“I suggested last night (tongue in cheek comment) that we can save a trillion dollars in the next ten years if we make a deal with the warlords that we will employ all the eligible workers in afghanistan at double their usual pay (per capita in afghanistan is 420 per year) to develop afghan industries and agriculture and buy all their products. That way, we get something really cheap and get afghan goodwill. Whatever military strategy we have there will not work. Never worked before in the written history of man in that area.”

“Chess is televised in the Philippines. It's like golf, except you have to think really hard with the analysts when you're watching it on TV. They have discussions between moves that are sometimes heated if you can believe it. I enjoy watching it even if I suck playing against someone. It's very different analyzing someone else's game cause you're not under tremendous time pressure.”

banker67 replied on Jan 05, 2010 at 18:31:48

“Agree. I have seen audiences of more than 300 spectators sit silently in an auditorium for hours watching a top-level game -- on big electronic monitors, of course.
As you say, the difference between watching golf or football, and watching chess is that the chess spectator participates in every move by trying to figure out what the master will really do, and why. The spectator learns as he or she watches.
It's difficult to convey to those who don't follow chess how absorbing a top match is. Similarly, it's not easy to convince me to watch top-level bowling, though I certainly respect the talent on display.
Item: Alzheimer's is astonishingly rare among aged chess players. Quite a few impressive players are in their sixties and seventies, including Victor Korchnoi whom even Magnus would have to take seriously. Magnus would likely win, but he would never take Korchnoi for a pushover.
I understand that some people don't like even the idea of chess, but those who are outstanding players (not me) deserve serious respect.”
