I hope that those of use who are tired of the bigotry can say to these extremists that enough is enough and that they have had their year to spew it. Going foward, we need to challenge each and everyone and expose them for the bigots they are.”

War and Peace

Commented Dec 10, 2009 at 20:18:02 in Politics

“One question I want to ask you and my fellow peace activists is : what do you suggest that President Obama does on the issue of Al Queda??? Should he negoitiate a peace treat with Bin Laden or hold a peace march against him in the capital Kabul???”

phantoma replied on Dec 10, 2009 at 20:34:17

“As Mr. Jones has demonstrated in this article, you are creating a false dichotomy.
The question isn't whether one should sit down and have a beer with Bin Laden.
The question is whether 100,000 troops in Afganistan will defeat the Taliban or instead strengthen them and create further instability in the region. And if yes to the former, how and when?

The dichotomy you should be making is the one Mr. Jones is making: war OR peace? That'sa clear distinction that democratic and civilzed societies and their leaders have a duty to make; it has clear humanitarian, political, financial and moral implications that cannot be concealed by (Obama's) flawed rhetoric.”

A Tale of Two Obamas

Commented Dec 07, 2009 at 08:40:16 in Politics

“The key appointments President Obama made as part of his administration have contributed significantly to the policies that are aimed at the center. Imagine if Gov Dean had been appointed Secretary of HHS, we would have had a robut health care reform! What if the chief economic adviser was someone like Prof Stiglirz, Krugman or Sachs?

I hope that in a futre analysis we can be honest about two things which are:
(i) we in the progressive activist community are largely to blame for not being out upfront and pushing for the changes right from day one. Why is it that none of the progressive acivists have organized a massive rally and push back for real health care reform, real financial regulation reform etc? We are all sitting infront of our electronics and just complaining instead of taking it to the street
(ii) many of the legislators who make up the Democratic caucus are NOT progressive but rather mild republicans.

In my mind two things could have made a huge difference in the kind of policies we are getting and these are:
(i) if only Senator Teddy Kennedy had lived through President Obama's term he would have pushed for progressive legislation and had POTUS's ear;
(ii) money in politics has completely corrupted our system and we need to push for public financign of campaigns if we are to get rid of this cancer of corruption and influence peddling”

jmpurser replied on Dec 07, 2009 at 09:06:10

“First, Ted Kennedy, for all his "Lion of Liberalism" was much more of a pragmatist than Obama will ever be. He defined the center, not the left. His hallmark was in working across the aisle, not in advancing a progressive agenda.

Second, it's past time (at least 16 years past time) to face the fact that the Democratic party is not, and is not likely to ever become again, the party of the progressives. Honestly when it comes down to what they actually accomplish it's hard to say they're to the left of the GOP at all. Instead of a situation were a few Democrats are too far right to be "real" Democrats the actual situation is there are a few Democrats who are too far left to be real Democrats. In fact, there was exactly one who stuck up for doing the right thing on health care and that was Dennis Kucinich. The rest jumped on the corporate welfare bandwagon and let Obama drive them home.

Finally, the progressives screamed first and loudest at Obama's behavior in office. And he firmly closed and locked the door. It's over. He's not just "not one of us", he's actively hostile to our point of view.

If you want to make a true difference find a third party or two to support who actually support your principles. The only way you'll ever change the Democratic party is by writing a check bigger than the corporate checks they're depositing today.”

Irizzee replied on Dec 07, 2009 at 09:01:53

“has any other President been judged so harshly so soon in his administration????

Everyone is quick to criticize without acknowledging the huge mess that President Obama inherited domestically and internationally - he has been putting out fires since he was elected and we are jsut a group of ungrateful and impatient citizens who want every thing now.

Why is it that we mainly ask: why has President Obama not done a, b, c?

Why don't we ask what we have done as regular people to help him push through the agenda we hope for??”

“I believe MOST people were NOT listening to Then-Candidate Obama about Afghanistan. From the beginning of the campaign to the end, President Obama said he would increase resources and focus on the place where the people who gave directives to the attackers of 911 were based - Afghanistan.

