“I choose England as my reference since they have consistent records going back to the 1700's so one can trace whole generations of families with a birth death and marriage. The U.S. never kept reliable vital records until the later 1800's excepts in some big cities.”

“I have an extensive genealogical database. Many people lived in their 60's 70's and 80's a hundred years ago, even 200 years ago. More died as children which makes an average useless.”

“Sorry, here's some from 1900
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cabf1905/San-Francisco/SFMAR171900-APR091900.htm
I forgot my own parameters.    And note, I didn't pick the one with the most deaths under 60.  It was just the first one they had for the turn of the 20th century.”

FrenchKissed on Apr 1, 2013 at 19:29:03

“Yes, of course many lived to their 60s, 70s and 80s.  But plenty also died as adults during childbirth, in industrial accidents or house fires, due to TB and syphilis, and what have you.

Here, take a look at the death records from 1872 in Northern California http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/gnl/death72.htm
(there are links for further volumes) you'll see that it is more common for a person to die in their 30s or 40s than in their 60s or 70s. (note it's a little confusing the way they did the age.  Someone who lived to be 50 years, 5 months and 24 days would be written 50/05/24 if exact age at death is known)”

“The supreme court open the door for all the appeals that last for decades. Every mass shooter has some kind of mental illness, so according to the supreme court we should pity them and lock them up for the rest of there lives. Now the state has to pay for expert after expert to say what we already know. He's nuts. The reason he could commit such an act is because he has lost his moral conscience. The supreme court should take up this concept.”

“Wouldn't that be disappointing, if they don't even make a ruling. It would go back to Congress”

teecee656 on Mar 28, 2013 at 23:07:15

“If SCOTUS doesn't make a ruling, the 9th District's decision, as well as the New York's court decisions stand. Both courts have ruled in favor of same-sex marriages. It is those rulings that have been appealed to SCOTUS. The question of standing remains. Neither the state or US attorney generals mounted an appeal. So the first question is wether anyone else has standing (a legal interest) before SCOTUS to to even bring an appeal.”

“I voted for Joe Donelley (D-IND) knowing that he was fortunate that Indiana Republicans elected a deeply religious ultra conservative opponent or Donelley would not have won. Donelley is a Democratic Senator only in terms of the potential for him to vote for only the rarest Democratic legislation that the President desperately needs.

If a Republican had won in Indiana, Democrats would not have even gotten that vote. Donelly's goal is to be conservative enough to get re-elected in Conservative Indiana. But he faces the reality that he could lose anyway, without standing for liberal principles.

He's in a tough place just like every liberal who lives in Indiana. Constant vigilance and maybe we can outlive and outvote the bigots who have hunkered down with the false belief that they have god on their side.”

As a growing business when you hit a threshold and are required to fork out a large sum of money then it will effect business growth one way or the other.

“The uncertainty associated with this change is going slow economic growth. Those companies that don't offer health benefits now will have to change their business model to accommodate the extra expenses; that will mean fewer jobs and higher prices.”

Jerry Barry on Mar 24, 2013 at 01:51:54

“If companies aren't paying for health benefits for their employees, who pays for employees healthcare when they get sick?
We the taxpayers pay for employees without healthcare. Because people without healthcare go to the Emergency Rooms at the closest hospital and get treated because by law the ER can't turn anyone away who needs medical care.
If a business can't provide healthcare for its employees well I guess the business will have to close and go out of business. Another company will pickup the old companies customers and hopefully will pay their employees healthcare cost.”
