“Yeah, but the Okinawans have a beef. This is one of those situations where US Servicemen have done everything to wear out our welcome there. From the SOFA agreement which places servicemen out of the reach of the Japanese legal system to the sexual assaults to the plane accidents. We even screwed up a chance for Okinawa to become an independent state when President Richard Nixon gave Okinawa back to Japan in 1972. We screwed up, so the folks in Okinawa want our forces out. Note to US Forces: US service people need to learn the culture of the countries we set up bases in and you need to be serious in learning that culture, regardless of circumstance.”

thepoliticalcat replied on Dec 29, 2009 at 13:06:27

“Also, the Japanese are adamant in their refusal to have US military bases on *their* territory. They're perfectly OK with fobbing this off on the Okinawans, who have suffered from centuries of oppression at their hands as it is. And thank you for pointing out the well-deserved rancor with which the local civilian populace regards the US military bases. They provide nothing, or very little, in terms of growth, development, or economic return, but take up large amounts of land, water, power, and other resources, and breed a "camp follower" mindset among the inhabitants, whose other avenues to economic success are suppressed by the military presence.”

“You have got to be kidding me. Mac OS X is arguably the most easiest to use of all the Unix and Linux distros period. Not even Ubuntu gets close and it's free.”

pflickner replied on Dec 29, 2009 at 12:51:12

“So? We get free OS, free apps, ease of installation, the ability to use MS when we have to, and the ability to do all of that for -- ready? Well, it depends on whether you want to use a netbook (that's around $300), a new desktop (cheap one around $400-500) or -- wait for it -- an old 386! Yeah, it'll work on an old 386, so that's, what, nearly free? I have a 386 laptop that I picked up for $20 and an old laptop from when I was in college a few years back that both now have linux. The latter also has XP Pro.

I'll take nearly free with a bit of a learning curve over $1200, especially right now. So you go ahead and enjoy your overpriced toy. I'll enjoy my also-virus-free OS and apps that didn't cost me hardly a thing. Can your Mac dual-boot? If so, try the linux.”

PenguinLinux replied on Dec 29, 2009 at 12:31:30

“You don't realize Mac OS X is a derivative of FreeBSD, which itself is a derivative of UNIX. Of course Mac OS X also contains NeXtstep code as well. Just like Windows, Mac OS X is closed-source, whereas Linux distros like Ubuntu are 100% free.”

There's no "Let's take extra security precautions" with this. Oh Wow, we are going to have to do "full body searches" now? Nonsense. Moreover, it seems that pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) mixed with feces decreases the effectiveness of the explosives somehow. ;)”

“I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm beginning to think that the explosives were carried in his rectum. Why? Check out the excerpt from the Wikipedia article:

The substance he tried to detonate was reportedly more than 80 grams (3 oz) of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a powerful plastic explosive. It is among the most powerful of explosives, in the same chemical family as nitroglycerin. The substance was analyzed at Quantico by the FBI. An FBI affidavit filed in the Eastern District of Michigan indicated that preliminary findings reflected that the device contained PETN, and that authorities found the remains of the syringe that may have contained chemicals used to trigger a detonation via chemical reaction. The suspect apparently carried it onto the plane in a soft plastic container, possibly a condom. However, much of the packaging was lost in the fire. Other reports suggested that the explosives were sewn into the suspect's underwear.

The only reason you would need a condom is the following:

Condoms have also been used to smuggle cocaine, heroin, and other drugs across borders and into prisons by filling the condom with drugs, tying it in a knot and then either swallowing it or inserting it into the rectum.”

AT&T's New York iPhone Trouble: Company Refuses To Sell Smart Phone Online To NYC Customers (UPDATE)

“Though I have an iPhone and I'm with AT&T, I hope those rumors concerning Apple and Verizon are true. Seems that in New York at least. AT&T can't handle all of those iPhone users.”

DannyEV replied on Dec 28, 2009 at 10:44:27

“In NYC AT&T is total BS. I tried iPhone and finally gave up on it after a year. It was a total ripoff. It would never download email and as to surfing the web--FORGET IT. Every time I called 'em to complain I got the same BS excuses--either I was on too high a floor for it to work or I was just in one of those parts of Manhattan that wasn't covered by their hardware--and I was in the Wall Street/Financial district! Can you believe their trying to tell me that the AT&T didn't cover Wall Street?? But it was just as bad in the West Village, the East Village and the Upper West Side. No matter where I went in Manhattan the "service" was kr@p.

In that two years, my iPhone never successfully downloaded an email for me in Manhattan.

yup--I finally gave up and went to Verizon. Bought a Blackberry Storm--their answer to the iPhone. And I gotta tell you, though I hate the Storm (seriously) you can't argue with Verizon's network in NYC. It works. And it's usually reasonably fast.

I was very sorry to give up on the iPhone but a great phone is only as good as its network.

So after taking our money all this time AT&T is finally admitting that while they had the product, they didn't have the service to go with it--but that didn't stop them from selling it.”

“The problem with abstinence-only programs and virginity pledges are that young people are pledging to please their parents, not because of an inner resolve and commitment of their own. I personally think it's creepy to have those ceremonies with your dad as your escort. That's why some evangelicals encourage young people to marry early. Because they know young people over 18 can't hold it off for too long.”
