O'Reilly, Beck, Olbermann and Maddow: Venomous Snakes?

Commented Aug 14, 2009 at 17:26:53 in Media

“The only reason it is a gross injustice to call Rachel Maddow a venomous snake is simply that she is not venomous. She's unapologetically liberal, but I've yet to treat any of her guests with disrespect. She exposes but never ruthlessly attacks. She's not given to ad hominum attack on those she disagrees with.
Limbaugh Beck, Garafolo and Olbermann, et al are gasbags. Rachel Maddow doesn't stoop to that kind of contention-driven infotainment.”

Palin Attended Church Event With Samurai Sword Ceremony

Commented Jul 17, 2009 at 21:18:00 in Politics

“Come on Mr. Wilson and HuffPo!
This is the kind of Rovian distraction that only cheapens the discussion. Samurai Swords....big deal. It's none of our business how Mrs. Palin and her family choose to look at Christianity or any other religion they want to practice. Focus on the misuse of funds and per diems....I for one don't want the question of her hypocrisy to become another platform for her to complain she's being treated unfairly. In the case of her church practices it would be true.”

HBGirl replied on Aug 07, 2009 at 19:44:57

“I can explain. The 1994 Chandler settlement agreement was for global claims of negligence and the lawsuit was defended by Michael's insurance carrier. The insurance carrier negotiated and paid the settlement, over the protests of Michael and his personal legal counsel. Michael was said to have almost collapsed as the settlement was forced upon him. This is the way it works when a claim is brought against you and you're insured for those claims. The plaintiffs knew he was insured so they went after him.”

She has only continued in her national political career in helping to lead the GOP over the cliff. Republicans need to retake their party from slash and burn politicians like Palin. Why the California Court's Decision Is Good for Gay Marriage

Commented May 26, 2009 at 21:49:58 in Politics

“The Supreme Court of California have handed the proponents of same-sex marriage something even more powerful and more immeadiate than Zelinsky outlines here. The Court has upheld Proposition 8's banning same sex marriage while allowing 18,000 same-sex marriages to stand. This is a position that is Constitutionally untenable. This will undoubtedly send a case to the Supreme Court of the US.

Citizens are not Constitutionally enabled to dole out and withdraw rights of citizens. I look forward to this issue being decided by the Supremes.”

Trusty72 replied on May 26, 2009 at 23:33:39

“No, citizens may not "dole out and withdraw rights," but marriage is not a "right," as it is a creation of the state. If the people, through the legislature, eliminated ALL state recognition of marriage from California law, they would be entitled to do so, wouldn't you agree? One could still call himself "married," or have a wedding ceremony, the state just wouldn't register them or recognize them in any way.

And of course citizens may set rational conditions on state-created privileges. We have conditions on driver's licenses, which are also privileges, not rights. We even have some conditions on voting privileges. We have other conditions on marriage too -- age conditions, relationship conditions (no sibling marriages), anti-polygamy conditions (no marriage if you're already married), and so forth.

It is true, though, that one condition, the prohibition on interracial marriages, has been struck down by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia -- yet that case is not all that applicable here. One could make a colorable argument that the opposite sex requirement is a highly rational consideration that would survive due process and equal protection scrutiny. Yet no matter what a court concludes, it's a certainty that the losing side will complain that the decision turned on biases rather than the law. That is why I think it's better it's left to the people to decide, for better or worse.”

Richcelt replied on May 26, 2009 at 22:29:05

“The only danger is that there is a 5-4 conservative majority still. Any such lawsuit will have to have the good luck of getting to the SCOTUS between the time a conservative justice leaves and Obama is still in office to replace him with a liberal justice, flipping the 5-4 split to the liberal end of the scale. Otherwise, I fear that the conservative justices will rule in favor of Prop 8 out of their conservative, and religious, biases, NOT based on the constitutional violation such laws create.”

Commented May 26, 2009 at 21:42:12 in Politics

“"CJ Burger wrote, "Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man, fundamental to our very existence and survival". What did he mean by that? What is the one thing that is fundamental "to our very existence and survival"? Obviously he meant procreation. Burger's LEGAL argument was that marriage is a basic civil right because it's necessary for procreation which is necessary for existence and survival. By that reasoning, marriage is ONLY a basic civil right for those who procreate".

I've heard this argument before. However, it is not "obvious" that CJ Burger was talking about procreation. If he meant to be obvious this was his intention he would have stated that was precisely what he meant.

There's also the consideration of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" It is well-documented that married people statistically outlive unmarried people. Are we depriving homosexuals a year or two of life by not allowing them to marry those they love?

Loving v.Virginia is not the place to look. Lawrence v. Texas is more helpful, and the 14th Amendment more clearly guides our way in this matter.”

Romulus replied on May 26, 2009 at 23:28:31

“Well at least someone knows how to argue the issue using facts an not just emotional opinion. However, I disagree that Lawrence v. Texas has anything to do with SSM. I believe the definitive ruling is Baker v. Nelson.”

