The Cranberry Sauce Controversy

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 16:01:08 in Living

“I love both cooked, whole cranberry sauce and raw cranberry "relish," so I don't think I'm helping you much with your poll, LOL. I'm not really fond of the canned jelly that I grew up eating, but I'll put a slice of it on a sandwich in a pinch. All the same Maria, your recipe sounds easy and tasty. I think I'll give it a try.”

Americans Are Still Delusional About House Prices

Commented Oct 12, 2009 at 15:03:23 in Business

“scrooge mc duck here. we are cheap, cheap, cheap. we don't use credit cards. we paid for used cars in cash- so no car notes. we have a relatively low mortgage, so renting wouldn't save us much, if anything. (although home maintenance and utilities do add up.) we don't pay for cable. and all of this was from BEFORE my DH lost his job. we are on the run quite a bit, so probably the only area we could cut costs in would be in what we spend eating out. however, since we are a vegetarian family, even eating out doesn't cost us what it might cost some other families of 4. However, if I could get my tots to eat sandwiches, we'd be set, LOL!”

Meet Quorn: This Fungus Ain't No Portobello

Commented Sep 20, 2009 at 02:12:26 in Living

“you say you wondered what Quorn was made of??? The ingredients are listed on the box. You could have done an internet search for mycoprotein or mycofungus, and learned a lot about it when you first purchased it. I did that the very first time quorn came out, because I had never heard of a mycoprotein. I found enough info to satisfy my curiosity. true, the info on allergies came out later. However, the info has been out there, and none of it is hidden. JMO, as a consumer.”

Meet Quorn: This Fungus Ain't No Portobello

Commented Sep 20, 2009 at 00:01:03 in Living

“yup...another quorn fan. and i'm just a regular stay-at-home mom who posts on huffpo a lot, so I don't know why you think everybody who's posting is a part of some company conspiracy. The stuff has been sold at health food stores for years, so I guess millions have tasted it by now. dnietz, do you think we'd all be silent on this issue?

but anyway... i'm not sure what to make of this article. my husband is allergic to some nuts & coconuts. my daughter is allergic to tree nuts & peanuts. I'm allergic to shell fish. if some people are allergic to quorn, then what's shocking about that? and as for the "frankenfood" aspect: as long as I've ever seen quorn, on the side of the box it said it was a type of mycofungus. I remember looking up mycofungus, and deciding even though it was some kind of engineered food, I was gonna give it a try. (sorry, but I've also tried nutrasweet , splenda, & some new medicines like vioxx. call me "stupid," but it's not illegal to try things cooked up in a scientist's lab.) The quorn allergy issue is old news to people who pay attention to these things. I'm just not sure why some people being allergic to anything is a reason for all people to worry. People have allergies to trees. That doesn't mean we should stop planting them.”

White Supremacists Need Health Care, Too

Commented Sep 16, 2009 at 03:26:47 in Living

“People with these types of political beliefs have been voting against their own self-interests for decades. I don't know why they are so confused. So many of these people are white and poor or working class, yet they side with "Big Business" every time. Chris Rock said it best-- if given the choice between being a black millionaire like himself, or being poor and white with one leg, they'd say they would choose to ride this one-legged thing out.”

The Secret To Happiness: Don't Care!

Commented Jul 13, 2009 at 07:43:53 in Living

“i think you have to take this in the right spirit. certainly, there are people who don't care about what they do as it effects others. they step on your toes and keep going. that's not the secret to happiness; that's the secret to meanness, and the people who do things like this always seem fairly unhappy, if you ask me. all the same, i don't think the author meant not to care about hurting others. i think she means give up the attachment to all the little hobgoblins going around in your mind that don't make a real difference. for example: someone asked me why my neighbor's fancy car was no longer around. did they default on their lease? i replied, i don't know and i don't care. i never pay attention to my neighbors car, what it is, or whether it is here or there, nevertheless speculate on why it is there or not there. and you know what? i know that i'm happier because i don't care about what "The Jones" have, lol.”

Declare Your Food Independence

Commented Jul 04, 2009 at 08:23:22 in Green

“thanks for saying this. I had to share it with my friends. it's really time for all of us to declare some food independence- even me. I've been a vegetarian for 25 years, but even I need to step away from the corn syrup and fast food selections. "Not having enough time to make a healthy meal" just ran out of time as an excuse, in my book.”

hp blogger Sarah Newman replied on Jul 06, 2009 at 21:29:05

“Yes, I think most of us have gotten caught up in our 24/7 lifestyle which often doesn't leave enough time for cooking. I'm glad to learn that you've been a vegetarian for so many years!”

Like Big Tobacco, Big Porn Peddles Poison to Children

Commented Jun 26, 2009 at 19:06:21 in Politics

“Oh, come on.......porn is not some type of "good, clean fun." Teaching kids that sex is healthy, wholesome and normal is not the answer to demystifying the freak show that is the porn industry. If adults want to wile away their lives sitting glued to the internet searching for this stuff, then so be it. But let's not pretend that porn ought to be the stuff of childhood, and that it wouldn't have a negative effect on kids if kids realized sex is healthy and natural. Kids imitate this garbage, and the stuff that is seen in most porn is simply not comprised of any helpful information children ought to have about sex.”

Gidster replied on Jun 27, 2009 at 13:09:29

“I agree with that.

I did not intimate that kids should be given porn as teaching tools.

Porn is an adults only thing. What I am saying is that teens, having no information/education/candid conversation available to them learn about sex through porn and peers.”

Malkin71 replied on Jun 27, 2009 at 08:35:39

“WHO SAID PORN "ought to be the stuff of childhood"????????????

No one has ever said that, ______. What we said was the govt. shouldn't be in the censorship business.

If you want to keep porn away from your kids, do so.

What if I don't want my kids raised on the lies of religion? What if I don't want them corrupted by, say, Christianity....should we try to ban all churches?”

But somehow, the signal is still bleeding into our house?!?!? I don't know what we'll have to do. We may have to simply unplug the t.v.s We want to keep them so that we can still watch videos. But I don't appreciate the fact that we are still getting television in our house. Sigh. Buck up, Mr. Harber. We mostly ditched all television months ago for our kid's sake. Now we read, use the internet and talk to each other instead of watching t.v. Give it a try-- you'll like it!”

Commented Jun 13, 2009 at 21:39:45 in Politics

“.........Get real (Or get honest.) If you think Wright was saying these types of things from the pulpit every Sunday, don't you think Fox News would have had more clips to show???? Churches like his tape the sermon's every Sunday and sell the tapes. Audio tapes, video tapes, dvds.....the evidence would be out there if there was any evidence that he was tearing Jews apart in public every Sunday morning.”

Nommo replied on Jun 14, 2009 at 17:43:15

“There's nothing there. It is just another attempt to divert from real issues. In the time since this brouhaha began, a thousand ugly remarks have been spewed on right wing radio in their constant demeaning of Black people, and anyone else that does not fit the oh so put upon white male mode.

Amazing how a Black man can make them toss all perspective out the window.”
