“gale4786, did you bother to read the story? This is not a family that has a problem with co-pays. Their insurance has denied them further care for anything related to Stickler's Disease. Period. Due to a nasty, greedy trick called risk management, the insurance company pays NOTHING toward the treatment of Stickler's. The mother is giving up further treatment to free up money so her two girls can retain their sight.
I'm all for single payer/public option, too, BUT I have no "buts". I am extremely happy with my health insurance and perhaps yours is just as fantastic, BUT if you and your children were denied care for a genetic disease and your insurance wouldn't pay, I'd donate to you, too. Short of being very wealthy, a family coudn't afford the treatment to prevent three of its four members from going blind. In the long run, the added burden on society of providing for the needs of three sightless people will be much greater than simply providing a public option that will actually benefit people in this untenable situation.
We need a revolution and the first casualty should be private health insurance companies. Greedy insurance companies who do nothing but take huge profits and provide little in return must go.”

As a matter of fact, she helped subsidize the purchase more food for those who can't afford to buy enough groceries. If you donate, that's even better.”

Commented Sep 15, 2009 at 08:30:10 in Politics

“Pre-existing is pre-existing and that's that. Once it's been reported to medical authorities that a spouse is a domestic abuse victim, that spouse will NEVER be insured. There is no "leave the ktchen, put some shoes on, file for divorce and get a restraining order and we'll see what we can do for you then," as Cryostatic puts it. What the abused spouse gets is a denial of coverage, forever. Of course, the abuser is insurable.”

Elton John Deemed Too Old, Too Gay To Adopt HIV Positive Ukrainian Boy

Commented Sep 14, 2009 at 12:21:27 in Entertainment

“Let's look at this logically. Would little Lev be better off in a Ukranian orphanage or with Elton John and David Furnish? Where would he get better treatment for HIV? Where would he get more love and attention?
Lev's chances of being adopted by a young, heterosexual married couple are slim to none. His chances of getting the best possible medical treatment while he's in this primitive orphanage are even worse.
If Lev remains in the orphanage, he will likely have a short, miserable life.
For Lev's sake, let's call on the Ukrainian government to let this child be adopted by Elton John and David Furnish.”

newtom replied on Sep 14, 2009 at 12:30:16

“Unfortunately logic isn't being employed. Tragically, there are people who would prefer to see a child left in an orphanage than being loved and cared for by a family. Like the 1 represented above who doesn't understand that the pope is not the ruler of the world.”

“Then why would the polls state that 77% of the American public has a desire for nationalized health care? EVERYONE has a right to health care, not just those of us who can afford it or have it as part of our job benefits. There are 47 million people without access and millions more underinsured. We MUST do something about it.

The soulless bodies and minds of health insurance execs consist of a bottomless pit where no one ever has enough money. Their companies are the "death panels" that line the execs pockets by denying treatment, making them richer than Midas.

It's unbridled greed run amok. Must families declare bankruptcy and have their homes foreclosed to get the care they need in times of extreme illness or injury?

How many more Americans must die needlessly?

Texas never sent us anything but trouble and wants to secede. (YAY!) Texas Gov. Perry, seceder-in-chief, won't take TARP funds, so he certainly won't want help for the drought. Perry can take off his tin-foil hat and some time out from stirring up the tea baggers and birthers to deal with the drought. The free market is the ticket for Texas.”

“Thank you for seeing the light and switching parties. Now we must make sure that more and more African Americans are registered to vote.

Although the Democrats are far from perfect, the Republican party would look at this situation without caring about either the mother or child. The US needs to give more help to those who must work so much just to survive. It isn't fair to the families.

Incidentally, this child should qualify for SSI. He's obviously disabled. It isn't much, but it would help the mother raise him without constantly working.”

“I agree. How on earth is sending the mother to jail supposed to help the child? The woman worked a great deal and has obviously supported the boy, but with a limited income she had to be gone from the home for many hours of the day. She did take him for help in North Carolina, but they tuned them away.
Hopefully, a bariatric MD will see this and volunteer to help him. He's way beyond the scope of any parent.”

This mother is unfit to care for her child and should be in jail. It's the same as those crazy parents who pray their child will get better in stead of taking them to the doctor. If this kid had a heart attack (God forbid) and d/es she should be in trouble.”
