Palin Details Death Panels From Facebook
Commented Sep 08, 2009 at 18:02:16 in Politics
“What Palin fails to understand is that there already are Death Panels at the HMOs as in a bureaucrat who is more interested in the bottom line than in helping someone out who denies a claim or cancels a policy because of some small problem that the patient isn't even aware of.
Off topic but I love the people who say that people should be able to buy their insurance across state lines. This is a bad idea as it will create a race to the bottom as some state out there has the lowest insurance costs but doesn't cover anything at all. This will really implode the health care industry since people will have to pay twice once for the insurance company and once for the procedure. There's a reason why some states have higher insurance costs, because they mandate in their laws that the insurance companies have to cover diagnostic testing and other things.
One other thing for people who say that we can't afford to pay for healthcare reform. We as a nation spend around $650,000,000,000 a year on defense costs. Health care reform is expected to cost at least one sixth of that amount.”

“Actually you would be helped by insurance reform as you wouldn't be discriminated against by the insurance companies for a pre-existing condition also the surgery that you could choose to have would be a whole lot cheaper for everyone with those diseases. I remember an episode on Becker where a man came in and was trying to get insurance for his brother who was a construction worker who has Parkinson's and was laid off of his job and couldn't find insurance because he now had a preexisting condition.
Or one that the President used about a woman who had been in a car accident when she was four and the insurance wouldn't cover any of her internal organs, so she just had some really expensive insurance that just covered her skin.”

“I can't have a surgery that doesn't exist is my point. No matter what form of or how much nsurance I have, if there isn't a treatment to treat the spina bifida I have, I always will be disabled, paralyzed from the waist down, and now terminally ill from kidney and liver damage. There is also no surgery or treatment for CP, MS, MD, ALS, Parkinsons, childhood lukemia, sickle cell anemia, and childhood brain tumors. NO amount or form of insurance CAN pay for those, because proper cures for those dont exist”

“Actually all of the big breakthroughs in medicine have come from the universities. The drug companies then buy the patent and market the drug exclusively for x number of years and get to reap their profits from publicly funded research. if the drug companies can't make money off of it in some way then the research just sits on the shelf and goes nowhere. I remember reading an article a while back in some science related publication that female rats seemed to get better faster from brain injuries because of the either estrogen or progesterone in their systems and the scientist had to go through a secondary publication to get the word out because it used commonly available hormones to do the function.
One thing that I am peeved about by the drug manufacturers is that they're allowed to patent genes from your body if they discover them. You should get the patent since you made the genes first not some scientist in the lab. They should get the patent for the test not the genes because they didn't make them only discover what the genes do. It would be like if one of the researchers who discovered HIV had patented the virus and kept competition out.”

“Here is a fairly recent (2003) update on R&D spending, NIH $23 Billion vs. PhRMA $33 Billion... If you read a little further down you will see the argument is not NIH vs. Pharma as much as it is where the Pharma revenues are going... 13% to R&D, 20% to profits, 31% to Sales & Marketing.
As for the Universities, they do many of the trials, including some Phase I and II trials, but they focus more on Phase II/III trials with in vivo subjects. Actual drug discovery is mostly done by PhRMA. They also develop the process for manufacturing the drug, selling the drug, etc. So while both are responsible, they have different roles, and yes, PhRMA profits from it, not the public, after all it is a private industry.
Is it right? That is a question i struggle with because I do not think there should be excessive profit motive in healthcare, but I also don't believe it is a "right." It is somewhere in between IMO, and a lot of it lies in personal responsibility for preventative health, responsible choices in food and exercise, and self-reliance when paying for healthcare.”

“Actually during the Bush Administration all of the people at his town halls were prescreened so that only loyal Bushies were at the town halls. I remember watching about a news program where a man had a shirt that was critical of Bush was put in a choke hold and escorted out of the town hall.
So no the previous administration wanted us to be good little sheep and just do as we were told as they systematically stripped us of our rights with the Patriot Act, warrantless wiretapping, naming people as terrorists (even Americans), torturing people to get false information, moving the alert level up before elections so that the population would feel fear and vote for them, etc.”

Some more food for thought however is --- if you don't agree with Frances, then you are just fooling yourself...because basically the whole idea of insurance is beating the odds...so if you have any type of insurance, you are basically paying for your fellow man...now, with the new proposed Health Care plan, you will pay less for him/her...because if they have health care, they can see doctor's regularly...as opposed to waiting until they are so sick that they have to have emergency treatment...which costs a lot more than preventive care...this just is not rocket science!!!”

“There is a great article out there where Paul Krugman says that the health care plan going through Congress could have been paid for by the Bush tax cuts. If anyone asks how we can pay for health care ask them how we could pay for the $3 trillion Iraq war when we cut taxes and kept the costs off the books.”

“Methinks Wendy is an itelligent person who hasn't quite figured out that she would have to stay in her house 24/7 (without a regulated phone, radio, or tv) because the first step off her property would be onto a public sidewalk or road.
Of course, she could just pay the private owner a road fee at the end of each block, and hope she wasn't mowed down by a drunk driver or a truck without brakes.
You actually are about half-right Wendy....but the only ones who could (theoretically) operate without commonly held agreements are people who live deep in the woods and live off the garden.
We tried that in the sixties, my friend. Trouble is that the pot eventually ran out and we got sober.”

Why else would we decry the torture of prisoners during Korea when the waterboard was used? and why did we prosecute aArmy personel who used it during Vietnam for war crimes?
The answer is that it is torture going back as far as the Spanish Inquisition.”

There is no small business section as there used to be. Small business is mentioned in passing in fiscal, economic, defense sections. As it is an agency and there are widespread problems, and everyone used it as a buzz word for rebuilding the ecomony, we wonder why he eliminated the section.”
