• Gay men and women were and still are rejected by their own families. African Americans were never disowned by their families because they were black.

• Gay people were cast out from the schools, churches and circles of friends. African Americans always had their schools, friends and churches

• Gay men and women were locked up for life in insane asylums for being gay. African Americans were not.

• Gay men and women were convicted of violating sodomy laws and locked up as criminals and even executed for being gay.

• It's 2009, African Americans have been protected from discrimination by state and federal laws since 1964. Gay men and women are fighting to repeal laws that require federal and state governments to discriminate against us.

• Gay men and women are still fired from their jobs just for being gay and in most of the US they have no legal recourse.

• Gay men and women are still being discharged from the military because they are gay.

• Gay men and women are not free to marry their partners in all but six states.

So, the next time you feel the urge repeat that that "gay people haven't suffered from discrimination like black people", think of what you have just read and how ridiculous and offensive the comment you are about to make is.”

LBGT people have been through different kinds of oppression, though historically for a much longer time.

It's hardly a *perfect* comparison, but people who say there is *none* also tend to be in denial of just how bad things were and still are for a lot of LBGT people. They tend to ignore the Holocaust, for one: for another, they tend to ignore the beatings, that it's perfectly legal to discriminate against us in much of the country, that we live with certain amounts of fear of random violence over who we are, we've got churches and politicians trying to bust up our families, take our property, incite hatred against us, not to mention constant degradation of our human dignity based on ugly stereotypes, cops and often communities who really don't care if we're lynched, the government as a whole at *best* negotiating about *how* human we are...

There is plenty of comparison. If you'd been through some of what we have, it'd look pretty darn familiar to you, too.”

“How has obama worked wonders exactly? You act like this is a republican congress or that everyone in there hates him. Its 60 40 democrats - the largest majority we have had in forever and the public still supports the wide majority of his original policies and like him in general. But he has done nothing as of yet, NOTHING!!!! Its almost a year and we have what? A massive bank bailout starting by bush and finished by obama without a single regulation on wall street in return for the trillions. Obama didnt just drop the ball on that, he fell down the steps and the ball knocked him out on the way down. Healthcare reform is slowly turning into tort reform. Obama had every opportunity in a million speeches to just tell congress that the public option was essential to any real reform and he failed when he said there were other ways to do this because there isn't and certainly congress will never come up with anything better to control insurance profits and cost.. More importantly, the majority of the public and over 80 percent of his democratic voters support this and oppose reform without it. He is now thinking about escalating a war which seems to have no end and is rapidly losing public support. W”

“e have not shutdown Guatanamo for good and if we fail to get a public option and healthcare reform is completely toothless, there is little chance of us getting legit env't reform as obama already told Europe that the US is not capable of fixing global warming with aggressive emissions cuts like they are. I certainly don't see Obama discussing the possibility of cutting lobbying and campaign funding to prevent the clearly pervasive corruption in congress either so excuse me when i say that the only thing that has been a wonder so far is obama's rapid transformation for liberal politician to centrist president. Centrist s who crave bipartisanship will never invoke major changes in this country - i guess that was never really obamas intention anyway or certainly hasnt been so far but i'll remain cautiously hopeful.”

“I can tell a lie when he says he'll do one thing and does the exact opposite: Posting bills, no earmarks, no signing statements, etc. I agree that the US was left in HORRIBLE shape by Bush. I criticized Bush daily for his corruption, and hoped for better from Obama--I'm still waiting. He has spent or committed to spend FAR more than Bush spent. Don't y'all realize that the Government doesn't produce ANYTHING but debt and then it confiscates OUR money to pay it off? And if you REALLY believe that we've stopped the economy from falling off a cliff, you're gonna' be in for a rude awakening when the ripples from the commercial real estate defaults spread and when millions more home loans adjust to unaffordable levels in 2010-2011, forcing more defaults and bankruptcies. Again, I ask, what has he done that has benefited YOU personally? Your dollars are worth less than ever, runaway inflation or devaluation of the dollar is inevitable. And, as i continue to point out--Wall street and the Banks are being ALLOWED to continue the same risky behaviors that caused the crisis. To add insult to injury, they're now doing it with OUR money. I WISH OBAMA WAS WHO MANY THOUGHT HE WAS--I've YET to see any evidence.”
