“What exactly did 'change' mean to you, when he said it?”

KYlawyer replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 14:15:21

“Exactly what he said, "change we can believe in." To me that meant realistic change to turn the ship I mentioned above around 180 degrees to the right course. But like I said , you can't turn it around on a dime. It took Lincoln years to win the Civil War and bring and end to outright slavery. It took MLK years to finalize that process with Civil Rights. It took years to solve the 1930's depression and win WW2.

I agree that it seems he has helped the fat cats at the expense of main street. But remember, the GOP left a colossal mess. In the midst of a recession and on the brink of a collapse that would have made the depression look tame. Unfortunately, because of years of Wall Street power they had the nation by the jugular.

Obama had to act in accordance with necessary, pragmatic action to stave off an unrecoverable situation. I don't think enough other progressives realize how much he had to overcome just to get done what he has. Even then it's been knock down fight with the agents of the old regime.

What good would have done anyone for Obama to have come into office demanding single payer, and a bunch of other stuff he could not hope to deliver. Changing course is always going against momentum and it will take time and Obama is our best bet.

Would you really rather have the GOP in control in 2011?”

Luschnig replied on Dec 22, 2009 at 14:00:53

“In campaigns "change" means the candidate is not the incumbent. Practically every candidate, right, left and center runs as an agent of 'change'. The electorate freely interprets what 'change' means to them. In the case of Barack Obama the Naderite fringe thought that an African American had to mean revolutionary upheaval. On the other hand the teabag reactionaries interpreted Obama's 'change' as a Marxist Mau-Mau uprising aimed at the throats of the white folk. Fortunately, both are wrong. Obama represents someone closer to FDR than to JFK. People without history have forgotten that FDR was as much despised by the Left of his day as he was by the Republicans. Furthermore, Roosevelt was a velvet tongue orator who despite his other accomplishments utterly failed to get universal health care or racial equality instituted in America.”
