“Though it's never a good idea to generalize, the sons and daughters of second and third generation immigrants do tend to have an advanced work ethic enculcated at an early age... and i do see this in Hawaii, especially among the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese.”

“It is common knowledge here in Hawaii that some haoles (Caucasians) never get used to the fact that they are in the minority here, and am not at all surprised to know that Palin is one of them.

To be comfortable around others who are different that you are requires being a grounded person with a confidence in oneself and a genuine respect for the culture of others. Travel and exposure to other mores helps.

I find it a blessing that Hawaii exudes that respect for multiculturalism, exemplified by the way President Obama acts on the world stage.

Palin represents just the opposite, small town mentality that Sinclair Lewis wrote about at the turn of the last century...seems nothing much has changed in Hickville, USA. These are Palin's base.”

“Right - o, donbrown...I think most people, when surrounded by folks who aren't like them, would enjoy it, and try to soak up as much of the culture as they can...sometimes even coming home speaking with the "twang" of the people they've been around for a while.
But I guess Palin freaked out when she realized that she was surrounded by people whom she wasn't going to be able to wink at...and sail through college on her so-called "beauty".”

“I agree with your whole sarcastic statement... except public schools here are terrible -- a sad leftover from the plantation era..separated by language.

See this to understand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJvu6_MJonM

Most people with money in Hawaii send their kids to private schools. President Obama went to THE elite private school in Hawaii, Punahou -- a fact most news media who don't know the islands miss.

It is not because he had money, but brains and connections, and attended on a scholarship. Cost is $16,000 per year -- for high school.

Check out their site: http://www.punahou.edu/page.cfm?p=1539

“I wonder if Palin even knows that President Obama's brother-in-law is Asian? (Chinese Canadian)

I don't doubt what her father says is true -- or that it would even occur to him that it's offensive. Typical of the type she attracts -- not very bright people who have never left the U.S. and have little interest in the rest of the world.”

RobinSeattle replied on Dec 06, 2009 at 20:05:23

I also wonder how she reacts when Wendy Gramm (Korean-American), Michelle Malkin (Filipino-American) or Elaine Chao (Chinese-American) are around.”

“Wow... Hawaii is the one place in the U.S. where the races actually get along pretty well. It is the most ethnically mixed place in the country and what the Mainland is gradually becoming,

Haoles (Caucasian visitors) VERY seldom express it, but i have witnessed the sense of discomfort some tourists since the islands are about 70% Asian or Pacific Islander. But after living here a while most don't even notice color in such a mixed society. You regard people as people period... which is REALLY the Christian way.

This is what makes President Obama so comfortable in his own skin and among all types of people.

The rest of the country can learn so much from Hawaii...

Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me at all that Sarah Palin retreated to homogenous Idaho to find her comfort zone. She is very unChristian in her thought patterns, as I'm afraid many on the right are.”

“$29 a ticket -- for that junk? During a severe recession?

When are these neocon followers going to realize that these people -- Beck. Palin, Limbaugh, Armey...all of them only regard these fools as rubes they can milk for money.

They just are not smart enough to realize it.

Palin has even banned photos and her pit stops and charging $15 for her own photographer to provide one!

My fantasy is that one day the tea party crowd suddenly wakes up and realizes they are being taken -- but I won't hold my breath.

“What people don't seem to have figured out yet is that the ONLY people sitting at home watching regular television are people too dull or without enough money to afford anything other entertainment choices.

This is why Fox scores highest among the Nielsen families.

People with higher intellect have other choices -- theater, dinner out, opera, movies...you know, a life!

And people with higher intellect are over the regular TV thing,

We look at programs online on our own schedule. Fox news people haven't figured this out yet, or can't afford a computer.”

“I have often thought this, and glad to see it speculated at a high level. If Bin Laden had been caught or killled in 2001, the plans for an attack on Iraq, officially raised right after 9/11, would have been much harder to rationalize.

The Bush administration realized the only way to gin up the Iraq attack would be to fabricate a link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, and we heard the implied link many many times -- especially from Cheney, Rice, Feith, Rumsfeld, and the now disgraced Wolfowitz...all feeding Bush the same information, which he parroted.

The president then, as opposed to Obama. was not bright enough to question it.”
