“She taps into an angry and frustrated lower middle class who feel uncared for. Not that she would do anything for them but they think she would. I think women like her strength, feistyness, willingness to stand up to anyone and tell anyone off. Now of course she is full of it. We know she is totally unable to run anything. Well maybe she could coach a girl's high school basketball team but she represents hope for them. Our Prez is so busy trying to clean up the mess of the last eight years that it will be a while before they know he really is on their side and is far more able to help them that dear Sarah.”
Pyrrhic Victoria: Why Men Are Becoming More Like Women

“How about the days when men and women just wanted to take care of each other and their children. That is how it was for my parents. My father made us feel safe and did some nurturing and my mother did a lot of nurturing. I think it is great that dads are doing a lot more nurturing too but we need guys to be who they are not just what we as women think they should be.”

“When my now ex-husband lost his career of 18 years, he freaked out, put the mortgage in my name only, had a bizarre nervous breakdown (with crying fits and tantrums) and started hanging out with teenagers--flirting with the cute ones and doing their homework for them.
He morphed into a 12-year old and expected ME to be the strong one and take care of everything, including paying all the bills, taxes and mortgage. He sat around, played his guitar and listened to music from the 1960's.
He totally lost it, mentally and emotionally.
Now, what I appreciate and look for in a man, is INNER STRENGTH.”

“what the heck are you talking about?! Gender roles (aka what we think a man or woman 'should be') are completely socially constructed. they exist and are the way they are not because of anything besides the fact that we constructed it that way. it is not 'natural' or destiny. it is human-made social construction.”

My bf is a conscientious objector (as a member of a historic peace church) and I would be too (based on philosophical opposition to my participation in war), if there were a draft, and if it would take someone in my physical condition, which it wouldn't, anyway. How is it unequal to oppose the draft for everybody?”

“I agree. We are making a mess of educating and encouraging our boys in most schools. They want to take care of their families, They want to be heros to their women and families and but as boys many retreat into sports and rock and roll, or maybe even drugs or gangs at the deviant end. Sports and rock and roll are great but few men are going to make at good living at that. They need a strong education and career path. There can still be equality at the same time that boys and men are allowed to be boys and men. Responsible, nurturing, respectful, understanding, kind men who feel competent in the world. The one thing men are getting that women don't get these days is selective service.”

What can you say to sway a non-believer? And I mean concrete proof, not that faith thing, since you brought up the proof aspect.”

One of my unpolitical correct areas of interest is boys' education. i think special programs for boys should be developed just like special programs for girls and people look at me like I am crazy. These programs are working great for girls so why wouldn't they work for boys? The boys are in the minority at most colleges and where they are not there is a big push for gender parity. All these boys were born in the 90's and 21st century. Are these boys all gifted with a maturity or special awareness that girls don't have? I have yet to notice it.”

“The idea that "everyone is born a Muslim" is not meant to imply that everyone is born a follower of Islam, or "Muslim" in a circumscribed sense; rather, that each and every human soul, equally, emanates into existence from the One Creative Source of the universe in a state of submission to that Source: "Muslim" in a cosmic sense; only later, under the influence of our parents and our societies, do we become something less vast, more rigidly defined. Thus, one might even speak of one who was born as a Muslim, in the sense I've suggested, and who later was transformed into something less, something more rigidly defined and narrowly identified; something which some might also call "Muslim," but not as that soul was at birth.”

“I know plenty of Christian fundamentalists who wouldn't think twice about killing a Muslim. I don't go to the authorities about them, either.
During Shock and Awe, many of the local Baptist churches showed the whole thing on big screens in the church. People went to church to watch American bombs killing women and children. Don't kid yourself - all fundamentalists are the same. Their assumption of absolution by God for whatever heinous crimes they commit tends to short-circuit their normal conscience and make the unthinkable seem rational.”

“Indeed. All of those incidents should have been huge warning signs. The biggest scandal, to me, is that someone with apparent sympathies for radical Islam and anger at the U.S. could have been allowed to serve as an officer in the military without anyone thinking that, maybe, they should have looked into his case a bit more. During the days of the Cold War, do you think there would have been such tolerance given to an officer who made no bones about his sympathies for Communism and the Soviet Union?
I'm sure "Richard" is experiencing great remorse for having not taken action earlier...as well he should. Hopefully, we won't make that same mistake again. Could you imagine a Muslim Air Force officer who espoused views similar to Hasan being given command of a bomber equipped with nuclear weapons?”

“Famous people also often get away with less because prosecutors see bringing them down, and the resulting publicity, as valuable examples to the rest of us. A recent example is Jerry Koosman, who pitched for the Mets in '60s and 70s and retired from baseball in 1985. He was recently convicted of willful failure to report income and pay Federal taxes and will begin serving a six-month prison sentence in November. There are 9 million Americans who owe back taxes and, in FY 2008, less than 500 of them, who did not have illegal sources of income or were involved in narcotics or money laundering, were incarcerated.”