“Cramer could do himself a great service by letting Stewart unload everything he's got . If Cramer appears to be taking his lumps and remaining a good sport, he'll do himself a world of good and win over an entirely new audience.

The whole thing smells like a set-up between Steward and Cramer, doesn't it? If it wasn't for the fact that Stewart's unlikely to put his credibiltiy on the line over this I'd suspect collusion. In the end, though, Stewart is a nice guy. He'll be firm but polite, do a little skewering, Cramer will defer to the master and then shake hands and make-up. Everything will be right in the world.”

“Yet, trying to become a better person or feeling better about oneself might be the first step many people need to take. Most of us who serve do it with a sense of the joy it brings. Others may need to dip their toe in the water to feel that. We know how strong that pull toward service is once we've had even a slight taste. Let's use every tactic we can to bring one another forward. Some will come along quicker than others. Those that can't bring themselves to make the world a better place are to be pitied rather than ridiculed.”

I'm proud that you did the right thing and dedicated yourself to bettering yourself and your community. I have to say that Americorps and Civilian Corps have been underfunded and underutilized. I'm not opposed to each American being asked to give service to our nation through programs that benefit communities and offer people training and education.

“Thanks Arianna, for having the guts to say what needs to be said about out of control capitalism. I too believe the laissez faire system has failed as miserably as marxism. Both are out moded systems that may have had some relevence in the 19th Century if they had ever been instituted in their utopian form. Instead, both systems have left common people's lives in a mess. To say this out loud has been a sure way to be painted anti-American in the past. Perhaps we all have had enough of being bamboozled by big business as much as big government.
The "crazy wing" of the conservative movement have been able to pull the wool over Americans' eyes with the myth that liberal social and economic policies rob The People . Yet it has been the modern conservative movement that have given us the devil-may-care exesses of the Reagan and Bush administrations. It is the "free" unregulated market that has brought us to our knees. Not those falsely accused of being "tax and spend" and "social engineering" liberals.
Maybe the greedy, hollow and harmful actions of laissez faire economics can be consigned to the same dustbin of the closed, hollow and harmful actions of Soviet economics. We need pragmatism to move forward. Not the doctrinaire policies of systems that benefit the top rung-holders and leave the middle and working class to do their bidding.”

Obama's Choice Of Warren Is Very Disappointing

Commented Dec 18, 2008 at 22:33:07 in Politics

“I'm with you godfreyguy. We got the same kind of treatment from Clinton, Gore and Kerry. Behind the scenes they wooed us but provided lukewarm-at best-support for us publicly. I think playing the 3rd party card could hurt all of us, but what have we as GLBT Americans really got to lose? NOW is the time to hold Obama and the Dems' feet to the fire re; their commitment to equality. There are other evangelical figures out there that have not been so publicly derisive to GLBT Americans as Warren.”

My guess is that just the thought of a progressive 3rd party will make some arrogant people in the Obama campaign take notice. GLBT people need to stop being so nice. We need to start acting like we can play hard ball too.”

“I'm sure "The Americans or Limited Government Foundation" looked into the legality of sending such letters, and found a way to skirt the law. Even so, this seems like out and out voter intimidation, which I thought was illegal in most jurisdictions. Likely a Federal crime. This is how scummy things have gotten. Decent citizens of all political persuassion should fear what fanatics have done to bring political discourse in the US to an all-time low.
I am frightened by the prospect of what the far-right will do when Mr. Obama is elected. Alot of folks have floated the notion that "blacks will riot" if Obama doesn't win the election. I think that's nonsense. I think that it is far more likely that right-wing demagogues will stir up hatred and make fanatics feel it is their right to take part in illegal, violent and anti-democratic activities against our nation. I am truly worried.”

“My general experience with the likes of Howie Rich is that they send threatening letters but in the end do not commit any offense (generally speaking). The effect on innocent people is one where they tend to believe the threat is real and back off on their support for whatever position they were in. I've had letters sent to me by lawyers on behalf of criminals who had the chutzpah to attempt to intimidate me out of something they wanted. In the law profession, this tactic is used daily. For those who do receive such a letter I recommend making copies of it and taking a copy to your local judge to talk over.”

“In the 1990's rapper/TV star Ice-T released a song called "Cop Killer". At the time there was alot of people up in arms that such a record existed. In it's defense there were folks who defended "Cop Killer" and accused it's detractors as racist. After all, they pointed out, there was no such outcry when Eric Clapton sang "I shot the Sheriff" Apparently everyone managed to forget the song was written by Bob Marley the bi-racial reggae superstar.
The reason people get upset by songs like "Cop Killer" and to a lesser extent "Beer for my Horses" is that they suggest violence and murder are suitable answers to our problems. Songs like "I Shot the Sheriff" and Earl Had to Die" are made-up fantasies and stories set to lyrics. They don't suggest we go out and kill each other. It didn't hurt that The Dixie Chicks took alot of the edge off the song with a humorous video.”
