Denny's Culinary Crime Spree

Denny's Culinary Crime Spree

Commented Jul 27, 2009 at 01:51:54 in Living

“I don't really care if the man was the product of a single mother, or worked his way up from a manager trainee at Red Lobster. Corporate responsibility starts AT THE TOP. If a single meal at Denny's has more sodium in it than the Periodic Tables, then something needs to be done.”

“Here's a hint: Excercise for 90 minutes a day and you can eat whatever you want. I went from 280 to 170 and I now am running 90 minutes a day. I had McDonalds today for lunch AND had pork tenderloin, fried potatos (in light olive oil) and cucumbers in sour cream for dinner..TWO HELPINGS. Later I'll have chips and salsa for a snack. And tomorrow I will get up and run again. For years I counted calories, went on Atkins, tried all kinds of crazy diets.

Who woulda thought all I had to do with move my ass a bit.”

So Long Dad: A Playlist for This Father's Day

Commented Jun 20, 2009 at 12:31:28 in Living

“So sorry for your loss. And re: your playlist, I think Cat Steven's "Father and Son" is perhaps one of the best songs about the relationship between fathers and sons. Tell me every young man hasn't felt like this toward his father and I'll call you a liar:

"How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go."

And I didn't see "That's My Job" by Conway Twitty on your list. That may be for one of two reasons 1) you're not a C&W fan or 2) actually listening to the song will cause any son to turn into a blubbering mass of sobbing flesh - even if his dad just yelled at him for spilling paint in the garage.”

hp blogger David Wild replied on Jun 20, 2009 at 13:03:43

“I am a C&W fan -- and actually made the pilgrimage to Twitty City, so I thank you so much for that beautiful reminder.

As for "Father And Son," I'm a producer of "The Chris Isaak Hour" and we recently had Yusuf on, and it amazes me how enduring and powerful "Father and Son" remains, although in all honesty my dad was a better listener than I'll ever be.”

The Revolution Will Not Be Twitterized

Commented Jun 18, 2009 at 12:15:50 in Media

“Yeah - the professional journalists that started reporting the story on Sunday - two days into the "story".

"Professional Journalists" are all about ACCESS and RATINGS. If Linsday Lohan got married to Britney Spears and they had a foursome on their honeymood with John and Kate, the 24 hour news channels would die of "john and kate + Brohan update-gasms". And the Iran story would be something you barely notice that scrolls at the bottom of the screen.

Just now, some pilot died on a plane and all three channels are leading with it - WHY? HOW IS THIS NEWS to anyone other than the families of those people on the plane? It's sensationalistic and it's "local action news" crap that has seeped into national news coverage. There was no crash, there's no "heros" or "villians". How is this news? And why are professional journalists covering it?”

The Revolution Will Not Be Twitterized

Commented Jun 18, 2009 at 10:46:04 in Media

“146 characters is a novel when you're being shot at.

And to answer your question = "yes" - if the world was not able to see ONE image or receive ONE tweet of what's going on over there, what is happening would be different. In physics it's called the "observer" effect.

If you're human (and I suppose you are) I wonder if you've ever experienced the uniquely human experience of acting differently (better, braver, more restrained, whatever) when you know people are watching you. This is true for the protesters as well as the Iranian government, as I would assume that if they were certain no pictures or tweets would get out, they would be slaughtering people by the score to stop this thing....even stupid, greedy, evil people understand the power of public opinion.

The rest of your post, how our government should take a side in this, really verifies (to me) the fact you have little or no understanding of the Persian mindset toward the west - particually the United States - and the level of distrust most Iranians have against foriegn influence in their country. I suggest you read some of the writings of Professor Ahmad Ashraf before you start asking the US Government to get involved in internal Iranian politics.”

“This from a company that has outsourced the people who take your order in the drive thru to some call center in Arizona or Bangalore.

Let me clue you in - McDonalds doesn't give a rats ass about it's employees. NO PUBLIC CORPORATION DOES. Any company that tells you "our people come first" is LYING TO YOU.

And yet here today, after Exxon and Enron and Union Carbide and Haliburton and the list is ENDLESS, the right STILL clings to the notion that all will be well if we let the free market reign and let business people do whatever they want.

We did that once...Charles Dickens wrote a lot about it. My kids don't work in coal mines or shirtwaiste factories because society came to its senses and realized that capitalism unreigned = serfdom for everyone who doesn't own stock.”

“I really think that us wondering how something happened that we had 1) no part in or b) have no reason to care one way or another is/are really proof that some people need to get lives and find something better to do.

I could spend all day wondering if "Bachelor Party" would have been better if it had been directed by Guillermo del Toro and had Paul Giamatti in a supporting role rather than Adrian Zmed - but then I remember I have a job and a family to feed and other stuff like that so I don't think about it.

I find it ironic that this article was penned by someone named "bourgeois" - I would have thought the name "David Hoity Toity Foo Foo Idle Richy Pants" would have been more suitable for the content discussed.

Now, I'll go back to worrying about starving people and other non-Hollywood stuff.”

“Come on! Who was buying all those gas guzzling SUVs and Trucks? Martians?

Maybe it's time to grow up and stop blaming advertizing for CONVICING us to buy American Gas Guzzlers.

This entire debacle is OUR fault - the MARKET.

You see - we (THE MARKET) have known for some time that oil is a finite resource. We knew that with most of it controlled by people who don't really like us that we were living on borrowed time. Sure, we heard about alternative fuels and electric cars and hybrids and bicycles and all that - but that was for granola eaters - not for US!

So this being a SUPPLY and DEMAND economy, we demanded fuel guzzling cars, trucks and SUVs. So Detroit happily supplied them to us. Bob Segar and Travis Tritt made commercials singing about our big autos - even Led Zeppelin did a Cadillac Commercial!

And the banks were more than happy to give us Zero Down, low interest loans for these behemoths because - after all - the market DEMANDED IT.

And now, our big honking cars are in the driveway - tanks empty. Or perhaps, the repo man has them.

And it's all someone else's fault.

Maybe we bail out Detroit because it's our fault they are in this mess.

And maybe we realize that just because the market WANTS something that doesn't mean it's in the best interest of the country, the economy or humanity.”

Commented Sep 09, 2008 at 13:21:39 in Media

“Let's stop this circle-jerk posing as "analysis" and get to the real issue of why this is even a "race" at all.

The MSM is contolled by about four companies and these compaines want "PROFIT".

Profit = Ad revenue.

Ad revenue = audience members watching and/or reading the "news" in between ads or commericals

Now, the best way to get an audience is to have something EXCITING for them to watch.

And what's more exciting than a "horse race"?

That's why the MSM folds like a house of cards when McCain/Palin say "don't ask her questions".

That's why the MSM reports Democracts saying the sky is "blue" and Republicans saying the sky is "orange with pink polka dots" as reporting the "two sides of the issue".

And these supposed journalists sleep pretty well on the big pile of money they make "reporting" the facts as they fit in their quarterly corporate profit forecast.

The simple fact is this: The MSM's main job is to sell SOAP. Not to inform, not to educate - just to make sure we all go to TGIF and drink Coke Zero.

And propping up an elderly 72 year old man and his neophyte running mate as "equals" in form and content to Obama and Biden is the best way to get viewers to tune in so we can see the lates "E-surance" ad.”

If we actually had qualified leadership that truly gave a sh!t about real people and real problems...well, where are the 'headlines' (profits) in that?”
