10 Things They Don't Tell You About Raising Children

10 Things They Don't Tell You About Raising Children

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 11:58:54 in Living

“I don't have kids yet, but I know that I WILL have the courage to parent. One only has to teach public school for all of 15 minutes to realize that there are a lot of parents who don't have the courage to be a parent. Being your child's best friend may seem easier at the time, but yields disastrous consequences.”

“I'd like to point out that, with just a few modifications to take into account the issue, this also works extremely well if you are in an emotionally abusive relationship. My husband is very manipulative and can be very childish. For a few years the marriage was too good to leave, but too bad to stay. I had read a book that outlines very similar steps, and VERY slowly things have been getting better.”

“I am on Weight Watchers and have begun losing the weight that I gained from stress eating during my DOCTORAL PROGRAM. So if I happen to have a heart attack in the middle of my weight loss program and writing my dissertation, does that mean I have been irresponsible? Don't get me wrong - I believe you're asking for trouble if you are eating bad fast food every day and not trying to quit smoking if you are, and perhaps no matter what you say, it's going to sound like self-righteousness to some extent. But to just look at me on the street, you wouldn't have any clue perhaps that I'm trying to change my life, yet you already assume that I'm just lazy.”

David Letterman, Married Men and the Single Women Who Want Them

Commented Oct 09, 2009 at 20:18:47 in Entertainment

“I had a relationship with a married man when I was in college. It was very brief and certainly only for sex. I chalk it up to being young and stupid. I was scared to death the whole time - I knew what I was doing was wrong but darn it, I liked this guy. When "Waiting to Exhale" came out I certainly sympathized with Savannah (played by Whitney Houston), who has a thing with a married man. As much as the other woman may feel she is being empowered, the fact of the matter is that she is the exploited one (depending upon individual circumstances, of course). While I never had ANY romantic feelings for the guy, I knew that I would NEVER actually mean anything to this person, that I would NEVER have a future with him, and ultimately, if anything ever came down to my word against his, he would sell me down the river in a heartbeat. Our parting was amicable, but I often wonder about his wife.”

“I can believe it. My brother-in-law has Asperger's (sic) Disease, and I'm pretty sure my husband has an extremely mild form of it. If my husband were diagnosed, I think I could deal with his treatment of me from time to time a little better. He doesn't understand the concept of personal space and some social cues, a trait which is typical of people with Asperger's - I wouldn't say this makes my life a living hell, but it certainly makes it much less that what I envisioned married life to be.”

“I completely agree with you, but I'd like to play devil's advocate for a moment...I teach at the college level, where believe me, students need no excuse to cut class. I certainly agree that if you are a germy mess you shouldn't come to class and "share the joy" with those around you, but waking up with a headache is also not a reason to act like you're at death's door and can't come to class. (These students also often manage to stage a "miraculous recovery" at the end of the day when it's time for social clubs, sports, etc.)”
Why President Obama Gets My Vote As A Spiritual Warrior

Why President Obama Gets My Vote As A Spiritual Warrior

Commented Sep 27, 2009 at 09:48:39 in Living

“I too agree that Obama is a true spiritual warrior. He does the one thing that is, ironically, probably driving a lot of us nuts - but he's using his quiet strength and trying to reach out rather than just slap back (which is my first inclination when dealing with the OTHER political party).

I am a teacher and a musician by profession. I don't think you can truly be a good teacher without being a spiritual warrior to some degree. While I teach on the college level I still have to deal with many of the issue my K-12 colleagues do (and as I did when I taught K-12). Students have so many personal issues to deal with now that it seems like more parents tried to shield their children from in earlier times. I certainly rely on my sense of empathy with my students when they are in trouble, and try to get them to focus and see the value in trying to fully live. As a result, I have, in recent years, not once dreaded going to work. And in this day and age, that is a blessing!”

We can deal with Mr. Moore's hypocrisy later. Take care of the thugs who are turning hard-working, honest people out onto the streets.

I'm living with the threat of homeless myself, every day. For the first time in my life I'm on food stamps. I don't like this. I want to work. Well, I am working, but for now it's volunteer work, just for the sake of working. I'm not getting paid for it. But I do have bills to pay like everyone else. I don't deserve this. “It's certainly a noble cause and we can all do things to reduce waste. However, all the activity that individual people do only accounts for something like 10-20% of our environmental impact. Until manufacturing and industry gets its house in order, we could all live like this guy, on virtually nothing, and it still wouldn't make much difference.”

mamacat replied on Sep 13, 2009 at 14:07:27

“A very good point, but I think that indirectly consumers are responsible for more of an impact than you have stated.
About 97% of electricity is lost in transmission, so a reduction by the end user makes a huge impact at the production site. Since most of our electricity is still generated by burning coal, reducing electrical use will reduce generation 30 fold.
Much of our petroleum use in this country is as fuel in personal transportation. While I don't have the figures in front of me, I am pretty sure it is higher than 20%.
By recycling, we reduce the need for mining and smelting of ores, and about 50% of our manufacturing and industry operate in response to consumer demand. So, reducing our consumption of non-essentials will have an impact on those sectors of the economy.”

While I'm not "old" (I'm 38), I am old enough to realize that "wham bam thank you ma'am" is no longer enough. Some of my most wonderful moments are in the arms of my husband of 13 years because sex is no longer an issue of prowess or impressing someone - it's about communication and love. I often hear the term "hook up" and just cringe. I used to be one of those people in college. I'm glad I'm past that now.”
