President Obama and Gay Rights: Forgetting the Lessons of the Campaign
Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 02:48:43 in Politics
“I think that Candidate Obama would be calling President Obama someone practicing "the same old politics." I think he would be ashamed, disheartened, and hopeless, just as I, a supporter of Candidate Obama, feel. I was in tears when he won, and now a year later, they still flow, but their impetus has changed. Obama, just do what's right! Not what's liberal or conservative. Make it happen.
Candidate Obama promised us the world, and could deliver.
President Obama reneges on yesterday's word, and delivers only blandness.
Come out of this funk Obama! Remind me why I pulled that lever!”

“if you don't know then nothing he does will help you. Perhaps you should read the WSJ and the assessment they published last week. The one that said that while the GOP fought health care the President was quietly rolling up win after win after win on social issues that have haunted the dems for decades. For example, the President using I believe the antiquities act, made 1.25 million acres of Wyoming that was going to be denuded and strip-mined a nation part. Just reached out and stop the destruction of 1.25 million acres but that sounds a lot like the politics as usual person you describe right... the hate crimes legislation that has been on someones shelf for 2 decades, how do you think that passed? By accident? Ariana wants you to think that there is a split because it is good for business. Give me a break.

“Because no everyone would have seen, or even heard about them. The Japanese government controlled all forms of communication, much like today's MSM does, and far Left Fascists in Congress want to do, now. However - a study was done, in the late 1940's, the Joint Strategic Bombing Survey I think it was called, that discovered that the entire economy of wartime Japan could have been brought to a screaming halt if 50 - yes, 50 - truly strategic targets had been hit; and the war in the air over Germany won much sooner if the ONLY plant in the country producing the additive that allowed the production of high-octane gasoline had been destroyed. "The fog of war", eh?”

“If I were a Marine being sent to Japan for invasion, there is no doubt in my mind that I would wish for the dropping of those bombs. More, if thats what it took. Those people are NOT my friends, and much closer to being my enemy. Hell, those bombs could save my life! (And did for many, american and japanese alike).
But does that make it just? Why is morality assumed, simply because my life is saved?
The Japanese military tortured US soldiers, committed unspeakable acts, and attacked pearl harbor unprovoked. Does this build us a pedestal of morality as well?
But then, is dropping the bomb so different from invading Japan, lining up tens of thousands in Hiroshima, and shooting them in the back of the head, other than keeping American lives out of harms way?
I have a feeling that our view on this issue arises from two different points of view:
Do you believe the life of an American is more valuable, more worth protecting, than that of a Japanese person?”

“Answers:
Did it make it just? YES
Did this build us a pedestal of morality? NO but we finished the job with brutal efficiency and delivered a moral and just peace. Both Japan and Germany are now model citizens of the world.
Is an American life more valuable? In the context of the time, WWII, ABSOLUTELY YES!!!! War was declared on us. We didn't have to justify our self defense. We set unconditional surrender of the Axis as our goal and attained it.
Note: War is absolutely an immoral act. And in an total war, like WWII, arguing morality while the other guy conducting wholesale annilihation is like leading sheep to the slaughter. In WWII, it was a fight to the end. Let's be grateful that our grandparents saw it to completion. Those in the current generations don't have an appreciation for the sacrifices made by those greater than us. We stand on the shoulders of giants. We'll not likely see the likes of GI Joe and Rosie the Riveter again ... or the leaders we had at that time”

“Absolutely, unequivocally, YES!!! In a combat situation (and I am the veteran of several) you must decide whose life is more important, the lives of you and your friends, or the lives of the guys shooting at you. If you have trouble answering that question, your wires are seriously crossed up.
We didn't start that war, and the situation dictated drastic measures be taken to bring the conflict to a close. The first rule in war is to win, all else is secondary.”

“You seem to feel very strongly, and it seems because you were personally affected. I have to wonder, however, if the japanese people were responsible for the pearl harbor attacks, rather than the japanese government. I also wonder if perhaps there are those in Japan who have very good and just reasons why those bombs shouldn't have been dropped since they were personally affected.
Many, many innocent people died. We warned them (or the government, at least), they called "Bullsh*t" (twice), but I have to say, it surprises me that we dropped those bombs.
I am only 19, so I admit experiential inferiority, but I can't imagine a situation that would warrant that magnitude of killing, including WWII Japanese POW camps.”

“Being a pretty liberal thinker, I like to see conservative ideas and ideologies that I disagree with discredited, but based on their merit. I'll admit, their is a certain desire to turn a bad situation into evidence for why conservative ideologies are far from beneficial, but I find a deep and burning hatred for when the right does the same thing (to a greater magnitude, in my opinion) to the left.
My point is, I agree with gino618 in the sense that this guy was a nut, a white supremacist nut, but doesn't represent an accurate sampling of the republican base, by any means. Racism, maybe. Ignorance, almost certainly. But murderous? I'm going to give my fellow Americans the benefit of the doubt on that one.
