Families, Caregivers Bear the Biggest Burden

Families, Caregivers Bear the Biggest Burden

Commented Nov 15, 2009 at 19:57:57 in Politics

“Bob: You are so right about it all as the families not only bear the brunt of it when the loved one is deployed and have to go about life hoping nothing happens to their loved one and they don't home home the way they left. NAMI says 1 in 3 soldier suffers a mental illness problem when they have been deployed to the war zone and the reintergration into family and work life is too hard for many to deal with and it shows up somewhere. When the soldier suffers a large loss of function or limbs then who will take care of them? If they are not married and single who takes up the burden? These soldiers are put through the VA system but who guides them and holds their hands to make sure they get the benefits they deserve? Often times the older parents are not equiped to handle the injured as the economy has them on the edge if not in the hole. The "Volunteer Military" is made up of not the most well off families but many of the poorest so what needs to be done to fix this?”

Bush Oil Buddies Divvy Up Iraqi Oil, Now Joined By "Liberal Scion" Peter Galbraith

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 17:30:51 in Politics

“The amount of American blood lost and lives lost totally of all countries involved in the Iraq war Bush/Cheney built on their lies shames them if they had any but they do not. The war was always about their desire to be "someone in the history books" and money/oil for the friends of Bush/Cheney. One only has had to see that apparent through Haliburtin and the many names they use to provide still in the middle east the security and whatever they can. The facts have always been out where people could see if they wanted to but the GOP is also part of this. One thing we do not have to cry conspiracy over as out in view this was when Bush was in office and even more since. That we have lost so many soldiers in body and spirit because these folks did these things is hard to bear in my mind and heart. Suicides and loss of body parts and the lives these soldiers have left bothers me every time I hear about another one gone. Bush/Cheney should be tried for these things...but never will.”

“It still is amazing this woman matters as she could not be honest and truthful throughout her time in the spotlight and was not even capable to finishing the job as Gov in Alaska when she was voted in to that position...why does she matter? Too many still believe her when she says anything as they never bothered to "vet" her and actually hear what she said other than to whip up hatred for Obama and the dems. She has the value system of one we would not tolerate in office in the lower states and because she came from Alaska which is not the strongest state represented in our history books here she got away with too much and McCain is to blame for picking this one.”

Why We Need Better Rockets

Why We Need Better Rockets

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 21:55:37 in Technology

“Space has been done often times like the military..the lowest bidder! Yes we need to have a more economical way of not only putting rockets into space but also people. Private companies as well as other countries have done these rockets more economically than Nasa but we will not find Nasa doing the different way of doing things until they are made to not do the lowest bidder but the smartest way to be able to do all rockets the same way while acheiving quality we can trust will not put anyone at risk. I go back to the "accidents" where our astronaunts died on the launch pad or shortly after the shuttle took off when human failures also played a part. The people who know the best ways as Buzz has pointed out should have a say not just where they can give an opinion but actually influence the building of what works not the future designs!”

Downix replied on Nov 09, 2009 at 23:45:57

“I hear this, but the truth is, a shuttle is actually very economical to run. A directly derived vehicle not requiring the shuttles "dead weight" of wings and such could easily be made to lift over 100mT to orbit for a lower cost-per-kg than the best rockets anywhere right now.

Think on it for a bit, the fixed cost for a shuttle is $2.8 billion, weither you launch or not. The fixed cost for the commercial EELV's is $1.5 bilion, launch or not. Add to it the per-vehicle cost, Shuttles is $150 million, EELV's is $130 million. Now, a directly derived will boost the shuttle cost to roughly $180 million per. But now, you are lifting 100mT vs the EELV's 20mT. Even with the heavier infastructure cost, you launch 4 Shuttle Derived vehicles, you come out lower cost per kg to orbit.”

The Ft. Hood Massacre: A Lone-Wolf Jihad of One?

Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 13:43:48 in Politics

“Unlike some who believe "all Muslims want to kill us in our country" I believe this was a guy who was very, very mentally ill who needs a lot of help. He was not looked at enough by the military who trained him for his job to be a psychiatrist who would work with soldiers with PTSD. They let pass many things about him which should be red flags. They have such a high need for persons able to work with those with PTSD that they hire people from the civilian sector to help so this guy was a person who could fit the bill and they had him as they trained him for a set time. He wanted out to satisfy his twisted beliefs and that would have put him in the private sector dealing with civilians as he had the training and the licence. He would have exploded more than likely there had he not done it at FT Hood as he isn't a well man. That he lived is surely also something he had not planned on doing so he will face what he did and I am glad he will have to provide the answers. I doubt it is any type of "Muslim thing" at all but a very mentally ill man with guns. We should not go after all Muslims for what he did especially in the military as most serve with honor.”

A New Wrinkle in the JFK Assassination Story

Commented Oct 31, 2009 at 06:07:46 in Books

“Lyndon Johnson was a man of many moods and I have not one doubt he would have been in such a state after the killing of JFK as the ways of washington and the CIA/FBI and J Edgar Hoover would have made anyone paranoid and Johnson was a bit unhinged as books have shown since his death. That this is called a new wrinkle is a bit off the mark as it wasn't such a huge deal in reality if anyone had been reading all these years about the various subjects and people who made up the "cover ups" that no doubt we will never know the real whole truth/story. I will never believe Oswald was capable of doing the assassination alone if he was not the patsy.”

