Americans Feel Strongly About How Poor People Should Spend Their Food Stamps

Americans Feel Strongly About How Poor People Should Spend Their Food Stamps

Commented Aug 16, 2013 at 15:16:58 in Politics

“That's an awfully broad brush you are painting with. The majority of SNAP recipients do not purchase such expensive food; they purchase cheap food to make it through the month. I know of one woman who receives food stamps and refuses to purchase junk food for her family - she tells them if they want it to get it themselves. She also does not buy beef anymore because of the price. The only seafood she purchases is frozen fish, again, because of the price. Not everyone is a "Food Stamp Queen".”

“A Civil Union does NOT grant legal rights and benefits equal to marriage. A heterosexual couple can get married in Podunk, USA, and their marriage is recognized the world over. I cross state lines, and the minimal rights that I do have disappear.  To me and my partner, marriage is not a "word"; it is a lifelong commitment to each other, in sickness and in health, rich or poor, for better or worse, till death we do part. It is not a "sex connection", it is a true commitment of one human being to another. This is not a hissy fit; this is our life, our retirements, our grandchildren. It is, quite simply, everything.”

“You assume too much. I have been in a Civil Union for a number of years, and it is alas, not enough, because as you say, it is entirely different than "marriage". I demand marriage. And so you are now on the way to "getting it". ”

El Aryeh on Jul 10, 2013 at 10:51:19

“If the "Civil Union" in your state grants all legal rights and privileges as real "marriage", then you are out of line to "demand" anything. If you want "marriage" solely because of the word, then unite with someone of the opposite sex, which is the true definition of "marriage".”

El Aryeh on Jul 10, 2013 at 10:18:38

“If you have all of the legal benefits of "marriage" in your state, then you have absolutely no call to "demand" anything; Obviously, you have a compelling need to throw a hissy-fit for whatever reason.”

“As a resident of PA, I have never been subject to the spectacle of anyone "mating" with anyone, as people tend to "mate" in the privacy of their own homes. Having been in a committed, same-sex relationship for 14 years, I have been observing local heterosexuals in my area and I have not seen my relationship have any effect on their marriages - positive or negative - in the entire time. My only "agenda" is being able to live my life privately with the same freedoms, tax burdens, and benefits as you. As an aside, the only man I know that wears lipstick and dresses is married to one of my girlfriends. Have a great day.”

El Aryeh on Jul 9, 2013 at 10:57:00

“Good - then you are completely on board with the fact that a "civil union" - with all due legal benefits - is acceptable, but is entirely different than "marriage".  You just made that point, and I think that you are now on the way to "getting it".”

“New respect for this "thinking" Pope. I'm no longer a practicing/believing Catholic, but maybe a Jesuit was exactly what the Papacy needed. A step forward, perhaps? Not a huge leap, but a baby step. "For God so loved the WORLD"....not just Christians, Jews, Fundys, Catholics, etc. - the whole world. No exceptions. Hmmmm. Maybe we all should.”

Does Grilling Cause Cancer? How To Make Grilling Healthier And Safer

Commented May 24, 2013 at 09:43:11 in Healthy Living

“Everything causes cancer these days. On the plus side, grilling gives us, in addition to yummy food, the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, some great time away from our gadgets, and a chance to socialize face to face. And of course, the chance to try out those lovely drink recipes we've been pinning on Pinterest all winter in anticipation for warm months. I don't eat beef, but the smell of grilling steak in the summer makes me swoon in pleasure. It's sort of like apple pie and flags and fireworks. It's the American way.”

I prefer NOT to tell people what "happens" when I am exposed to gluten, but if they push, I will look them in the eye and be honest. Careful what you ask for. One of my pet peeves: my mom dismisses my CD as "you don't eat bread". I quit explaining. Whole foods only.”

“When my elderly mother is hospitalized, I INSIST on an itemized bill even though she is covered by Medicare and a supplementary plan. I want to know if they are charging her $10.00 for a generic Tylenol or not. I don't care if the bill is 300 pages long and a PITA for the hospital to print out for me. What are they charging for the 25 cents worth of plastic tubing, or the 2" x 2" square of gauze they are putting on her elbow where they took blood? We need to INSIST that hospitals are held accountable for every single thing they do, and question them when costs are ridiculous. They say it is our lifestyles making us sick; I say it is us not going to doctors so that we can afford to live. A system run amok.”

“Extremely reasonable argument, Bear Swamp Man, allowing for both profits and benefits. One thing that also bothers me is that when the original patent runs out, Big Pharma changes one molecule, and then markets the "new" drug on a brand new patent. Too many patients end up doing without, or rationing their medications due to cost. Blacklisting India's cheaper generic alternatives is not the answer. Allowing bulk purchasing, maybe?”

macungieman on May 2, 2013 at 08:09:20

“Bear Swamp man?  Chuckle.  Chuckle.  Bulk purchasing?   Price Controls?  Whatever?  Big Pharma operates without restriction in the U.S. market.  Not the case in any of the other western countries.  They all sell the same drugs at a 30% discount from our marketplace, even for the new stuff.  It's insane.  Sadly most drugs hitting the market are rehashes of existing drugs.  More often than not they are not a great improvement over the old meds.  Industry needs new stuff to sustain itself.  It's a problem.  Meanwhile, there are no new anti-biotics in the development pipeline to take place of all the drug resistant regimes out there.  But we have now Latisse.  The world has been saved! Scary.”

“Ignorance. When people are poor, it costs MORE money to eat healthy food. When you were in college, did you eat a lot of pasta? Probably yes. Why? It was CHEAP. Processed food is also cheaper than fresh vegetables. So let me fix your sentence: It is clear that he eats too much processed food and simple carbohydrates.

It makes me sick that we as a country would treat our elderly in such a horrible way. I have moved in with my elderly mother so that she is able to afford to eat and that I can cook for her and make sure she does eat. Isn't this the very least I owe to the woman who gave me life? Isn't this what we ALL owe? Isn't this how we ourselves want to be treated when we too become elderly? We reap what we sow.”

“Yeah.  Well.  See, if I were an amazingly complex government conspirer, and I was setting up a scenario that was going to be surrounded by a boatload (see what I did there?) of media, I would do one of two things:

1) mention blood, then provide blood.

2) don't provide blood, then don't mention blood.

There's really no point in mentioning the blood unless you're going to have, you know, blood.

What I could do instead is have my amazingly complex conspiring actor say:

"I saw the boat was open, and gol darn, there he was!"

See how easy that is?”
