“I wouldn't mind it if we impressed the world with a very large stick. The one that somebody hid after Teddy Roosevelt made it famous. The dinner is fine, the linens as someone pointed out, are probably a tribute to Indian silks. Yes, we have to make sure democracy goes forward, not Islamic fundamentalism, and as long as India keeps things on an even keel, things will be fine.”

“India is merely accepting the job opportunities made possible by American companies who have little concern about America's unemployment rate or lack of health benefits. President Obama was not the President for the last 8 years while this practice proliferated, please speak to the previous administration if you wish to register a complaint.”

textynn replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 19:55:58

“Outsourcing food stamp and welfare jobs to India is new in the last year. IT is also a total slap in the face to America's working poor. Sorry, but I'm a counselor and I deal with welfare all the time. This is something completely new and is happening on Obama's watch. Previously, I worked for disability services and those resources were scratched by Bush and those jobs trimmed to pseudo-jobs and mostly cut. Now, the whole welfare system, which is gigantic by the way, is turning into a ghost town. Major building that have served for years with many hundreds of employees are now dark. This has just happened, even if it started on Bush's watch there is no excuse for these easy jobs that could be done by even the fairly uneducated to go to India. There's no excuse. Say what you will.”

“There's some fuzzy logic involved here, mainly because many of these countries such as China exist as authoritarian capitalistic countries. That's basically materialistic consumerism without the democracy part. Not that we're a shining beacon as is mentioned, but we have to be honest in assessing Asia as well. What is not broached here is the subject of Islamization, which must be faced squarely if Europe and the U.S. are to maintain their societies. We ascribe to freedom of religion, not understanding that in Islamic countries, choice of religion is not an issue. As is demonstrated by events that transpired this week, the issue cannot be ignored.”

“People must realize that chimps do not react and think like people. We impose those characteristics upon them, believing their imitative abilities to be human-like. This is not true. Keeping an animal as a companion who would truly rather be with his/her own kind is cruel and should be unlawful. This lovely woman will forever pay for her friend's lack of good judgment.”

“At the recent Women's Conference held in California, Maria Shriver commented that she and her mother phoned each other every day. I don't think that means that she was a "smother mother." I think it is a wonderful thing that women can extend the mother-daughter bond into adulthood by sharing ideas on life, politics, art, music, and life in general. I am not one who thinks they should all go off into their own private world - what would have been the point of emotional investment within the 18 years that they spent within the family unit? I have four wonderful children and love hearing from them and am eager to know what is happening in their lives. They are welcome at home anytime.”

“I thought this survey was odd myself. Saying "Utah ranked high and conservative is why" seems ridiculous on a survey where the South, which is also very conservative, ranked middle to low on what was a small spread to begin with. Dig a little deeper, guys.

Also, the words "right-leaning" are linked to the Life Science site, but the article featured on that page today, 11/11/09, is "7 Thoughts That Are Bad For You". If you're liberal, I am sure that's hilarious.

But in all seriousness, the article they should have pointed you to is here: http://www.livescience.com/health/080507-liberal-conservative.html

Take from that what you will.

This survey is too generalized and dumb, thank god it was Gallup and not a govt. project.”

“Since over 7,000 have already commented, I don't know that this will add anything new, except that we have to be diligent in pressing for the reforms that we voted for. Evidently none of these people supporting Bachman & the Fox corporation did not have the same insurer as myself, Mid-West Life. Although I was paying in excess of $360 a month for years, when I had an emergency, they discovered fine print that said I was not covered. Surprise! And guess who is one of their featured speakers and "editorial" contributors? Cantor, that's who!! This company recently settled a multi-state lawsuit where they had to pay millions, probably a drop in the bucket for this company who has reserved seats in most of our congressional member's offices. As unpleasant as it is, these people have to be countered, mainly because of their sheer lack of actual information. Ignorance and invective, evidently, can lead you to take the day off and cause you to make a spectacle of yourself in Washington, D.C.”

Five Things That Scare Me

Commented Oct 30, 2009 at 15:41:42 in Entertainment

“As a mom who is a veteran of the car-pool wait zone, I completely applaud you for your mention of this horrid phenomenon. Our school district curtailed bus service, which then necessitated picking up my children, since we lived 3 miles from school on a busy street. I HATED this. Every afternoon, at Niguel Middle School, in OC's Laguna Niguel, the moms in their Escalades, Suburbans, Hummers, etc., would be sitting there 20 minutes early with the motor running, radio and a/c in full use. In order to do a runaround on this, I tried arriving slightly later, which disturbed my kids to no end. I can't blame them for wanting to get the heck away from the school, but I was only trying to conserve not only energy but my time. The sense of entitlement that emanated from these parents was particularly repugnant. So the news is, you have to raise gas prices so high that it will affect this type of urban yuppie, or make it so socially unacceptable to drive a polluting behemoth that they will actually consider getting a smaller vehicle. But I wouldn't put my money on it.”

Aaror replied on Oct 30, 2009 at 16:32:26

“Don't worry too much, while "peak oil," is a myth, "peak cheap oil," is not.
Most of the sources of oil we will be using this century cost $50-60 per barrel to produce (compared to $8 per barrel that Saudi oil costs to produce), which means that gas prices will only go up.”

KatK replied on Oct 30, 2009 at 16:30:05

“As a freelance writer who lives next to an elementary school, I see the moms line up in their SUVs every day in front of my house, often to drive their kids only three or four blocks to go home. The moms always leave the engines running, even in the nicest weather. Of course, they all go to the health club and send the kids to soccer camp to get some exercise, but they wouldn't dream of walking a few blocks. And yeah, they claim to be environmentalists because they recycle a bottle once in awhile. No wonder our world is polluted and our kids are all fat.”

“Remind me again why Biden let the guy off at the confirmation hearings? He was clearly unqualified. Same with Spector. Anita Faye Hill is to be praised for coming forward and speaking out. I later met her and found her to be reserved and well-spoken. We now have a justice who has written less than any other justice in court history, and frequently appears disinterested and lacking in information regarding cases. Pity. We need individuals on the highest court who can engage us and remind us why our justice system has been respected the world over for hundreds of years. Instead, we must endure the weak link.”

“Seriously, where is the outrage. Where does the guy get these audiences to play to? How ridiculous can it get? The guy already said it himself: "Creepy." Then, evidently, CBS has an "agreement" with YouTube, so every time posts of his admission go up, they are taken down. How many of us have a captive audience to play to? When will he actually be man enough to come on out and face the REAL music, not the kind he can orchestrate? And where are these women - plese, speak out someone, or have they already been paid off or are they afraid for their jobs? There is a recession to think about. It's not ok for the guy to sleep with "women," (note the plural here); while getting married at the same time. I don't know who is watching this stuff, but it sure isn't me. There has to be some respect for and common support for fidelity in order for the bonds of marriage or commitment to mean anything. And evidently, to Dave, the word "commitment" has no meaning. The guy is a player, has tons of money, and has used women. End of story, please, I am asking the rest of you all, rent a movie or get a good book, just don't support him by watching the show.”

When one of the most amazing pieces of footage from these protests involves a woman expressing herself by the simple act of walking on a public street in a sleeveless black dress, as I saw on CNN, we need to take notice. Yes, clothing does matter.”
