“It appears that these guest list for these events are far too fluid to simple say, it's the secret service's fault, people are either on the list or they are not. Apparently, they try to prevent empty seats at state dinners, so as folk drop out (swine flu, intervening domestic spats, whatever), others are commandeered to fill seats. Under those circumstances, the social office needs to work with the secret service. It's one thing to try and determine whether persons entering are a threat to the President and quite another to determine whether they were invited.”

“I have had several Middle Eastern women as very close friends who have told me that. They were not happy with their lot in life. But I guess this aspect could happen in any culture. I think the problem is groupthink that can happen anywhere and in any human system of association. It can often happen in organized religions and it can happen in entire cultures. I think the salvation of the world lays in the empowerment of the individual human conscience. Mass groupthink is one of the most destructive forces in human history. It always leads to organizational or cultural suicide. You can see it in our own country over and over in American history and you can see it as one of the main causes of the social dysfunction at the root of many of the problems in the Middle East. May this young woman rest in peace in a level of being freed from the stupidity of this sorry planet.”

“"there's a big difference between religious views and cultural norms. arab men have much contempt for women, period"
Many sociologists and historians would say that religious views form much of the basis for cultural norms. Many observers would say that historically the more religious a country's population is, the more their religion will inform and shape their culture. While many Arabs would not agree that Arab men have contempt for women, they would cite the Koran and other Islamic religious writings to demonstrate why it is right and proper for women to live relatively restricted lives, with comparatively less legal and economic freedom. I think may western and Muslim commentators would agree that Muslim women live lives much different from western women and the basis for those differences can be found in how Islam helped shape Muslim society.

“Arabs have had the bad luck of a lot of foreign military interventions in recent decades. Women always suffer more when their men are getting brow-beaten by other men. It's the "broken home" syndrome of a society under stress.
I'm not saying things were perfect before, but Iraq used to have women wearing low-cut gowns at social functions. It was rather easy-going, not unlike Turkey.
Afghanistan was a destination for world travellers to enjoy a peaceful mystical vacation in the orient, to enjoy some hashish with wise elders in the mountains.
It's important for people to let their cultural rage subside to see the easy-going side which has been obscured by decades of conflict. Iraq has been getting kicked around for a long time, even within the span of my life. They've been served an unprovoked war/sanction/war sandwich by Bush, Clinton and Bush. It's lasted a long damned time.”