“The military over the years has been willing to let go of the people who have been highly trained in so many areas and was even willing to sacrifice our active duty soldiers with kicking out translators when we could ill afford to in Iraq as just more current examples. This has gone on for so long since DADT and before when there was no official "label" on the kicking out those who might be called many names by the right. There has been through the years many sexual attacks on female soldeirs as well as the locals near the bases all over the world and yet the whipped up fears of the right and ignorance of many soldiers about those who are not heterosexuals have kept this a bias that has cost too many their desired active duty status and too many not honorable discharges. When I speak to active duty soldiers now they have without exception said they cared little about the orientation of the soldiers sex life but they wanted somone on their "six" that would be their and do what needed to be done. This is one thing we need to let go of and get rid of yesterday and not sooner than now if we can. TOO many soldiers are done in and tired of doing all when we have people willing and able who want to serve without the questions about sex....”

“I look a the difference of the salute ofr sure but I mainly believe the real difference between a President who will get up really early in his day and do without fanfare of a photo op what every President should do and to recognize the true and real sacrifice of any war under their watch. It shows to me the real difference between a President and the Commander in Chief of the military itself. President Obama takes his job and responsibities seriously and weighes his thoughts and decisions on the costs especially of war. Where Bush thought of his legacy in history and his desire to be a "War President" over any other price of war and the human piece of it, Obama looks and I believe understands the human cost from the active duties who do their jobs daily to the Vets and the most costliest of all those who die in the line of duty in war. President Obama accepted the responsibilities of the previous President who never really did accept his.”

Since Obama begain his run we have heard so many people, especially those he ran againest throwing out to those who just might do the actions, that it was OK to attack Obama in any way! This country which has suffered from the assasinations of great men and JFK and his brother RFK top the list with Martin Luther King and Abe Lincoln among the others we do not need another person to fall from another person's gun. To think any judge would determine they could deny the rights of any citizens based on color saddens me as racism is still hidden under the covers of "personal rights to say and believe freely". It is hidden in the minds of those who speak in a "code of hatred" or outright hatred of anyone different than they are. But mainly it has been ingrained in our countries history and those who cam before us and we must decide, all of us, to change that.”

Historic Day: Obama Signs Advance VA Funding into Law

Commented Oct 23, 2009 at 14:01:19 in Politics

“Paul, you are one special guy who deserves much for all you do for those who have fought and continue to fight to protect us. They deserve much better care and attention than they have been given and although it has improved since the past wars it still stinks if you need the care the VA is charged with giving. The situations all over the country are grim if Vets don't live right on the top of an area which has a larger VA facility. Many who are in need for mental services drive more than 5 and some 10 hours to get the mental health service provider to see them with an appointment every three months. The prescriptions are for 3 months for these vets. The needs of those who desire to see a provider are random depending on how many providers there are and if they have any time available. This often means a hospitalization at some far away from home facility to get into the system. I work with active duty and they have an easier time of it. But still the inpatient facilities are not often on the base where they are assigned. We have mental health patients sent to us from all over the southern Ca and medivac'd from all the world.”

A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Talk About Afghanistan

For sure the CPS was coming in like SWAT to look deeply into the eyes of the parents to determine what they are like. I was sickened by it. How much do we appear to be stupid in the US? Is this much more important than the 2 wars we are still losing soldiers in? I was dismayed to hear actual people saying how glad they were the kid was ok and they had watched over SIX HOURS of tv to be sure of it! All the while these same people sure had not one single clue that we had lost more troops in afghanistan. The "media" hadn't told them that.....”

“I helped to admit a female active duty to our ward/unit last night and she shared something I had heard before from another female and a couple of males who had been in Iraq the first years of the war there, rape happens a lot to our female soldiers. This most recent is having to go through legal channels to even have her case be "really heard". The first person who was given her "complaint" she says swept it so far under the rug they had to extract it with a couple of people (males) who would support her "story". Otherwise she would have no one even paying attention now. Her case is still in the process of getting investigated for "real this time". She and others have said the military is not doing what they should and can to deal with these sexual harrassment and attacks as they have been told the military doesn't want any "numbers in the media" to reflect the whole story. If it was just one female and not more than one person I would think it not a larger issue but as it continues to come up as reasons for people being in a psych unit for thoughts of killing themselves or others it has grown as far as I can see!”

“As many know I work in a mental health ward/unit in a Navy Medical Center. I work in the psych ICU where it is locked and as safe as we can make it for those who need to be protected from themselves. The incidence of PTSD troops being admitted has gone done while the suicides continue to climb and it comes from the "be a man" mentality of the military I am frequently told by those who have had to come in for help to stay alive. That obviously isn't being told to the women as the talk they get is more the "Be a good Marine" etc and "stand up", "Be tough" the worst is "If you made it home then what's your problem". For every 10 males who has been forced to or asked to come into our ward/unit there has been 1 female and it is not a PTSD diagnosis they usually get, they are "depressed" or "Anxiety problems". I am not sure what should be done for these are active duty soldiers we see and I have not one single doubt that there are thousands who need the help but are not getting it until situations force it. Too many females are suffering as I am told by those soldiers male and female with PTSD but is it sexist issues or across the board issues?”

