Government Shutdown Begins As Congress Fails To Pass Continuing Resolution

Government Shutdown Begins As Congress Fails To Pass Continuing Resolution

Commented Oct 1, 2013 at 11:57:31 in Politics

“It's being reported that 800,000 "non-essential" workers are getting furloughed as a result of this, so called, government shutdown. Is this true? What is a "non-essential" worker and how much do they get paid? It's also being reported that VA benefits claims will be slowed down. What's new with that? It's also being reported that the Lincoln Memorial will be closed. Why? It's an open structure with no doors. It is also being reported that all Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid payments and our to soldiers will continue. Sounds like this government shut down may be a good thing!”

“Aircraft safety inspectors furloughed. Ditto imported food safety inspectors. And on and on. This is serious, not a joke. Trivializing it is childish.

And BTW it is adding to the deficit and debt not reducing them.”

“Isn't it true that the cycle goes something like this: Global warming leads to melting and the breaking up of the ice cap, which then floats south, which in turn cools the gulf stream, which in turn causes a cooling of the atmosphere.... then a new ICE AGE begins? All of which can transpire in less than 30 years? Humankind has evolved a lot since the last ICE AGE, but I don't think anyone can stop it from happening. IT'S TOO LATE!!!”

(Right or Left) Perception of the way things are appears to depend on which side of the aisle you are on or what your individual circumstances are at this moment. We will all know soon enough which path our great country will take.”

“From the comments I have received thus far, it seems that "trial balloons" are the norm. I get that! BUT Are we so divided in the US right now that the leaders, both democrats and republicans are letting those who scream the loudest or those that contribute the most to their campaign's really do get to decide which way this country is to head. That is extremely wrong and it has to be changed, I hope before it's to late. Any suggestions?”

Commented May 7, 2012 at 10:52:08 in Politics

“This is typical and it's all to common for the Obama Administration. This is their way of putting out trial balloons, so they can get a quick reaction either good or bad from the public and the news media. They make decisions on policy depending on the political polls and not if it's good for America or not. Do you really think that the messengers didn't get permission to present certain viewpoints?? If the reaction is bad”

Utopian Sky on May 7, 2012 at 10:58:43

“We have a democratic system where politicians are elected based on a popular vote.

That means it is almost impossible for a politician to do what is right, they can only do what is popular. If they try and do what is right, they will simply be replaced by someone who panders.

Imagine if children could vote on who their parents were, thus what food they eat and activities they do. They would never do homework or eat vegetables again.

You can't blame the parents for that- and in this case you can't blame the politicians for watching the polls.

It is how the whole flawed system works.”

“Instead of doing what the Republicans do by just saying things and not caring what people think and wonder why they are losing their base along with minority and women voters. If they keep this up.. the only people who will vote for them are the doubledigit I Q crowd that supports them no matter what they do.”

“I recently found a neat Android App, Mobile HERO 24-7, that converts your Android Phone into a Mobile Personal Emergency Device. The great thing is that it runs in the background so you can continue to use all the features on your phone. If you have a personal emergency, like a fall, Mobile HERO 24-7 automatically contacts a call center with a fall alert and with your GPS location, so, if you are hurt, help can be sent immediately.”

“Ms Streisand, I am a fan of your singing, but not a fan of your politics. But this is America and so far, we still have an explicit right to state our opinion. My opinion is that this country is in the process of unstoppable change from a mostly united nation to a mostly divided nation with distinct opposing views. There are hard core opinions on the right and hard core opinions on the left. Neither side is correct all of the time. I think that the majority of us Americans agree with some issues championed by the right and some that are championed by the left. Politicians on both sides of the aisle just want to get reelected, so they spend all of their time fundraising and trying to keep their contributors happy. The problem is that most of those contributors, the politician cater too, either lean to far to the left or to far to the right all of the time. We the people, are left out. We need more middle of the road politicians so the majority of the people will actually have a voice!”
