“I think you don't understand how home ownership works in America. When you buy a house on mortgage, you own the property 100%, and at the same time you 'own' a loan which you are obligated to repay. The property and the loan are connected but separate. For instance, the property and the loan may or may not have the same value (depending on several things, including the down payment).

“You are neglecting the financial effects of default, foreclosure or bankruptcy on the buyer. The fall out on the finances is the issue, not losing the home.”
