Rachel Maddow, Frank Schaeffer Discuss The Latest In Thinly-Veiled Evangelical Christian Obama Death Threats

Commented Nov 18, 2009 at 19:56:08 in Politics

“Tell me....

What is the difference between a Muslim extremist who must kill the infidels and a Christian extremist who prays for the death of a man who has done nothing to defame demean or defile their religion and their god?

Answer....

Just as Muslim extremists pervert the Koran to their own evil purposes, so do these "Christians" pervert the meaning of the Bible or selectively use parts of it to justify their evil intentions.”

dwillisno1 replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 20:11:32

“There is no "selectively use parts of it" here. This is even beyond pervert the word. This is a plain fundamental action taking "God's own Word" and applying not to his enemies but to your own! To suggest that they know about whom the Psalmist is speaking is a form of Taking on the Prerogatives of God to your self.”

“Absolutely!

I bet you could google and get a half dozen conservative comments from the last few years where they come right out and say that we should save the time, effort and money of a trial for (fill in the blank "terrorist", "criminal", etc.) and just proceed right to the execution.

I have come to the conclusion that these Conservatives do NOT believe in the rule of law or the Constitution. They like to spout off in public about preserving the original intentions of the founding fathers, while brandishing their copy of the Constitution/Declaration. It's the same as when they like to (selectively) pull passages out of the Bible to bolster their position on the issues of the day.

But in reality, they only believe in the preservation of their status quo and positions of power for the white male rich ruling elite.”

The culture from whence America sprang: white men in knee pants & stockings & powdered wigs or ponytails, who ran plantations or large farms, and decided that negroes were only 3/5 of a person and women not a "person" at all.

That culture. And anyone who wants to update that to the 21st century or the reality of today's American population/complexion -- woe be unto them. This culture belongs to the white, moneyed, landed gentry and must forever stay that way.”

“As far as I recall, he was referencing Iraq when he said he would bring the troops home. When discussing Afghan. it was always my impression that he felt we needed to refocus on that fight.

My only hope is that there is a clear directive issued and clear timeline they have in mind, even if they don't publicize it to the American people for strategic reasons.

We have to finish the hunt for bin Laden. And we have to make sure -- to the best of our ability -- that the Pak. nukes are secure.”

“Since you mentioned that about Iraq, have our troops come home? It seems as though we are status quo there. We’re in a holding pattern. Continuous conflicts and wars has no time line, my friend. Another fact, first, we really can’t finish the hunt for Osama Bin Laden that was not really initiated, it was put on the back burner. The last administration had other glorious things on its mind. Their eyes were on a bigger prize (Iraq).

So now, they want to make sure that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are secure. How do they propose doing that? I guess the use of more bombing and killing of innocent people. Tomorrow what’s on the agenda, I guess we will find bigger and better things to do, like invading some other nation. We should take care of business at home, which is in shambles, before we gallivant off on some other flawed crusade.”

“Under Bush, the country suffered a net loss of private sector jobs of a little over 2 million.

What does that mean?

Just to keep up with population growth the economy has to create 200,000 new jobs each month, so if you create 0 jobs one month you are already 200k in the hole. Bush lost 2 million jobs when needed to create about 10 million.

So Obama has to not only create jobs for his time in office, but he has to make up all the ground Bush lost. The media has given Obama 6 months, and are blaming him for all the problems with economy Bush left him. No wonder Cheney didn't want to run for President.”

“I voted for Obama, and nobody hopes more than I that he lives up the aspirations that his supporters felt he stood for.

But c'mon! Actual achievements should occur BEFORE a prize of this magnitude is given. In a way, doesn't it belittle the winners of past awards that this is given for what is at present only a lot of inspiring and pretty words. Let's wait a few years and see if any of them were inspiring enough to translate into action.

If I were him, I would humbly decline the award and ask that it be given to somebody who has already made an impact in peoples lives.

Plus, this is only fodder for the conservative cannons and will incense them so much that it will add to their powers of NO NO A MILLION TIMES NO to whatever Obama is for.”

mairs replied on Oct 09, 2009 at 12:57:23

“Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said their choice could be seen as an early vote of confidence in Obama intended to build global support for his policies. They lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change.

"He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. "Some people say, and I understand it, isn't it premature? Too early? Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond – all of us."

After the prize was announced, Jagland compared the decision to give it to Obama to the prize was given to German Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1971 for his "Ostpolitik" policy of trying to find common ground with Eastern Europe, which was under Communist sway.

He said the same thing was true when then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev got the prize in 1990 after he had launched perestroika and glasnost, and allowed Eastern Europe to emerge from Kremlin control.”

jdiary replied on Oct 09, 2009 at 12:55:34

“This is a silly & thoughtless comment. I don't think you understand the focus of the Nobel committee and the point of the award. The reason they stated for awarding the prize to Obama was this:

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons."

-----------------------------------------------
This alone is a significant undertaking for Obama or anyone for that matter, especially given the geopolitical climate following the Bush administration. Al Gore has not reversed the effects of climate change yet his vision and his work thus far indicates that he's deserving of the prize. No one else sought and made significant strides in the direction of ridding the world of nuclear weapons Anyone who takes this on is more than deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize.”

That would give individuals a direct vote and make it almost impossible for the insurance industry to overwhelm the public good with cash like they do now.
