“there are 33 states in our union in which it is legal for first cousins to marry. the marriage is considered valid even if they move to a different state. it's a basic right granted in our constition because of our constitution, the 'full faith and credit' clause of article IV.”

“it looks a lot less like waffling than serious thought and contemplation on mission, strategy (most notably exit strategy). i would much rather have a president who can readily admit an error and correct it than what we have seen in the past.”

“have you looked at today's news? things seem to be progressing quite well i would argue in terms of health care, revisiting the patriot act, rethinking afghanistan mission. . . truly, what more do you desire in 10 months of service.
as for family trips (a red herring issue, for sure) other than the normal presidential vacation time in august what are you griping about? his family did accompany him on some foreign head of state travel, which is usual and customary.
what is it that you contend could be done differently, right now?”

“fauxmccoy,
I agree with you completely.
It's time for people to turn off the talking heads and visit the White House website for factual information regarding the President's agenda, accomplishments thus far and future tasks. I visit the website at least once a week and spend no less than an hour reading material on what's really going on.”

like waves, upon a grainy sea.
marching to the drum that only i do hear
gasping feverishly, breathless in fear
mountains of majesty, pitching to and fro,
pulsing, as the ocean's ebb and flow.
filling my bosom with righteousness
with passion unpure, i must confess,
overcome with what i ought not nor should
i will crown thy good with brotherhood!
oh, gosh, sorry -- was just looking at victoria's secrets online and then found your most inspiring article and guess i got swept away for a moment.
the end result being auto-erotic patriotic poetry. truly awesome, man. thank you.”

“thank you for speaking to this issue, i can relate. i'm a 44 year old woman whose mother is from atlanta and father is from utah. i was born in california and have lived here all my life feeling comfortable in our very diverse culture. i was aware of overt forms of racism and was taught that it was wrong. in my 20s, i took a womens studies class that covered the topic in detail and it opened my mind. having been born into a white, upper middle class, the concept of 'white privilege' escaped me. i did not realize the doors that opened to me by the mere fact of my whiteness. i learned some of the more subtle forms of racist attitudes that were practiced by my folks which i do not want to emulate, much less teach to my children.
i continued my education as an adult, majoring in anthropology (where one really must divorce oneself of prejudgment in order to succeed) and minored in spanish and california studies. i'm grateful for that experience, it gave me the knowledge, strength and courage to speak out (obviously).”

“while there may be some prejudice along the lines you suggest, it hardly relates to the topic at hand. i would argue just as strongly against racism of any kind, but what you are describing is more of an issue of prejudice.
racism towards blacks has been institutionalized in this nation before it's inception; this is what we are confronting right now because it undermines our president and must be stopped.
the difference between pregudice and racism is a question of power (a conglomeration of wealth and influence).
i will agree with you that we must confront this ugliness whenever the opportunity presents itself and i too think ridicule is a perfect tool for doing just that.”

“The defensiveness implicit of having to say, every time racism is discussed, "Blacks are racist too," is a good indication of just how racist we are, as a culture. Whether or not a black person is prejudiced against white people doesn't not negate the racism directed at the president. It's not a "one cancels the other out" kind of situation.”

“i must disagree most forcefully. if you look at those who are protesting obama's policies, do you not think that many of them lurk around the poverty level themselves? the obama family had through education and hard work what anyone would call a rather comfortable existence prior to entering the white house.
the obama's income and assets undoubtedly exceeds the majority of those protesting against him (which is different than those who are clearly objecting to policy).”

“i am sure that there are many conservative leaders who are not racist. why does not one of them dare to speak up about it? of course they could have fears of disturbing their 'base' (which they of course *are*), but still, what is wrong with these people? of course it is difficult for a black conservative to speak up and i'm sure that most would not want to, just as obmam does not want to make it an issue. at the very least though, wouldn't you think that the jewish conservatives would have the depth of understanding to speak on this issue?”

“big difference being that bush EARNED disrespect. i supported him after 9/11 and the beginning of the afghanistan war in spite of my disagreement with his policies. his incompetence with that war faulty intelligence, unprovoked wars, and all around corruption (financial collapse due to lack of oversight and regulation) earned disrespect from the majority of americans. his approval rate at the end of his term demonstrates as much.
obama, most will admit inherited a fiasco -- financial meltdown, global wars, international mistrust and a failing health care system. he is working hard to correct these issues along with pushing the agenda he campaigned u[on. is everyone thrilled with every decision? of course not, even his supporters. regardless, the office of the president deserves respect and i pity the children whose parents don't teach that.
not once was bush heckled during a joint sessions speech (boos and hissing are the opposite of clapping, not heckling as some would assert). bush's family was not ever compared to other primates nor did people make snide comments about his family when they traveled with him abroad. it is the method that one uses to show disapproval that demonstrates both implicitly and all too often overtly a racist undertone.
no sane person would assert that disapproval of obama's policy equals racism. i have not seen that argument made by any liberal. i do however see many on the right making this faulty leap in logic, which only begs me to question their intentions.”

“thank you for your contribution. it gladdens me to see you do something so worthwhile with your va benefits. my husband and brother served in the army. husband had it pretty easy being stationed in hawaii and working in north korean intelligence. although he spent time at the dmz (which had a profound effect upon him) it pales in comparison to my brothers experience in the 10th mountain division and being deployed to haiti and somalia. the cute younger brother i sent off came home a very different person. to this day, i see him jump at the sound of fireworks and i saw him awake with a start, literally try to grab his non-existent rifle on y2k when local yokels thought that shooting their guns into the air was a great idea.
my family has been devastated by my own battles with cancer (twice) and the last one bankrupted us and left me disabled. i fight every day so this reality does not befall others. i pray for the day when we can use those va benefits to buy a home for our family, but it feels elusive at the moment.
bless you for serving this country, i honor you and what you are doing with your life. i can imagine there will be some very lucky young civics students in the near future (and lord knows, this country needs to be more informed on that score). you da man, man!”

“the racist core of our society tends to side with whatever party is courting them. in the sixties, these were the 'dixiecrats'. as nixon came along with his 'southern strategy' to woo the dixiecrats into the republican party, the demographic changed. it matters not what letter (r or d) comes after a persons name -- racism is alive and well and should be called out regardless of where it is found.

“second that - it has to do with our power to initiate legislation (not necessarily a bad thing) but is often misguided -- hence the devastating effects of prop 13 are creating budget nightmares from a voter initiative in 1978 that capped property tax values. another important factor is the voter initiative which requires a super-majority to pass state legislation, ultimately giving governing power to the minority party.
