Journalism 2009: Desperate Metaphors, Desperate Revenue Models, And The Desperate Need For Better Journalism

“I still haven't been convinced that the "demise" of major newspapers and serious magazines would not have a serious negative impact on investigative journalism/reporting.
Especially now that television is no longer even doing documentaries, let alone investigative pieces (OK,
there is still some of it on PBS).
I understand the love affair with the web, but until I actually see a blog site break a major news story that
doesn't just involve using the web itself, then I might feel better.
Until then, I'll keep my subscriptions to my local paper and the NY Times going, along with the two news magazines.”

“Saw Thomas Ricks on CSPAN today....he said flat out that this country would be better served if cable news stations never even existed....and people would have to pay more attention to CSPAN.
Whatever.
And I see yet another conservative blogger of some note is saying "no way" to the current Republican party.

“The problem with government sector jobs is that they're short term for the most part, and do have an impact on the deficit/debt.
Back in the 30s, Americans were willing to run that deficit risk. I'm not so sure now. I almost wish we had something akin to the national referendums that some European countries have and let the American people at least voice which path they'd like to take.
As for the private sector: there is a historical job recovery lag....last one was over 4 years. And this one is compounded by the fact that disposable income has been flat for a decade.....hence people
are afraid to spend. A vicious circle, and to expect miracles from Obama is ridiculous.”

“This is slightly along the lines of what Germany did successfully to limit job loss...Krugman has a column on it.
Of course, how much would this add to the deficit? (Since most people by now have been scared into thinking that we're going to collapse because of the debt)”

“Gee....he didn't listen to Paul Krugman! OK. I'll accept that. But Obama apparently didn't think he could get a mega-stimulus through Congress at the time. And Obama had no control over TARP
money spent prior to January 21 (i.e. about half of it).
Maybe more of the same, maybe just Obama doing what he thought best.....At least in the long run I'll trust him more than I ever would Bush/Paulson. And hope I'm right.”

I favor lending to small businesses, of course, but one reason the banks aren't is because they aren't
convinced that these won't end up being a new round of toxic loans. Until there is sign of demand, small business might not even want to go into debt.”

“Le'ts be clear. If it is Obama's "Katrina", it refers to the impact it might have on the next election. Because otherwise the two don't correlate in any way. The situation facing this administration is so much more complex, and even contradictory, that it in no way approaches Katrina, where Bush was just plain incompetent.
For example, the squeeze facing Obama is between a lot more money spent to help boost jobs on the one hand, and increasing concern about the deficit on the other.”

But the point isn't about legal or illegal per se, it's about finding a workable and just solution to this dilemma. And the bottom line that many people out there won't accept anything short of the impossible and unconstitutional: rounding up millions of illegals and deporting them, children who are American citizens included.

“In early August I had more own confrontation with one of the Obama=Hitler sign bearers. Fortunately it was only verbal. I told him that my father was in lthe 84th Division of the US Army and fought in Holland and Germany at the end of the war. While he never personally saw any of the concentration camps, he had observed some of the atrocities the Nazis had committed in Europe and learned of others from fellow soldiers. The tea party sign holder was probably in his late 20s or early 30s. I told him that I found his sign offensive to my late father and to all those victims of Hitler. And then told him that if he wanted to find a
potential link between then and now, this country and Nazi Germany, it would be in the form of Glenn Beck and Joseph Goebbels.
I don't know if any of it really registered with the guy. Probably not.”
