one issue needs to be brought up. Putting more money into a broken education system will not yield results. The Russians spent a fraction on what we spend on education and their high schools pump out fine scientests and other highly educaiton professionals. most Russian High Schools are far humbler than the worst school in South Central Los Angeles. California cannot maintain a European style social safety net with American style taxes. Cuts may be needed buy revenues need to increase. The illegal alien problem in California has been a double edged sword. The State benefits but the costs of caring and feeding the illegals when they need it is very costly.”
