North Dakota Is Now The Only State With An Unchallenged Gay Marriage Ban

Commented May 23, 2014 at 11:46:04 in Politics

“The Supreme Court has already struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and California Prop 8. So, it seems highly unlikely they would turn around and rule gay marriage unconstitutional.”

“I'm sure all the conservative taxpayers across the country are thrilled that their tax money is to line the pockets of lawyers hired to defend their states' ill-conceived bans on same-sex marriage. Perhaps they should send an invoice to the Mormon Church, the Family Research Council, and the other religious groups that lobbied so heavily to put these hateful bans in place.”

Karl Rove Suggests Hillary Clinton May Have Brain Damage

Commented May 13, 2014 at 10:17:05 in Politics

“Dear Mr. Rove,

You and the other Republicans need to stop trashing Hillary. Her getting the nom is the best-case scenario for you. Of all foreseeable Dem competitors, she has by far the most salients upon which to mount an attack. And even if you fail to beat her in the general election (by nominating a far-right ideologue, for instance), she will be the next best thing to a Republican of any possible Democrat. Banks, big media, insurance companies, and the top 1% will still get plenty of care and feeding in a Clinton administration. To prove she is as macho as any man, she will be getting us into as many foreign military disasters as possible, which will mollify the military-industrial complex. To prove she is tough on crime, she will deport more Mexicans, build a higher wall on the border, and double down on the Drug War. That will keep her in good stead with the law enforcement-corrections industry complex. Yes, she is pro-choice, but in truth, no pragmatic Republican really wants Roe v. Wade repealed, which is likely to result in a massive grassroots backlash that will sweep your party from power in the next election.

So, Mr. Rove, you need not fear Hillary. Here's whom you need to fear: Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

You're welcome.”

“Political discourse is so polarized and extreme, that I suspect there are few swing voters to woo with nuanced, middle-of-the-road positions. I think the key to winning is getting one's base to the polls. Accordingly, I think the Dems are playing this game ineptly. They should be raising the rafters and getting the base riled up, but they are not. Here in Texas, Wendy Davis and the Dems have a perfect hammer to hit the Republicans over the head with: the denial of Medicaid expansion to poor Texans, and the refusal to accept the corresponding Federal tax dollars _paid by Texans_ back into the state. On that one issue, the GOP can be portrayed as lacking compassion, financial responsibility, and basic business sense. But we have heard nothing from the Dems about this. If they are similarly pusillanimous nationwide, we are in for a long, intolerable interval of Republcan rule in this country, the changing demographics notwithstanding.”

“Correlation studies tell us very little. It may be that the product line itself generates such demand that it overcomes the negative effects of rude salespeople. The only way to test this hypothesis is to set up stores in different neighborhoods, selling the same line of products, where salespeople are trained to follow "rude" and "helpful" scripts. You randomly have the salespeople switch scripts, and after several months, you may be able to draw a valid conclusion. I suspect that no one will expend the resources to do such a proper study, and we we be back to speculation based in worthless, potentially misleading studies like this one.”

Commented Apr 30, 2014 at 11:14:04 in Healthy Living

“Regarding the value of HPV vaccination, preventing cancer is just the tip of the iceberg. For every cancer case prevented, there are dozens to hundreds of cases of expense, inconvenience, discomfort, and side effects involved in management of abnormal Pap smear results. Such management includes repeat Paps, colposcopies, biopsies, LEEPs, and cold-knife conizations. Even after successful treatment, the woman has to be followed for years. Often the disease recurs, and she has to go through all that again. I am pathologist who looks at thousands of abnormal Paps and cervical biopsies every year, and I am tried of seeing so many cases of this preventable disease. Please, please, please get your children vaccinated!”

momgrandmother on May 2, 2014 at 17:06:36

“They still need PAP smears every year because the vaccine doesn't cover all the cancer causing viruses. The only sure prevention is monogamy.”

“Thank you! And as someone who has had an abnormal pap, I am very much pro-vaccine. I am over 26, but if I were younger, I would be knocking down the door to my OB-GYN to get this. If it was available when I was younger, I would have totally gotten it. The saying of "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" keeps repeating in my head, because it's true!”

I could be simply "sexual assault," assuming the prosecution proves that the act was done without the complainant's consent. Since that may be difficult to prove beyond reasonable doubt, the charge with the best chance of sticking is the one that was made: improper relationship between educator and student. OTOH, I'm not a lawyer, so ignore my comment with impunity.”

“It seems to me that the preferred sequence of events would be 1) thorough investigation, followed by 2) discipline and/or criminal charges. The president is throwing around the "murder" label before getting all the facts. Meanwhile, the families of the missing and dead passengers are literally screaming bloody murder and demanding retribution, again without the benefit of a thorough investigation. The families of the MH 370 passengers have exhibited similar behavior. The more I learn of east Asian culture, the less concerned I am about any threat they pose in the international marketplace. If you can't keep your cool, you make bad decisions, and they are certainly not keeping their cool.”

“From the standpoint of child-rearing, my concern is not the ready availability of porn on the Internet but the dearth of visual depictions of how a loving couple actually has sex in the real world. Kids get to a certain age at which their curiosity about sex is undeniable, so they are going to find porn no matter what measures their parents put in their way. It would be great if they got accurate information rather than a fetish-drenched caricature of what sex is like for most people.”

'Sundays Are The Worst' Website Urges Christians To Tip Better

Commented Mar 11, 2014 at 10:09:07 in Religion

“This should not be construed as an apologia for Christians, but there was some unconscionable cherrypicking in this article. From the original paper at the supplied link:

"Our analyses also found that older people, Whites, unmarried people, higher
income people, and residents of the Northeast all tip more than their counterparts (see Tables 6 and 7). The effects of age, race and income replicate previous findings (see Lynn and Thomas-Haysbert, 2003; Lynn 2009) and the finding about region of residence compliments a previous research finding that residents of the Northeast have the greatest familiarity with the restaurant tipping norm (see Lynn, 2006)."

So, there were all those other factors correlated with tipping, but the author chose to single out Christians. Sorry, but with that kind of reporting, you're no better than Fox News.”

lizt on Mar 11, 2014 at 10:47:00

“Actually it's not cherry picking at all. The main topic of the article is about a website started by a pastor. It's natural to use the information that is relevant in that context. If the article had been about which people are the worst tippers then it would have been relevant to include the information you provided.”
