“You're absolutely right and I generally agree with your posts, and I'm probably just a bit oversensitive, because it sometimes seems that the term personality disorder becomes too identified with Cluster-B personality disorders, which then gives us personalities from the odd spectrum (Cluster A) indirectly a "bad name". If I tell someone I have a personality disorder I don't want to be immediately associated with the traits of ASPD, that's why I don't like generalizations like "personality-disordered people". I am a personality-disordered person, I'm an eccentric, disturbed, often paranoid, widely dysfunctional and weird bachelour, but I'm neither a sociopath nor a narcissist. I'm sorry I shouldn't have troubled you, but I already had this discussion before today with someone else and I felt the need to "defend" the odd.”

Azure98 on Dec 9, 2013 at 13:13:20

“That makes total sense, and I understand why you would be horrified to be lumped in the same category...yikes! I have only educated myself on Cluster B due to unfortunate experience, but know very little about the rest of the personality disorders. I will be more careful in the future about using general terms. Thanks for bringing my attention to this!”

“If all people lived in large houses and drove large cars no undisturbed landscapes would be left to enjoy, nothing beautiful would remain. I doubt that people genuinely feel good having to work and compete all day for all these products they think they need, because they think they have to keep up with the Joneses. There have always been people in history, who seeked a more frugal life in order to be free of their all-devouring and ever-developing needs. The Kynics, the early christians and so on tried to live a simple life, not because they couldn't afford palaces, but due to their conviction that a lavish life was actually detrimental to happiness and wellbeing. About my dictatorial aspirations: The last thing I'd want to be troubled with is power. I just want to moan, scold and nag.”

“I don't want farmlife, I am a proponent of high-density housing because it saves space and guarantees short ways and the infrastructure can be used by many people, which makes it more efficient. There are also several cultural advantages to more urban settings. I'm not against comfort, chairs and beds are clearly a necessity, required for health and wellbeing while sports cars, planes and generally prestige products of all kinds are not. Furniture items produced with durability in mind are also very long-lasting goods. I typed my post on a computer keyboard indeed while lying on my bed (which is pretty comfy), in my flat, which is about 366 square feet large. To have shelter, to own a comfy bed and other necessary non-prestige furniture should even be a human right in my opinion. I do have a radiator, it's winter. I have no cooling system. Due to my flat's location in a high-density area. I receive my warmth from a highly efficient municipial district heating system, a combined heat and power station, a good example for the advantages of shared infrastructure.”

“Roughly half the population live out side the city or in rural areas. All that you have won't work there. It's been my observation people that live in small houses/apartments live there because that's all they can afford. Same thing with cars/trucks.

Sounds to me like you would be a dictator if you were poofed into leader of the world.”

“There are many quite different personality disorders, I for one am schizotypal and these traits don't describe me. Please don't use the term personality disorder as a synonym for antisocial personality disorder. It's unfair, offending and misleading.”

Azure98 on Dec 9, 2013 at 12:07:25

“I don't know anything about schizotypal, but this list describes the Cluster B personality disorders very well...I just Googled schizotypal, and that appears to be Cluster A.

My post was to point out that the list is very valid, and not at all "stupid" like the original poster dismissed it as. I didn't realize that anyone would read my post as implicating *all* people with personality disorders, as I am very aware there are many different kinds with different traits, so I apologize for not being more clear. I just think it's unwise for those who have had no experience and no education around Cluster B types to simply dismiss information like this because they are not familiar with it, or don't want to believe it, when in reality everyone should *want* to be educated to look for these red flags. It would save a lot of heartache.”

“Please be fair, there are quite a few different personality disorders with specific symptoms and characteristics, I happen to be a "personality disordered individual" myself, and I'm certainly quite eccentric, but I'm not at all a charming, manipulating sociopath. Please don't use the term personality disorder synonymous with antisocial personality disorder.”

“But you want to be liked for who you are, don't you? You don't want to be a distorted fantasy-object in the mind of another person, you don't want to be perceived as something you are not, especially by a person you want to like you. It seems kind of worthless to be liked for being totally witty, humorous intelligent and beautiful, when you know that these attributes attached to you are at best exaggerated and otherwise downright untrue.”

“Does flattery really work that well? If I was bombarded with flattery, I'd grow suspicious. Being idealized is not as nice as it's made out to be - you want to be loved for who you really are, you don't want to be someone's fantasy. An excess of flattery is just too fraught with problems and it can even become an insult if the other person refuses to recognize who you are and keeps on babbling about your virtues.”

David Van Horne on Dec 8, 2013 at 17:22:59

“It's not overt flattery; unless the target is dense. It's almost undetectable, but it ends with you feeling better when you speak with that person.”

Morgantheaxe on Dec 8, 2013 at 17:13:42

“Flattery only works if the person flattering you is someone you WANT flattering you. Most people, not all, will only go on dates with people they want to like them.”
