Sleep Challenge 2010: Women, It's Time to Sleep Our Way to the Top. Literally.
Commented Jan 04, 2010 at 09:34:29 in Living
“OK I'm a guy, but since moving to China, I have discovered what the people in the southern part have been doing forever, taking a nap. Every afternoon after lunch most of the people here take a half hour to one hour nap. The school day and work day all have long midday breaks for this purpose. I usually sleep for half and hour, but sometimes go longer. I feel much healthier and better for it.
I also have better sleep and more vivid, insightful dreams than I have ever had.
Women and men both should do what they can to reclaim their sleep. It's free, and it is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.”

“I live in China, and I was quite surprised that I lived in a place that's like Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union, places where most of the citizens suffered horrible lives. While not a perfect place by any means, this is hardly an accurate description. The author also gives no examples to back his accusation. It's a lot like a teabagger calling Obama a Nazi. It just isn't so.
Yes, the government is totalitarian, but the people enjoy a much improved life over the previous generation, and their prosperity is improving all the time. People here have a surprising amount of opportunity to improve their lives, and the vast majority that live in my city are upbeat and optimistic.
I think the author should come live here for a few months, rubbing elbows with the citizens before making wild, Cheney like accusations.”

“When the pigs jack your credit card rates up astronomically like they have been doing to nearly everyone lately, you can also opt to quit paying them. It will trash your credit, but what good has that been doing you lately? I saw my $10,000 balance at 6.9% leap to 21% even though I had always paid on time, and often huge chunks of it at a time. I had had this card for years. This made it impossible for me to pay down the principle, so after several stressful weeks I chose to let my credit rating go south and just quit paying. I guess drastic times call for drastic measures.”

As is $22,000 of furnishings, cars etc. etc. If your house is underwater, you might as well go for this.

“I learned many years ago while working for a large company that it wasn't the best and brightest that made it to the top. Instead the most predatory and cut throated @#%^&!@ became the ones who ran the company. The Bush White House is a classic example of this management structure. In our financial system there are some good number crunchers coming up with these schemes, but it takes a real rat to implement them.”

Paying for Our Wars

“Something not mentioned here is the fact that we have also had to contract out so many jobs that would have been done by military personnel in the past for a lot less money, including mechanics, drivers, cooks, security, etc.
Americans are so lame. They want everything without having to pay the price. If they want to fight a "War on terror" then they need to pay for it now, both in money and in bodies. These wasteful, stupid wars would not exist if we did this.”

Obama, Progressives and Afghanistan
Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 19:11:50 in Politics
“Obama is no progressive. Just because because the uber right media decry him as a commie socialist, does not make it so. If he was a progressive we would see Elizabeth Warren, Paul Krugman, and Robert Reich in charge of the economy instead of Summers, Geitner, and Bernanke. We would have seen a strong, clear stand early in the health care debate demanding a strong public option instead of back room meetings with insurance and pharmaceutical companies. We would also see a dismantling of our insane military industrial complex instead of an escalation of a hopeless war.”
FHTB replied on Dec 04, 2009 at 03:04:41
“Good points...n o one progressive would ever in their right mind see him as such...the right wingnuts can call him all the silly, idiotic names they like, but socialist will never be the right one. Obama does NOT have our back, and that has been made abundantly clear, over and over.”

I see now that I, along with millions of others were duped into thinking we had someone who actually wanted to make a difference and make a change. This war will be the final nail in the coffin for our country. While we are suffering at home from a shattered economy, bad health care, bad schools, bad infrastructure, and countless other ills and we borrow more money from China to go blindly into an unwinnable war. “We seem to be the only Nation on earth that seems to think fighting a war pays for itself. History is replete with National disaster with wars that bankrupt the countries involved.
I think the "national service" idea has hit it's time: enlist in the military or serve in the healthcare and needed national construction corps to create jobs that can only be done in America and the payment is entry into universal healthcare and higher education where outside the military, 1 year service = 1 year of educational tuition. I believe that National Service of some kind lets every person feel like part of the same country as well as learn how to work together to get something done regardless of individual beliefs or even political persuasions. We did this in the 1930's and into the 1940's and it worked. Now almost 80 years later, it is time again to focus on National projects such as bridge repair, wind, solar, and geothermal energy installations and switching more vehicles over to natural gas/LP as well as forcing our nominally American Oil and Gas industry to sell American oil and gas to Americans FIRST instead of open marketing, and then to quit whining about slow leases when they refuse to develop the ones they have already.”

“It's by design we don't have enough military personnel. We spend far more on these military contractors than our own military. Why? Because the powers that be have a corporate interest in this gaming ... follow the money trail.
Our country is run by multi-national corporations that have their greenbacks well secured in the deep pockets of our elected officials - both parties. From the military complex (Halliburton) to the banks (Goldman Sachs, AIG) healthcare (any large insurance company to Big Pharma) to our food industry (Monsanto) ... this is a takeover that has occurred before our very eyes, and it threads itself into every aspect of our personal lives. Think about it.
It's time to go back to our communities of friends and relatives and begin to take care of each other. Someone has land for food growth, then that's their contribution. Someone has a medical background, then that's their contribution. Of course money still needs to be made as that is our current means by which to make things happen ... however, creativity and a union with those we love and care about can mean sustainability.”

Dems need to boot out the paid for corporatists, hiding under the guise of being Democrats and replace them with strong people who will advocate for the American people. Dennis K., Bernie S., Alan G. to name a few come to mind. If the current administration continues on this path, then they will be gone in '10 and '12 and they will have only themselves to blame. “We still have Biden, whose strategy on Afghanistan is IMHO (and many many others) the right one. What is frustrating is that we've lost him as a powerful force in the Senate. Not only should he be leading the Senate, not Reid, and one of the few with straight-forward honesty and b@lls to get it done, but he is exceptional with negotiating with former fellow Senators and effectively strong-arming peers.
With Joe as VP, his hands are tied with approaching the Senate, and he has a strong loyalty to the president (Biden is known for his loyaly to the president and this nation). Thus Joe has continued to push his idea for correct strategy for Afghanistan, which Obama asks for, but in the end Biden will, as VP, back the president.
As Senator he was able to be a heavy hitter as a separate entity. We never know, maybe at the last minute Obama will embrace Biden's strategy and tell Clinton and McChrystal to p__ss off. I've seen this said by several other commenters on HP, but at this point, Biden is the only person in Washington I like right now and I hope he doesn't go anywhere. Fingers crossed for Tuesday.”