Congress: We Need You to Lead

“I shudder to think what Congress will actually do as no matter which party they all have someone, some PAC or lobbyists they "owe" to and will place above the common person as they are showing us and have been showing us for months now. We as people, human beings have basic health needs which most cannot afford and the insurance companies have had thei own "death panels" and clerks making life saving or death giving decisions for as long as they have been around. The insurance companies are putting so much money into the fight againest reform and to promote the liars and Congress people to not pass the bills we need for us to live the best and health lives. Tis is not just about us adults, it is more about the kids as they will continue to not get the health care they need to become health adults and if they do get seriously ill they might not live to adulthood. There were clerks making decisions about my daughter before she died and my father before he died.”

I lost my insurance when I lost my job last year and the only job available has no offered health insurance and I doubt I could afford it if they did. I have stage three kidney disease going for fourth stage without insurance and too young for the gov medicare and too much income for welfare. That insurances have had "death panels" and clerks making decisions about the health and well being of everyone who has insurance should make everyone angry as hell but they plod along knowing the cost is going up if you have insurance and the rate of payment is going down faster and want so very badly to keep this as they are?”

“Be sure to get on a transplant list as soon as possible. Keep working at it and insist until you are on one. Dialysis is more profitable to some docs than transplants, so they will want to keep you on dialysis to offset the cost of providing care to sicker people. The death rate for dialysis patients is 25% per year although some are endstage illness. You might live eight years on dialysis or twenty eight years with a kidney.
Cadaver kidneys are almost as good as live donor kidneys. Do the rest of you folks hear me?...plan to donate after death. Many people die from lack of a kidney, and they die ten, twenty, thirty years sooner than they would if they had a transplanted kidney.”

“Liberal Myth
We are facing a 20-foot sea level rise because of global warming.

The Facts
This is highly unlikely and not part of any scientific consensus.

The recently released summary of the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report estimates a sea level rise of only 7 to 23 inches over the next century, and there are reasons to believe that even that may be overstating things.

Radical Islamic terrorists: driven by an evil ideology of hatred and loathing.

Their beliefs are based on misinterpretations of Islam.
Their ultimate goal is the destruction of liberal democracy across the world, whether it be in the West or the Middle East, and the establishment of a Muslim Caliphate.
Captured documents from al Qaeda indicate that the terrorist group is fighting in Iraq to establish the country as a base for exporting terrorism—not because the United States is there.
Exploiting frustration
A British government study shows al-Qaeda recruits from disillusioned and angry youth.
American foreign policy is an excuse for radical Islamic terrorism, not a cause.
Not foreign policy
Osama bin Laden has preached his hatred of the United States for more than a decade, regardless of American foreign policy.
Bin Laden attacked the United States for its weakness after it withdrew from Somalia in 1993—and again for its aggressiveness after September 11.
Declarations of war
Terrorist leaders have repeatedly declared war on the United States and its allies because of who they are.

In 1998, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri called on their followers “to kill all Americans and their allies--civilian and military” as “an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it.”
In 2002, radical Islamic leader Abu Bakar Bashir said the families of those slaughtered in the Bali terror bombing should “convert to Islam as soon as possible””

I can tell you that beyond the fact that there are not a lot of people/doctors doing any talking with patients now days, there are frequently the patients coming in for the "quick fix" which is a pill. Often it is the latest wonder drug seen on TV ads. If that is not a questionable issue there are the pharma reps who often times the doctor remembers the last one to see them or the reps the doctor likes the most who gives the samples and starts the person on that med. As Americans we want the quickest fix and the most likely to do the job without any more effort than the pill a day to keep depression at bay or away period. The American way as we can it! Sometimes though the person has a situation that just needs to be talked through and it will be done and depression improves to not a problem. That takes more than doctors are paid for and often means the person has no friend to work with on just talking through it.”

They aren;t fighting for "free markets , because those banks would have been allowed to fail if that were so.
They weren't fighting for justice because very few of the Corporate CEOs who robbed us are even being accused.
They aren;t fighting for the people because the president and Congress have given their consent to evicted us , leave us jobless and go without healthcare so theat corporations can make more profits. They aren't fighting for our land because national parks are being opened up to drilling and logging.

There have been many holes in the VA care for years and that the gov can be strapped for cash and rewrite amounts they put iny comes from for the care of these great people is sad enough. There should be a promise made when someone signs on to be of service to our country that they will be provided for and given the option of affordable healthcare for their lifetime. Not just if you qualify for the VA but for them and family to receive what they deserve. A few years service is what some consider long enough for just coverage during that time for the person and their family to receive for just that period enough time and the person who served getting VA after that. I believe there should be more done for the vet and family after which doesn't allow for them to fall off the map.
