“I agree, single payer would have also completely avoided the legal challenges the ACA faced as well - but the senate would have never passed single-payer. It is sad that corporations with entrenched interest in the status quo have much more control of where this country is going than the people.”

“It's pretty easy to look up intro to mass communication courses to find a syllabus or two to realize that structural racism is clearly relevant to the course. Perhaps I was not there in that exact class, but I have experience with the subject and can use google.”

“You hit the nail on the head. This is not about the ACA as much as it is about Obama.Funny how badly Obamacare polls, but when people are polled about the ACA it polls much better. When people are polled by just being asked about the major changes the law makes, it has an overwhelming approval rating.”

“Playing victim has it's limits and simply being brown doesn't make you one today. We need to raise the bar on who's a victim by actually paying attention to individual lives or common factors like poverty, education , mental health. We can't keep reliving the 1970's forever. Time to move on.”

“For the record, every time one cries racism, it call attn to my outer shade.  I refuse to keep playing on the backs of my ancestors.  How I got here is mute today.  I am not playing this game anymore, but I will do my best to honor them by making and taking advantage of a better life.  In addition, to calling out all the individuals who use the word like it is their best friend.  I don't want the word to be so commonplace that when it really and truly happens the public takes a deep breath and keeps walking.”

“"As a teacher we mustn't make our students uncomfortable." what are you teaching? you have no clue what was being discussed. The class was mass communications, it is absolutely the place to discuss structural racism and it's impact on media and our culture. It doesn't matter if facts make students uncomfortable, the job of a professor is to impart facts. Coddling is for children in kindergarten, not college students taking a course on a serious topic.”

It was a communications class and twisting the syllabus to push your agenda is not ok. Imagine if some pot grower made communications all about the virtues of hemp. This stuff isn't cool because the kids are paying to learn skills and not to satisfy their professors desire to preach.”

“Were you in the class during the discussion? How do you know what was relevant and what wasn't? By the way, structual racism actually does play into mass communications discussions, which is what the class was about.”

Monte924 on Dec 3, 2013 at 19:11:47

“I focus a bit on the question "why do we need to discuss this in EVERY class". It tells me this was not a one time lecture but something that was going on very often in the class. While there is nothing wrong with having discussions about racism and educating students on the subject, I would question making it a primary focus in a class that is NOT specifically geared towards that subject. I mean the students signed up for a communications class, not a class about racism. There are probably plenty of reasons you could make racism relevant to the course and thus discuss it in class once in a while, but do it too much and the students could find it distracting. I mean you say so yourself that structural Racism plays into Communications; but what if EVERY class session was bringing up structural racism. Would you approve that as the course curriculum in a general class on communications?

I mean take for instance a class on european history, where the teacher spent 90% of the time talking about WWII. Yes it was an important event in European history, but I'd probably complain about the class focusing too much on the war and not enough on the rest of european history... Really all i'm saying is that context is important, and we got no idea how these classes were being handled by the teacher and as such there might be a valid reason to complain”

Joe MMMMMM on Dec 3, 2013 at 18:43:13

“Honey, as a teacher myself, I know I must be very careful to not impart my opinions on my students. For example, I am a animal rights activist and a vegetarian. I live in upstate NY. The people here are very much into hunting, so as to not make the children feel strange about my beliefs I don't bring my opinions up. Because its not about me, its about the STUDENTS! Bringing up a touchy subject in a class like this invariably makes some students uncomfortable and it causes tension. As a teacher we mustn't make our students uncomfortable. And you are wrong, this class is not a history class nor is it a class in sociology, etc where the topic is fair game. This teacher did her students a disservice by really grasping at straws to make ripe for her to lecture on. I looked at the course syllabus online just now, so don't tell me that racism is part of the particulars.”
