November Jobs Report: U.S. Creates 203,000 Jobs, Unemployment Rate Down To 7%

November Jobs Report: U.S. Creates 203,000 Jobs, Unemployment Rate Down To 7%

Commented Dec 6, 2013 at 15:45:45 in Business

“That we have used the same system to compute job numbers for so long is part of the problem. All I'm saying is that I'd like to see more detail about what these jobs are and whether they will aid the economy by being living wage jobs, or will they drag on the economy by being minimum wage jobs. My guess would be that there are a large number of seasonal retail jobs included in this number, but without more detail, how can we know? I'll give the POTUS credit that when he took office he brought us back from the abyss, and I fully understand he is getting no help from a completely dysfunctional congress; but I'm also unwilling to take this job report at anything but face value, which is to say, I don't think it is as positive as some might think.”

“I think you're under a very incorrect assumption. In my opinion, minimum wage should be something around $18 an hour. My post wasn't intended to be on one side or another, it was to state facts. More precisely, the omission of facts that would tell a very different tale. I don't doubt the 204K number, I would just like to know how many of those jobs will pay a living wage. I DO doubt the 7% unemployment number, as it does not count the number of jobless or under-employed.”

Simplecomplexity on Dec 6, 2013 at 15:33:06

“Doubting the numbers is well and good.... it's NOT doubting the numbers when they're bad that irritates me. I'll agree with your minimum wage assessment, but we've been using the data for calculating unemployment numbers the same way for quite some time. IF the way they're calculated has changed, please get us a link to show when and how. Meantime, wouldn't it be nice to send a little nod to the President, since he's not had any help in putting America back to work? Or do you want to muddy this up with the doom and gloom of low wage, unsustainable living wages to it? NOBODY is talking about all of us out here who watch the CEO's of these times, making 700% or more in THEIR paychecks, and the rest of us getting nothing, but what exactly is it you folks WANT? Please, educate me on what you're kvetching about?”

“I'd like to believe this, but I don't think many people believe that the reporting of unemployed is very accurate. Assuming the 204K added jobs number is accurate, I think a more telling number would be how many of those jobs pay a living wage. I don't really care how many more people are being hired by the fast food or retail industries at minimum wage, that is totally meaningless. Count ALL people of working age who are unemployed and ONLY count jobs that pay a living wage. The rest is all just window dressing, smoke and mirrors.”

“Assuming your "reality" is the official story, I will tell you that I'm not angry with certain groups and that is not what causes me to disbelieve the official story. I'm not on board with the idea that Bush and his cohorts planned this, and that should not even be part of the conversation. I do have eyes though, and I know when a building collapses like building 7 did, it wasn't because of damage it sustained by the towers' collapse. There is no precedent for that kind of a collapse anywhere else in the world, even in countries that don't have near the standards that we do for our buildings. Consider how much damage the Murrah building took when it was blown up, and it had to be torn down after the blast. If you choose to keep your eyes closed on this issue, that's your choice, but I will not close my eyes unless and until, at the very least, there is a new investigation done of the events of 9/11. That investigation would need to be done by pilots, engineers and demolitions experts from other countries who cannot be influenced by anyone from this country. If they come to the same conclusions that our farce of an investigation did, I'll never say another word about it, but I seriously doubt that would be the case.”

“I have great respect for Chomsky, but he is being very naive about how easy it is for scientists and engineers to do the professional papers that he talks about. He doesn't know what the presence of nano-thermite means? Really? I don't care whether the Bush administration was involved or not, that's not the issue. The issue is that building 7 could not possible collapse the way it did without the use of demolitions that would take weeks to install. The way the host shut down any other conversation about the topic should tell Chomsky what people who want a new investigation are facing. It's hard to do professional papers if you're going to be faced with losing your job as a result. Rather than this being the conclusive blow to the truth movement, it is anything but. It simply validates how difficult it is to pursue the truth in this country. Most people in nearly every nation on the planet don't believe the official story, but of course, they still have access to news media rather than the infotainment that we are stuck with.”

“If people stay away in droves, maybe it will change next year, but I don't hold out much hope of that. There are more than enough mindless shopping zombies who will justify the decision of those stores who decide to be open on T-Day. I think it's actually a sickness that some people have to buy on impulse and especially when the see something on sale that they just CAN'T live without.”

“The word "sale" really does have a scary effect. Long ago I worked in a supermarket produce aisle. In a normal week, we'd sale barely any blueberries, but if they went on sale (usually only pennies off/pound), suddenly we couldn't keep the shelves stocked. One day a customer asked me where the kiwi fruit were that were on sale that week. I pointed toward the front of the aisle. He then asked me if I could tell him what they looked like. Apparently, he had no idea what one was, but they was on sale, so he needed them.”
