Christopher Bizilj's Family Files Suit: Family Blames Teen For 8-Year-Old's Uzi Death At Gun Show

Christopher Bizilj's Family Files Suit: Family Blames Teen For 8-Year-Old's Uzi Death At Gun Show

Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 06:29:20 in Home

“Commercial considerations aside, I think that this "show" has served its purpose: Teaching the responsible way to handle a gun. The primary beneficiary of that lesson is no more, but the parents should have learned something; in this light, I can't imagine that they'd win.

But, if it is successfully argued that the party involved was negligent in making the "show" a safe one, then the parents 'll have plenty of money for their next kid, should they choose to give it another try. In that light, I hope they at least learned their lesson.”

“I guess after their *8-freakin'-year-old* son drove them to the show safe and sound, drained a fifth of Jack Daniels, and lit a cigarette, his parents decided to give him a machine gun...

What could go wrong?”

“I hardly see these as examples of the authority of oppression - as you seem to understand it - but an answer to authority. It is, after all, authoritative dictates which tell us that homosexuals cannot marry, or that corporations have the same rights as the individual, granting them the authority to act against our best interest.

The cases which seem to indicate otherwise are just further examples of one mafia getting the upper hand on another. Still, I think your comment is one-sided.”

Philclock replied on Nov 08, 2009 at 00:30:30

“You got my point, someone truly questioning authority does not, IMHO, simply substitute another authority, but develops other avenues for free expression.

Such as civil unions which, if effective, allow the same privileges from the State as "marriage".

Your corporations example doesn't hold up; allowing people to gather and act in concert as an individual in order to transact business grants more flexibility, and less complexity, in conducting business transactions.

That's how this country came about, didn't it, questioning authority, not finding a new authority.

And that's why I'm surprised at so-called "progressives" going not for freedom, but a New Authority, which as the "Who" might say is same as the Old Authority.”

Want Obama To Be Bolder? Take To The Streets!

Commented Nov 07, 2009 at 10:04:53 in Politics

“So the people who elected the president should have to "take to the streets" before he'll do anything? Doesn't the actual election count for something?

Shouldn't the fact that he actually occupies the Office of President mean he shouldn't just "slink back to the Oval Office" when things don't go his way? (as if he's even taken any bold steps to begin with, your supposition is a hypothetical!)

And when you consider that the state apparatus tear-gases and sound blasts protesters and drags them off to jail whenever they are of the "left" variety, meanwhile giving righties carte blanche to carry their guns to their protests - how the heck are those who elevated him to office supposed to be emboldened to stay active?

When you state: "But on some key issues such as jobs, the bank bailout, the war in Afghanistan and a whole slew of executive-power related issues, Obama has fallen way short of expectations."

You effectively, if unintentionally, make the case that "not being G.W.B." is far outweighed by not being any different on the issues that matter the most.

Then, last but not least, there is no small membership to his constituency who are content to shout down his critics on blogs with comments like: give him more time, he's a master chess player, he's smarter than you/us, he's got 'em just where he wants 'em, etc...”

“Valid perspective. But the whole gist here is from the spectator's perspective and as far as that goes, how much one enjoys watching a sport, or in the case of baseball, a game, is the only point. Have you ever heard of spectator sports? And speaking of stat nerds, try reading George Will's book on baseball.

All that said: Writing about watching sports is like reminiscing about dancing about architecture.”

“You're are right in your implication (if I infer correctly) that only outside of Berlin would one take "ein Berliner" for a pastry. However (if I may play along), had he delivered the speech in Frankfurt, he would have said, "Ich bin ein Frankfurter." Then still, only the Americans would have found it humorous and the Germans would, still, wonder what all the fuss is about.”
