A Rebuttal to Howard Dean: I Am a U.S. Senator, and I Will Vote For This Bill

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 07:11:25 in Politics

“Keep in mind, Senator, that you are not only gambling on your re-election, which is to be expected as it is typical of our current culture, we gamble on everything - but you are gambling with the lives of the uninsured and the insured. Your health plan is more than secure. Sleep well.”

Have We Forgotten How To March?

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 00:11:49 in Business

“I extrapolate from the battered spouse analogy that we are apparently in denial about an important factor in making people think twice before they gather and protest.

Pittsburgh and Copenhagen are just the latest prominent examples, and people are still more likely to criticize a preemptively detained (sound familiar?) demonstrator than the one who either cracked their skull to "subdue" them, or pepper-sprayed them while they're sitting in a wire cage; not to mention the "humane" variety of blasting them with hearing damaging sound in order to get them to disperse.

People are afraid, but don't even know it. Somewhere deep down, though, there is an awareness that gathering to demonstrate peacefully is, for all intents and purposes, approaching illegality.”

outnow replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 11:23:09

“The Stockholm Syndrome is also worth mentioning, i.e., people come to adore their abusers. While in captivity, humans have an innate ability to survive by denying the horrors of their situations. Otherwise, they would dispair and lose the will to go on.

Social psychology has been perfected for social control through media and fear to be different from the herd. Man is a group-thing animal in many ways. Anyone who is familiar with social psychology understands the counterinsurgency methods used domestically in a psychological sense to control the population. If you had trillions of dollars won't you do the same thing to keep your money and control people?”

“If dogmatically influenced, nationalistically relativist, and continually rising murder counts aren't enough to make people aware of just how evil we are, then I don't see what this missing sign is gonna do; except dare people for a short time to realize just how backwards our priorities are.”

It Takes Guts to Support Health Reform

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 11:47:15 in Politics

“This reform? Gumption maybe. Gall for sure. What'd take guts - and moral character - would have been to support, say, Bernie Sanders proposal just the other day. But I suppose you would call reps like Sanders and Kucinich the "negative and famous" variety. Of all the gall.”

Linda Bergthold replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 18:49:44

“No I love Bernie Sanders and think he and Dennis speak frankly and honestly. They have not been hogging the air waves. But I do believe that now, with the left peeling away from health reform and the right saying no to everything, that it WILL take guts to take this to the end.”

“Wow, how'd you slip through? Aw, it doesn't matter, you're on the money with this one.

And the thing is, even the climate change deniers should be made aware of the human health issue at stake here. I have always felt that the environment is a public health issue first and foremost.

Biking as the preferred mode of transportation would dramatically improve health care (including cost) in the US. It just takes leadership with the will to invest in the infrastructure.

“One would think a lot of things. I suppose there are people who attribute his lack of executive experience with just who it is he chose to surround himself, while another might say that his choice of cabinet is precisely the mark of a shrewd politician. At any rate, having it both ways is what the president is doing. That he isn't praised by all doesn't preclude that fact.”

plwood01 replied on Dec 14, 2009 at 18:29:08

“Most people praise God, not their politicians and even if he were not the President, we would not be able to praise who ever was in office if they handled things very differently because this nation would have collapsed, or so we were continually told by all the good ole White boys who were there before the crisis hit and some of whom stood there just blinking at the time when things were crashing all around them. People like John McCain who I would say was part of the problems that Obama has had to deal with on his first year watch. It is interesting to read all the comments about what he hasn't done or has done for that matter, but what is seldom mentioned is the fact that those same good old boys standing around didn't have any better solutions to the problems either!”

“Am I alone in thinking that there is nothing exceptional about this guy's speeches except for the reaction to them?

There was nothing special about the speech,, save for perhaps the fact that he spent so much time accepting a peace prize, while justifying, what is without a doubt now, his war.

He said what so many leaders before him have: Evil exists, war is necessary, we are special in that we care so much and try not to kill civilians, we are a beacon of the light of liberation and freedom to the world, blah, blah, blah..

The most frustrating thing about party faithful is that they abandon their logic when it no longer applies to criticising their oponent. In this case, the meme that the Dem faithful repeated B.O. (before Obama) seems to have flown out the window: We are creating more terrorists with this "war".”

ContraryThinker replied on Dec 12, 2009 at 17:42:54

“You are correct that there was nothing unique about the speech

The same speech could have been heard at any CFR,Brookings, AEI, meeting or other similar think tanks

The reaction to it this time is because of how totally inappropriate the speech was for the venue that it was delivered”

“There was nothing special about the speech, not even the reaction from his loyals, save for perhaps the fact that he spent so much time accepting a peace prize, while justifying what is without a doubt now, his war.

He said what so many leaders before him have: Evil exists, war is necessary, we are special in that we care so much and try not to kill civilians, we are a beacon of the light of liberation and freedom to the world, blah, blah, blah..

If you took the opportunity to reflect a little yourself, you might find that this is nothing new. Furthermore, the meme that the Dem faithful repeated B.O. (before Obama) seems to have flown out the window: We are creating more terrorists with this "war".

So, basically, you are angry that the speech didn't work even better? Well, assuming you yourself are not in the mood to further "reflect", perhaps the only question to ask is: You got your war, what more do you want?”

New Tiger Woods Ad Campaign (Part 2)

Commented Dec 10, 2009 at 13:04:10 in Comedy

“It's not true. Granted I live in Europe out of choice as well, but to say that the media doesn't jump all over sex scandals is either disingenuous or ignorant.

I can think of instances which involved a former president, a has-been pop star, and a soccer player; that's just within the last year. I also recall two cases that have cost party members their positions, if you'll pardon the pun.

I can't imagine the reaction to someone as prominent as Tiger Woods. Oh yeah, I actually can: The press in Europe has discussed it from several different "perspectives" as well.”
