NY 23 Election Results: Bill Owens Beats Doug Hoffman

“The national media likes to have something to talk about - it is really evident when you know the real story. NJ has more reg. dems than gop (about 700k more), but the number of 'unaffiliateds' is almost as much as the gop and dems put together (they never mention that). Christie Whitman, our last gop gov who left after two terms in 2001, went to work with the Bush administration (led the EPA) and was basically run out of town by them - they are not the same kind of people. NJ gops and dems are basically center right or left - it is a very moderate state and when either party wins a statewide election, it is barely newsworthy. The state certainly leans toward the dems, but this is a moderate state. Corzine was not a bad gov - he got caught up in bad timing and the age-old NJ problem of insane property taxes. If Christie does nothing about that, he will also be one term. Interviews with exiting voters shows that it was more a case of Corzine losing than Christie winning.”

“That's mostly the case in NJ - this is not Mississippi. Jon Corzine did an okay job, he just bore the brunt of the bad econony that is a national problem and had it exacerbated by the continuing problem of property taxes here in NJ. BTW, property taxes are the major funding vehicle for local schools in NJ - about 70% of my entire tax bill goes directly to the local school district. Also, each small municipality has its own government, police force, fire department, etc. My town has about 15k and has all of the above except that we share a school system with the neighboring town that has about 30k people. Everyone since Jesus has been promising to lower taxes - it has reached a crisis point. I have TONS of friends of friends who are Republicans in NJ - they are also pro-choice, don't go to church (I do) and really don't resemble their GOP brotheren in lots of other places. In fact, many of my GOP friends in NJ voted for Obama because they were so offended by Palin. Look for a lot of one-term governors in NJ until someone figures it out. To assign ANYnational significance to this race is pure NONSENSE!”

“This is why the financial companies need to be regulated - the bailout HAD to be done and your politicians are being dishonest with you when they claim otherwise. The real culprits are the politicians that don't want to see any reform. Whenever Wall Street is not regulated, they veer away from their central businesses and cause a financial crisis. It has happened over and over and over and...”

“Don't hold your breath on that. Anyway, only a small number of people are making the outrageous money and making the rules. The typical Wall Street person is a relatively well-paid working stiff. Having come from a blue collar background and now very close to Wall Street - the statement that they don't work any harder is not true. The hours some of these people put in is mind boggling and they are mostly a very honest lot - it didn't many worms to spoil that apple. The rules that would be put in place would only limit the risk they can take, so that they can't bring down the entire financial system with them. But there is a lot of money to be made by providing needed, honest services. By the way, most of the people I know making good money on Wall Street came from middle class backgrounds - only in America.”

Strong families made all the difference. This is, unfortunately, not nearly the first crazy act of violence we've heard about. The difference is that we can see this one.”

“It is mindboggling to me that people are so shortsighted and misinformed. Unless you have enough resources to pay for any future catastrophic medical emergency out of your pocket, without going bankrupt, you should be terrified at the way the current system works. Healthcare premiums have doubled in the last 10 years, will double again in the next 7 years. Thirty percent of employers now say they can't give raises because they need to cover rising premium expenses. About 20% of claims are denied outright, and anything that costs more than a few dollars must be pre-approved by the insurance company that covers you. Trust me, they deny lots of expensive coverage - it is just not profitable. The White House needs to keep harping on the point that DOING NOTHING IS NOT AN OPTION! In another decade, we'll look at employer medicare the same way we look at employer bonuses - only for a lucky few. America, you need to WAKE UP - you quality of life and your way of like is at stake.”

“Never gives credit is a very strong statement here. I have heard the complaints over the years and because of that have listened to Serena very carefully after her losses and your claim is simply not true. In fact, her walking across court to congratulate Clijsters (who was still in the dark at that point) was the appropriate thing to do. The claims that she consistently acts like a child are completely without basis. Once again, there is a lot of selective memory going on here.”
