“The mistake that Reagan made was granting amnesty to the illegal aliens, That act brought a flood of illegal immigrants willing to work for less than half the going wage in the factories and construction sites that many in the middle class relied upon to provide their middle class lifestyle. So with the illegals driving down the wages, the middle class suffered. The government loved the fact that they got withholding taxes with no future liabilities. Unethical businesses loved the cheap labor. But who really suffered. The working men and women. I know trades people that are earning the same wages today that they were earning back in the 80's. And I am not talking about after inflation is figured in. So go ahead, push for a comprehensive immigration plan, grant amnesty to an additional 20 million illegal aliens and see how much closer you can drive the middle class to third world status. Oh by the way, if you do grant them amnesty, do you really think they are going to still work in the fields picking your vegetables? Sorry, they are not all uneducated. They are coming after your job next.”

“Keep driving and talking - you cannot be concentrating on both so I sure as sh*t hope it's yourself you kill and not someone I love. Air conditioning controls and radio do not require concentration or response. Get real. Apparently the word "concentration" is not fully understood by people who think it's okay to drive and talk on a phone. The human brain is not capable of concentrating on two things at the same time. Can't be done.
Books on tape? Not while driving. Kids fussing etc? Pull over, stop and do not progress until they are quiet. They hate that, it works. Unrestrained pets? and that interferes with driving, how?
No, you have no point. Talking, texting, listening to tapes, watching TV should not be done at the same time as driving a car and the next a**hole that shoves me off the road while talking on their phone is going to get a very unpleasant surprise. Be sure it isn't you. Unless you're a policeman, fireman, or EMT, there is NO excuse for doing anything except paying attention when driving a vehicle.”

“"The human brain is not capable of concentrating on two things at the same time. Can't be done."
Wow, really? You cannot be serious. That comment alone probably nullifies everything you just stated. Tell that to the average singer/musician who is playing an instrument while singing a tune. The human mind is capable of things clearly beyond your grasp. What you should grasp is that the human mind is never fully concentrating on any one thing at any one time, especially while driving, if your definition of concentration means complete and undivided attention on the task of driving.
What I recommend is you avert your apparent rage towards something more constructive than trying to wish ill will to those who are operating within the bounds of the law and talking to someone on a cellular phone hands free. I abhor texting/dialing while driving just like the next guy and I can rage against them all day long. The fact of the matter is that people who take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel to do ANYTHING are putting more than him or herself at risk. The goal is to make something unavoidable safer for everyone.
And I know of someone who rammed into a barricade on an interstate because her Jack Russell terrier freaked out and jumped into her lap int he front seat.”

“"Hands off" talking on a cell phone is nearly as dangerous as holding it in the hand as it's the CONCENTRATION factor that matters, although using only one hand to drive adds a lot to the stupidity of using a phone while driving anyway. There is nothing on earth worth risking lives to talk on a phone in the car, nothing.
Here's a question, when at home, does talking to someone in the room take the same amount of concentration as a cell phone conversation? That should take care of the canard about conversation in a car - that's assuming normal conversation, not giggling, gesturing and turning around to address people in the back seat - teenage behavior that at least helps with population control.”

“While you make a valid point about using technology to reduce our use of technology, I can't agree with you that software like ZoomSafer is needless. ZoomSafer exists to help people make smarter decisions when using their cell phones in cars. As Fcsakes points out, using your mobile phone hands-free might not be significantly safer than using a handheld device. Maybe the only truly safe way to deal with your mobile phone in a car is to lock it in your trunk - but what if you need to make an emergency call?
That's where ZoomSafer comes in. ZoomSafer uses GPS to detect when you're driving and automatically engages, locking your keypad so you cannot text or type. It also suppresses incoming calls and message alerts, so you can keep your focus on the road. ZoomSafer is fully customizable, so you can opt to receive certain calls using one-touch answering. You can also make outbound calls using voice dialing. Try it for free at www.zoomsafer.com.
Hands-free technology alone is not enough to get people to put down the phone and keep their hands on the wheel. ZoomSafer is hardly a needless technology if it succeeds in helping even one person break the distracted driving habit.”

“I presume your question meant a cell phone conversation in a car vs. phone conversations at home. Either way, it really depends on the circumstances. For instance, when I take long drives up and down I-95 (DC to NY and back), I tend to have hands-free phone conversations with friends and family with no significant impact to my attention. It's an opportune time to catch up with people while keeping me from being bored to tears on solo trips. I'm still quite aware of my surroundings, slow down when I see speed traps and avoid obstacles in the same way as I would if I were blasting my stereo singing along to Bat for Lashes.
Is my attention degraded by the conversation? It's likely, but this applies to many other distractions that one would consider "normal." Just because a person is not giggling, gesturing, or even facing the passenger when engaged in conversation does not mean that they are less involved or engaged than they would be on a cell phone.
So, here is the apparent question. Should we ban radio and air conditioning controls? How about books on tape? Maybe even kids fighting and fussing in the backseat? Unrestrained pets in the car?
Do you see my point? If given a choice to talk hands-free or not at all, most will talk hands-free. It's just like teen sex: they will do it anyway, so you might as well do it as safely as possible.”
