Why This Progressive Is Sticking By the Tax on Insurance Companies
Commented Jan 08, 2010 at 14:10:31 in Politics
“My favorite euphemism from the article: "place sunshine on the process of pricing health insurance premiums."
Most Americans don't know how much medical care actually costs. (they should) Many with employer provided don't even know how much their insurance costs-- until they have to go on COBRA. (thety should)
However...
Since cadillac plans are taxed, employers will switch to lower cost plans, offering fewer benefits. Therefore, employees will be responsible for more of the cost of our care. By making us pay for more of our medical costs out of pocket, this will be the 'sunshine' that teaches us why insurance is so damn expensive.
Horrible idea.”

“Yes, your employer would immediately drop your coverage. You would have to go out into the open market, by yourself, and find a policy for yourself. Been to the doctor lately? Then you're premiums will now be higher, if the insurance company takes you at all.
Of course, I doubt that your company will make up the difference in your salary for taking away your health care. They'll just pocket the difference and the little bit you get from them to help pay your premiums is only a fraction of what the insurance will cost you..
Sounds like quite the plan.”

“I'm equally outraged.
But everyone, please remember, a mandate was ALWAYS part of the deal. The difference is that we would have had a CHOICE between being forced to buy private insurance (with subsidies based on our income so that we could supposedly afford it) or forced to buy a public option, that would hopefully be cheaper and give private insurance competition.
But we ALWAYS were going to be forced to buy insurance. Just like everyone is forced to have car insurance. It protects everyone.”

“I'm tired of comparing this to car insurance. It's not. I can choose not to have a car or drive. I can't choose not to get sick. If I choose to have a car, I am also making the choice to accept all the incidental costs that go along with it. While I can eat right, exercise and try to maintain my health, the fact is that it doesn't guarantee that something won't go wrong. What you seem to be saying is that as long as I choose to live I am going to be forced to buy health insurance. And where is the choice in this? I can choose to get insurance from company A who is going to charge me 20% of my income or company B who is going to charge me 22% of my income. On top of that, you're still going to have co-pays and things that aren't coverage. And how does mandating someone else to buy insurance protect you? The logic doesn't work. Having insurance is not the same as having health care coverage.”
brt929 replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 13:37:06
“Your car insurance carrier is far more regulated than health insurance carriers.
Your car insurance carrier can't raise rates without an okay from the state insurance commissioner. (Well in most states.)
That's not true about health and life products. These guys raise the rates at their own discretion.
If it passes with a mandate, it will actually do more harm than good.”
