Reid Sees More Problems Than Solutions In Using Reconciliation

Reid Sees More Problems Than Solutions In Using Reconciliation

“The democrats won't use reconciliation because they don't want to own this failure of a bill. It's the same reason it won't ever become law. Oh something may end up passing the senate (big may), but whatever comes out of conference is dead on arrival in one or both houses.”

“It's not the tax breaks bankrupting our country, it is the entitlement programs.”

Indon replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 19:23:47

“The only domestic spending our government engages in which is remotely close to defense spending are medicare and social security - neither of which have incurred one cent of debt (yet, anyway - in some nebulous future decades ahead either might concievably go bust).

So I'm curious as to what 'entitlement programs' you are referring to?”

“With a username like freethinker, I'd expect you to actually think for yourself. There is always a choice. Even Obama today acknowledged that the national debt is too large. 1/10 of our GDP and growing. And most of you want to tack on another huge entitlement program that despite what our congressional leaders say, isn't going to cut costs, isn't going to be deficit neutral, and isn't going to reign in medicare costs.

Inflation is our only means of freeing ourselves from under the weight of our debt. And believe me, that isn't going to be fun for anyone.”

“I guarantee you that had you not had enough money in your account already to cover your withdrawal, they would not let you pull money from a check being deposited. It really shouldn't be much of an issue these days since checks clear within a day in most instances. A couple of years ago that was not the case, and was the reason for the policy. It's hardly abusive to require a person to actually have money in their account before allowing them to pull money out of it.”

“Standard practice to not allow withdrawls on checks until they clear. Nothing new. You borrowed money on a guarantee of payment (check deposit), and they charged you a fee for it. Was it excessive... yes $50 is excessive. In my opinion you are either very young, or just got your first checking account.”

jkrupiarz replied on Nov 04, 2009 at 16:57:02

“It is not standard practice to not allow withdrawals on checks until they clear. If that were the reason then they would hold the funds for more than one day. Depositing a check for $250 from my customer and then not allowing me access to the funds until the next day is wrong and abusive. Particularly since, if that check actually does not clear, they will charge me a fee for that. The man did not borrow money. He was withdrawing his own money from his own paycheck that he had just deposited.”

“When you need to be TOLD to keep more than $100 in your account that you will never touch, then you are right, something is wrong (lack of savings). Like the fact that we (as a nation, not I) spend our selves into a hole, racking up charges on credit cards that most will never be able to pay off (and then complain about the interest rates). Big suprise that our government does the same thing.

I'm sorry, but if you don't have an extra hundred dollars to keep as a safety net in your checking account, then 1. start saving, 2. you probably shouldn't have a checking account, 3. you should stop shopping at Itunes until you do, 4. balance your check book every day.

Banks to plenty of things that irritate me, but you can't blame them because you can keep up with your personal finances.”

“There's nothing wrong with using a debit card for minor purchases, but you have to know how much money you have in your account. If he can't figure out what purchases were causing the overdrafts then he is playing his account balance too close to the red. I know these are tough times for many, but it seems like a lot of Americans these days are just incapable of keeping up with their finances. Maybe $33 is too much money for an overdraft fee that was covered the next day, but lets face it, you don't have to use those debit cards. If you aren't responsible enough to manage your account properly, then you probably should stick to cash.”
