“Every day Obama will start with "How goes the war?"

"Not well, sir," will be the honest answer.

"What can we do about it?"

"Withdraw or send more troops."

"Can't do either."

New leaders have a chance to repudiate past mistakes. One chance.”

By early nest year we'll have over 100,000 troops there.

Maybe that is a repudiation of past mistakes.”

They don't want us there.

I recently saw a video in which a Taliban leader said "More US troops mean more targets."

Like the President, you must be too young to remember Vietnam.

Those of us who do think you could run the films of Vietnam and see all the same components of a war we cannot win.”

“The war is really about the oil in Kazakhstan, but the Russians and Chinese are closer than we are.

We need to give up these wars for oil and spend the money at home on wind and solar.”

DahliaZ replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 21:21:04

“Thinking the war in Afghanistan is about oil takes a deliberate, bad faith blindness. And if you really want to end reliance on foreign oil (a good position, I believe) - then I hope you are for domestic drilling which can do wonders in the midterm, while the long process continues making renewables viable on a long term scale.

I'd slow down getting excited about wind though - it's not turning out to be economically viable. Denmark can't afford to use their produced wind energy because it would cause a loss to them, so they sell it to their neighbors. Denmark remains old school.

Of course, a great mid and long term answer is nuclear - the French have done very well with that.”