Why is everyone acting surprised when President Obama is being consistent about Afghanistan as he was during ALL the campaign.

Of course I am one of those who oppose the increase in troops but I CANNOT say that this is not what he said during the campaign - many just did not listen”

LaughingMan replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 05:03:53

“It's the same thing with Gay marriage. During the campaign Obama clearly stated repeatedly that he does not believe in Gay marriage but rather supports civil unions. Yet, barely after his inauguration, he was being blamed for the Prop 8 failure in CA, (as if he could have done anything about it, as a Federal official, and it being a State matter, even if he supported gay marraige) and has been the scapegoat ever since, any time a Gay marriage vote falls at the ballot in any state.

And no, they WERE listening when he said that (and what he said about Afghanistan) and they UNDERSTOOD him clearly. They just chose to believe in their own fantasy of what they thought he stood for, so they could come back and blame him and bash him anytime anything turned out different.

All these people whining about how much Obama has failed them after just 10 months in office are a joke. That much is for certain. They're either cynics of the highest order because the know the reality, but like Republicans they just chose to argue the ludicrous side of the argument, or they are really really naive.”

The issue is not whether he is increasing the troop level but whether he is increasing the troop level without an end game.

Not a single responsible person, not a single thinking person, voted for him as a way to get endless war. He didn't run on that platform. He didn't get elected for that reason.”

The Obama Visit to China - What the U.S. Press Missed

Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 09:12:18 in World

“Thank God someone else is mentioning this. Here a few of my extracts I wrote to a media critic :

US reporters missed the most important coverage of critical geo-political developments and the realignment on a number of fronts. This was a teaching moment about the inter-relationship between US and Asia and the implications for us domestically. The media once again failed the people because they were fixated on non-issues like the angry tea-baggers circus surrounding the Quitter from Alaska. Remember the focus on O.J. when Rwanda genocide was happening.

Ok POTUS did not get immediate results due to US' economic vulnerability. One needed to mention the groundwork laid on the trip and the various tensions among these nations. No wonder the republican Ambassador to China was disappointed with the lack of focus on the key challenges that lie ahead for this country.

Other issues will lie in archives until sometime when someone realizes their value.

During the Press Conference with President Hu of China POTUS said that they reached a workable goal that will be used as a framework for Copenhagen. But most people in the US did not hear it because the US MSM media was busy criticizing POTUS for showing respect for the Emperor of Japan.

I was reminded of how many in the US media ignored the significance of President Obama's speech in Prague until they were caught unawares when it was quoted as a breakthrough event by the Nobel committee.”

Obama In Flux

Commented Nov 14, 2009 at 20:42:46 in World

“Thanks for the summary of the many challenges that President Obama and the global community at large face - ths is a ciritical time on the geo-political stage.

I am personally glad that President Obama is the most pwerful person in the world now and he is the one making these extremly tough decisions.

We as a global community must thank all the American voters who decided to elect on No/4th/2008, a President with most of the tools a leader making these tough decisions would need such as President Obama's own:
- global personal and family background which provides a broad view,
- his high intellect,
- empathy and personal kindness,
-his ability not to hold silly grudges,
-his quiet strength (shown in his actions not to shout empty slogans and threats but push back clamly behind closed doors),
-his strong and smart spouse,
-and most importantly his calm demeanor and insistence on have all options out on the table.

We are lucky that these burdens are now all laid on the capable shoulders of a person with high internal discipline and supreme confidence in himself and those he has entrusted with the importan responsibilities.

My only disappointment in some Americans is how we have quickly forgotten or choose to ignore the the magnitude of the challenges handed to President Obama or our pure selfishness and impatience as he tries to address these multiple fronts”

Cuban Vote at UN: "Here We Go Again"

Commented Oct 29, 2009 at 14:50:21 in World

“Most newsoutlets in the US did not report what I read last week from the European press that last week President Obama SPECIFICALLY and asked the President of Spain to ask the Cuban leaders to publicly show some little bit of change in a few areas so that his administration can get additional flexibility to make more changes.

