“According to what I read, the Shiite had a long standing tradition of separation of mosque and state. Clerics did not used to get involved in the nitty gritty of politics and the exercise of power until Khomeini used the revolution to take power. Can someone corroborate this?”

“cobobs,
Yes, you are sort of correct. Traditionally, Iranian religious authorities (ayatollahs and grand ayatollahs) took the stand that although in Islam religious, social, economic, and political aspects of life are integrated and inseparable, the religous leaders must teach religion and be religious guides for the people and that they should not participate in state affairs. In a way, this could be compared to the western concept of "separation of church and state". However, ayatollah knomeini, in his book (years prior to the 1979 revolution) claimed that religious authorities had the responsibility to participate and in fact lead in the affairs of the government. This, according to Professor Nikki Keddie ( expert on Iran and shi'ism) proposes that this was a theoretical innovation that khomeini made, leading to his assumtion of political leadership position.”

“It was the case in Iran durring the time of the Monarchy (not just the Palavhis). For a few hundered years it was decided that in leau of the final Imam the Shia clergy and faithfull would follow the rule of a secular type of government until the return of the 12th Imam. The clergy knew that political leaders are always the subject of critism and distain among the populace, they didn't want the people to hate their religious leaders in the same way people hate politicians. Khomieni's concept of the Islamic Republic changed that, but it failed to stamp out the critism people lob at their political leaders. But it should be mentioned the clergy did speak up if they thought the government was overstepping it's authority. (Nasr 2006, Coughlin 2009)”

“Actually for shia the church and state are same thing. They have sort of like Papacy (Grand Ayatullah in their case) like setup where all aspect of life are govern by dictates (fatwas in their case). Khomeni just gave it a new life of the sort. If you trace their roots to initial days, their existence is because the guy they thought was successor after Mohammad was not made caliph but some one else was made.”

Laziness and lack of curiosity are the the only reasons for not being "politically correct". If you have something painful to say, find a politically correct way to say it.
