“And as a Senior I won't doubt that there are Seniors opting out of AARP over this.
Why? Because they're believing the scare tactics of the GOP. And, of course, some are legitimate Republicans who think that any stand of AARP opposed by the GOP is grounds for bailing.
Then there are those that are just gullible to the extreme. I know some, and have actually managed to "quell" their fears, though it wasn't easy what with the fact
they also watch Fox News.”

“Off base on both counts.
By the way, two points you right-wingers love to overlook about Medicare:
First, Seniors on the average receive $3 worth of treatment for each dollar they ever pay into the system.
Second, up until this year, both parties were aware of the fiscal shortcomings of Medicare. Both parties recognized the need for trimming some costs, reducing fraud, in the system. In fact, John McCain called for about a trillion dollars worth of "trimming" during the campaign.
Yet, yet, when Democrats now come forth and point out the cost issue, and the need to deal with it,
right-wingers seize on it as a tool for fear-mongering. For purely political puroses.
Owe it. You're doing it too.”

“It's not the reform plan that's worrying many people. It's more general perception that as a democracy, we are becoming increasingly handicapped in our ability to function at the highest political levels. In particular, as many analysts have written, in the Senate.
Perhaps our politician s...no the populace at large...ne ed to review what the Greeks wrote when trying to defend democracy as the best form of government, and what was required to make both good and efficient. A key concept for them was the requirement for "civic virtue" in the hearts of politician s....somet hing that's been all but lost, I fear (and this concept of civic virtue was still alive in the minds of our Founding Fathers, by the way).”

“They voted "for" a program in 2003 that had no mechanisms at all in it for creating off-setting revenues. They passed a huge program (NCLB) that was a chronically underfunded state mandate from the outset. That's the basis of the article's claim of hypocrisy.
But hypocrisy is an SOP in much of politics anyway. Why are Republicans here not willing to wear the hat when it's fits them?”

“I'm going to be very interested once there's a Bill in place just how "correct" all these Republican fear-mongerers are, be it Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Dick Morris or whomever.
On a more logical, rational level (for now): Since every industrialized country has some form of government health care (all of them with a stronger gvt role than what we'll have), we'd expect to see these d*eath panels and e*uthanasia, etc, operating there. Hmm....fun ny how you can't find them.
And if the health care in these countries was so repressive, so frightening, so bad, you'd expect the satisfaction level to be quite low. Certainly below ours. But with the narrow exception of Germany (a bunch of curmedgeons), every major country's populace gives their health care system a higher satisfaction rating than we do ours.
Just some things for the scared populace to consider. Our job is to make them confront these rational
realities.”

“You're being contradictory to some extent if you're going to abandon the Democratic party as a whole for the actions of petulant progressives. And while I don't think most progs will turn their back on the party in 2010, enough might in a handful of critical non-blue dog districts to cost us seats.
That said, I agree - being a four decade long Democrat - that many progs run the risk of being ideologues to the extent that the realities of politics, and the long struggle of Dems to even get to this point, is lost on them.”

“I couldn't disagree more. It was conventional-wisdom Democrats that gave us the "electable" John Kerry rather than Howard Dean who would have beaten Bush because he was consistent on his opposition to the Iraq War. It was the establishment Democrats who thought Obama was unelectable and that we needed a Clinton on the ticket to win.
The "realities of politics" is that you look like opportunistic flip-flopping corporate shills if you don't actually fight for what you and your base believe in. That's a political reality that seems to be lost on you. Another is that a wholesale giveaway to the insurance industry is not a pragmatic step in the right direction for the Democrats; it's a political suicide pact. Insurance rates are going to go up for the majority of people - those with private insurance right now - because insurance companies will need to offset their losses from insuring people with pre-existing conditions. The public option is needed to safeguard against escalating insurance rates.
So when the majority of people's insurance rates go up as a result of the Democrats' Bill, how happy are independents going to be with the Dem party? Even your conventional wisdom should answer that for you.
With respect to your view that progressives are no-compromise ideogues, keep in mind that most progressives want a single-payer healthcare system, which would result in much bigger long-term savings than the current plans. The public option IS the compromise.”

“You're right ...
I probably wouldn't leave the Party, but if the Progressives turn our country back over to the Republicans, I can't imagine feeling any allegiance to them or to their values. It would be like a moderate Republican choosing to politically align himself with the birthers and teabaggers. They are hypocrites if they do, and I would feel like a hypocrite if I aligned myself with a party that no longer represented me!
I know that the Progressives do not represent the entire party, but if they were to make that kind of political impact, then they have an awful lot of pull.
But having said all of that, you're still right, and I'll still be a Democrat, no matter how disillusioned I would feel.”
