“I hate this argument. Happily, I'm a thin person and have never had an issue with food. But, I know many people who do and it usually starts in childhood. Are CHILDREN responsible for their obesity? The fact is, we're all in this mess together. For us to blame people for "lifestyle" choices, like alcoholism, depression, obesity, etc. is to ignore the human condition.”

“How much more sordid and ugly can this get? I supported Edwards in the beginning and feel completely duped about the person. However, the politics still strike me as correct. I don't have to feel ashamed for supporting the ideas - it's Edwards' shame for discrediting them with his behavior.”

Is the Age of Terror Over?

Commented Sep 11, 2009 at 09:15:50 in World

“Of course it was useful idiots of the left in charge 8 years ago. Senator Hart and others were warning of an attack then - it fell on deaf ears. Attorney General Ashcroft removed federal agents from terrorism assignments to fight pornography. The fact that we were attacked - and probably will be again - is not because of the left or the right. It is because we are a free nation and there are people who wish us harm. Freedom comes at a price. Would you prefer a police state? That's safer.”

ancientmarinader replied on Sep 10, 2009 at 18:50:06

“Letterman in the 80s was, imo, better and funnier than Leno ever was. But that's more about the writing and oddball character of it than the comic timing.”

Justice Sotomayor, Justice Scalia and Our Six Catholic Justices

Justice Sotomayor, Justice Scalia and Our Six Catholic Justices

Commented Aug 29, 2009 at 09:58:15 in Home

“I'm a Roman Catholic who was educated at Catholic high school and university and the FIRST thing that gave me pause about Justice Sotamayor's confirmation was her religion. My father (also a Roman Catholic) and I discussed it at length.

He marveled at the way fundamentalist protestants - who for most of his life had scorned Catholics as "papists" - had championed a number of these Catholic justices. The alliance between conservative Catholics and fundamentalist protestants began BECAUSE of the abortion issues, and is now strengthened by their aversion to gay rights.

In my opinion, the reason that Republican presidents have appointed so many Catholic justices is because there are few fundamentalist protestants who would be qualified, frankly. Besides the abortion issue, Roman Catholics diverge greatly in their religious beliefs from fundamentalist protestants, most notably in the fact that they don't believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible. This is no small distinction. Catholic jurists, for example, don't reject human evolution or geology that proves the earth is billions of years old. It would be difficult to find someone qualified for the Supreme Court who rejected science as most fundamentalists do.

As for Sotomayor, I believe her selection - beyond her obvious qualifications - was based more on ethnicity and gender. The fact that she is Catholic was incidental in this instance. It's because we, as Americans, don't seem able to talk about religion that this issue was sidelined, I think.”

“If ONLY it looked like Vatican II. Roberts, Scalia and Alito are extremely conservative and orthodox Catholics - more Opus Dei than Vatican II (the name given the second Vatican Council convened by John the XXIII to modernize the Church).”

DEJM replied on Aug 29, 2009 at 12:21:05

“While your prescribing yoga for TV personalities - can you give a shout out to Chelsea Handler? I enjoy her show - she's a funny dame - but I almost can't watch her because of the tension you can literally see in her shoulders. This girl needs a down dog more than anybody I've ever seen. She's going to run into back trouble, too - if she hasn't already - because those tight shoulders probably indicate a very tight hip complex, too.

Thanks for the good advice!”

Hostage Diplomacy

Commented Aug 05, 2009 at 20:30:45 in World

“First, these women weren't hostages - they were prisoners charged and convicted of crimes. I'm not saying they were guilty of anything, I'm just saying North Korea wasn't holding them hostage or publically demanding anything for their return.

Second - were any concessions made? Did money change hands? Unless and until these questions are answered in the affirmative, I think this author jumps the gun.”

hp blogger Carne Ross replied on Aug 06, 2009 at 08:18:35

“The visit by Clinton was a concession. If you or I had made the visit to Pyongyang, the women would still be in jail. As for whether they were hostages, I disagree. They were given ludicrously long sentences and the North Koreans then sought concessions for their release. In my book, this makes it pretty clear they were hostages.”

buttonz replied on Aug 05, 2009 at 20:43:56

“First, they were hostages. They were dragged from Chinese soil to NK when they were next to the border. That makes them hostages.

Second. Something was traded but it will be a while before we figure out what it is.

Remember Roxanne being arrested in Iran and thrown into prison?? Shortly after her release we mysteriously released several arrested Al Quds operatives back to Iran.

There is always a trade. And words are not currency of any kind.”

They are oriented towards the defilement of society by white women falling prey to voracious black men cleaning up with an unlimited supply of white women. Heck.. even the President is the product of such a relationship!!! It was eating him alive. That's what takes a whining cubicle grouch and puts a gun in his hand in the middle of a gym!
