Why Sotomayor's Confirmation Debate Is the D.C. Equivalent of Rock of Love

Freesia2 replied on May 29, 2009 at 14:23:07

“A reality show. About something totally unreal. Do you remember that band Poison from the 80's? The leader singer, Bret Michaels, that Steven Tyler of Aerosmith pinned the song about "Dude Looks Like A Lady" because of his beautiful blonde tresses? Well anyway, Bret Michaels who's now really beautiful hair challenged goes on the show in his little bandana and a bunch of beauties fight over him. He gets to choose which one is worthy of his love.;-)

Or something like that. I made it through 10 minutes once but couldn't stop laughing so I wasn't really feelin' the love. .”

Nixon.”

“Exactly.

This article is simply by a Nixon apologist.

The reality is that Nixon committed all those crimes and more. If you are right-wing, you love him. Otherwise you know that we had a criminal for a president.

It is sad that everyone thinks the Watergate scandal was just about a hotel break-in and some tapes. There is barely a mention of illegal funneling of money to foreign accounts and the fighting of secret wars.”

I don't trust her regarding her sentiment on muslims however. And I believe she has a VERY short threshold and what constitutes a good culture and a bad one, obviously.”

“Sigh... the only bad thing about an Obama presidency (as I'm deciphering so far) is that all us colored folk are going to be on hyper alert to not stoke the increasing resentment of racist right. I could sneeze and piss someone off, I'm starting to believe.”

Halfandhalf replied on Oct 24, 2008 at 13:02:53

“It's crazy that you have to feel this way, and deeply sad for this country! I'm so sorry to hear it. Over here in Southern CA, I've feeling the opposite effect for the past few weeks, a true sea change in consciousness, more people genuinely finding ways to be kinder and friendlier to everyone without regard for skin color. I can't prove it, of course, but I have the feeling that if you sneezed here in the cafe where I"m sitting right now, three people would say "Bless you" without even looking up to check you out. I hope the feeling you have passes after the election, although I can't say I'm as optimistic about other parts of the country as I am about blue coastal CA. I'm anticipating racial outbursts after an Obama win, but I'm also expecting more people of every color to stand up against it, in every possible way.”

“Seriously. We should leave her church alone. The real issue is what she takes from that and applies to policy... which is a lot! But as a hobbyist anthropologist here, I believe it's unfair to paint these churches with such a broad "scary" paintbrush. There are dangerous social elements here within these religious constructs but there's also a lot there that should be understood beyond just watching this video and videos like this. It's lazy. Seriously.”

If that's the case I'll go with what I do know about her church. And what I do know, I don't care for.”

John McCain Plays the Race Card

Commented Jul 31, 2008 at 12:42:46 in Politics

“That's what I'm saying.

I don't understand why it's automatically racist when any black man is depicted as being a few feet away from a white woman. Are people really that nervous about this?”

Choicelady replied on Jul 31, 2008 at 14:15:16

“Apparently...watch people's reactions to that. Racial nervousness about Black men and white women is NOT gone. That is why this ad has a creepy, racial tinge to it. Yes it proposes Obama is a bimbo; but yes, it's the approximation of him with two blondes that carries a subliminal message. Those who don't get it probably don't because they have kind minds and don't think like that. Does not mean it's a wrong interpretation.”

Jerry Falwell was among white segregationists who spoke out forcefully against mixed-race unions, describing the practice as a Communist plot to destroy white America. Yet Jerry Falwell continued to be an evangelical leader and conservative icon until his death in 2007.

It's a generational thing. Yes, it is the old charge of a black man (seeing romantically) a white woman that was frequently the "justifiable" rationale used by good ole' boys in the South for lynching black men who "didn't know their place" and were being "uppity n-words."