The report also said that the message from President Obama was delivered promptly to Cuba by the Foreign Minister of Spain.

While I do not support the embargo on Cuba, I believe that a more balanced article would have provided some insights about the more indrect ways that the Obama Administration is trying to reach out directly to Cuba.

In addition, anyone who pays close attention to politics in this country would expect that some small signals need to be coming from the Cuban side in order to encourage additional steps to what has already been done in these 9 months”

who38 replied on Oct 30, 2009 at 05:12:29

“Maybe it is time for the US to be more direct in trying to reach out to Cuba. Using indirect methods to be direct can be confusing. Why should Cuba give small signals to encourage additional steps by the US? Cuba did not start this fight; the US did. They own the embargo and only they can make it stop.

As a US citizen, I am underwhelmed by my country's continuance of the embargo. It has not worked in the past, is not working now, and won't work in the future. If the Senator from New Jersey is the problem, he needs to wind up on the same trash heap as HoJo.

As you know many US citizens travel to Cuba via other countries and the government generally does not prosecute them. As the law is not longer being enforced, why does it exist? It has become a silly pretense to assuage a few Bautista relics who continue to focus on the past.

If you study history prior during the time of Bautista, you will understand why the Cubans were happy to support Castro.”

The challenge from the White House was also directed at all the other news outlets that use the fake outrage from Fox to guide your programming whithout taking time to perform the due deligence about the sources of the fake consipiracy.

The media has lost all credibility by failing to check out even basic facts

Rather than voicing outrage about the fact that Fox has been called out for bluring the news division with the opinion programs, you should equally be concerned about a media outlet that

(i) goes and tries to manufacture news by acting as a cheer-leader for citizens gathered and asking them to "turn up the volume" (remember the video of a fox producer during a teabagger party)

(ii) actively promotes fake consipiracies like birthiers, czars, President Obama School Speech, muslims taking over capital hill, Prez Obama building concetration camps etc a

(iii) presenters who imitate the poisoning of the Speaker of the House.

If you are honest with your self and were not just trying to protect the poor standards to which the media has sank you would admit that yes fox blurs the news and opinion and they are nothing better than the a tabloid”

I do not support for the sake of war but can you please tell the nation what should happen to Afgganistan if NATO withdraws now as you signal?

As I see it two simple issues are wrong with the argument to focus on Pakistan:
(i) has it occured to you that you are actually indirectly advocating for war with another country because you are blinded in your opposition to adding troops to a war that is already in progress?

(ii) The Pakistan population and millitary have made it cleat that they would never allow US trops on their soil so the argument seems moot - unless of course you believe that these concerns of the Pakistan people must be ignored.

I think you have also ingored the fact that for the first time, the Pakistan millitary is putting serious pressure on the extremists that operate on the border between these two countries

Unpalatable as it is staying in Afghanistan is the best option the US has to put pressure on the Jihadist as Pakistan adds pressure from the other side”

Insurers Royally Played Obama

Commented Oct 13, 2009 at 21:03:59 in Home

“somehow I think President Obama will have the last laugh at the expense of the insurance companies because they have now cut their cord and there is no turning back.

I remember something that then-Candidate Obama said a few times in the campaign as that is he will not start a fight but once someone tries to take advantage of him, he will turn around and hit back so fast before the opponent knows what has hit him.

Remember what happened during the Auto-industry restructing when some hedge funds tried to double-cross him? Well POTUS quickly slapped them down and sent them into bankruptcy and they ended up loosing what they would have got if they had corporated.

In an ironic twist of fate, President Obama was the one who was holding the public option in the balance and by trying to play him for naught, the insurance companies may have just ensured that the final bill will have a strong public option. Judging from the comments of Senators Rockfeller and Menendez tonight, the AHIP report may have just guaranted the presence of Public Option”
