Marine Commandant Defies White House on Gay Troops

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 16:18:31 in Politics

“My President, Barack Obama, must immediately fire General James Conway to indicate to me that he is the President of the United States of America, that he is depoliticizing the US Armed forces, and the people that the ideology of the PNAC and the Neocon Republicans are NOT the policy of the United States of America or the Armed Forces. It has nothing to do with gay soldiers and it has all to do with the policy of the American Democratic Republic. I support and all Americans should support the men and women of the United States Armed Forces but no one is required to agree with or tolerate personal ideology or any ideology of the leadership of the U.S. Armed Forces; they are the employees of the USA and we the people and the American people should not take kindly to threats by any military general, such as James Conway. He and Benedict Arnold have their place in American history.
Mr. President, this is not a time for consensus; now is the moment of truth and time to show that you represent all Americans, whether they like it or not, and fire General Conway for disloyalty to we the people of the United States and our duly elected President.!”

“Yes, UpstatreNY, you are absolutely right. Cost of health care insurance, private or public option, should consist of actual costs plus profits divided by the base covered; that is the accepted concept of insurance of any kind, to join together to distribute the cost over a larger population. The purpose of Obama's "reform" is to eliminate waste, take advantage of purchasing in quantity, regulation to eliminate the cost of corruption, protect the consumer, and eliminate duplication and paper work; in other words, the purpose of universal health care and reform is to improve the quality of health care for the nation.
When the profit motive is involved, the corporate policy is to minimize the quality of health care to provide the widest margin of profit; that is why I prefer to choose a quality health insurance of a non-profit corporation to entrust my health care; Kaiser Permanente provides for emergency care outside the area of operation but it would be an advantage to have a public option policy that existed nationwide. My choice of a non profit private company is based upon quality and trust and not cost. But the Obama plan gives everyone a choice; I don't know what opponents (except for insurance companies selfish intersts) are bitching about.”

“How can Americans be so ignorant? The public option will cost the people who choose it, the same amount as what MY HEALTH INSURANCE COST S TODAY! My health insurance has been entrusted to Kaiser Permanente for 50 years and it is the same health insurance carried by most people (millions) in Southern California, because Kaiser Permanente Insurance is a NON PROFIT CORPORATION. Kaiser Permanente is in the health care business to provide health care for people and not in business to make a profit. The quality of my health care is not dependent on whether or not it is profitable to my health insurance provider. Profit making health insurance companies are in business to make a profit by proving health care for people as cheaply as they possibly can to provide the greatest margin of profit for the company (just like Wal-Mart); if a premium payer is at risk to profits, they are dropped. It is time for the American people to decide if they want health care solely to provide health care or health care designed to make the largest possible margin of profit for the carrier; the Obama plan and the public option is simply to give all Americans the choice that those of us in Southern California enjoy. The public option is no more socialist than public schools.”

Is Tom Horne related to the President of ASU, or what?

Gone is the political party of President Abe Lincoln, President Teddy Roosevelt, and Chief Justice Earl Warren..
Republicans today are disgusting! Republicans are the violators of the Constitutional American democratic Republic.
Republicans have become the illicit party of Watergate, Iran-Contra, Weapons of Mass Destruction Conspiracy, imperialistic wars of choice, torture of prisoners of war, illegal spying on their own citizens, gun toting enemies of compassionate universal health care, a party of hate.
The Republican Party of Lincoln has become a disgusting entity. RIP, party of Lincoln, a tragic ending.”

Did we forget civil discourse? I pray for our country. It has been overtaken by a core of evil that gets its life blood and power from those " personality clowns" that pass for our newsmen today. The Media's Treatment of Palin's Outrageous "Death Panel" Claims

Commented Aug 13, 2009 at 11:54:48 in Media

“My best friend died because Aetna Health Insurance panel of doctors would not approve life extending surgery; the Aetna panel did not disapprove, they simply withheld approval until my best friend died. That, I suppose, is not a crime. A few years later, Aetna was sued in a similar case and Aetna had to pay the largest award yet for failing to provide benefits because their 'panel of doctors' did not approve. Aetna announced that they were doing away with the panels and the reason was, "the panels are no longer serving a benefit to the insured." Since then, Aetna has become one of the biggest health insurers in America. Medical care reform is suppose to deal with insurance companies that do not provide benefits that are due the insured.
No one else cared about my friends case, even some of her own friends, they all were confident that it could never happen to them.

“I realize my other post is a duplicate but I'm very tired of hearing this bill compared to the military's care. Military men and women are dying from stupid and silly errors (a child's breathing tube used instead of adult - wrong parts being removed on a regular basis) and spouses are not only dealing with their returning home men and women, but taking months to get into care, being given more dopey pills instead of MRI's to find and fix the problem and more and more bases under BRAC are closing facilities. In my area, we've lost the ER and spouses can no longer use urgent care at the hospital they just sunk $25 million into. My infant was getting severe nosebleeds and it took more than 3 weeks for a so called non life threatening problem. The appointment line determined the severity of his problem and decided how long it would take for him to be seen. Not to mention, they are referring off base more and more as they cannot handle the patient load. Medicare is nearly bankrupt and it took more than 3 years for my grandmother to get a hip replacement while shoving pills down her throat. Major frauds are uncovered in Medicare almost daily.”

Your statement, is in fact, correct. And it was never meant to be about differing levels of education or performance, but about choice, which I get the distinct feeling Mr. Levy is opposed to.”

“Arne is actually a good guy and he improved the statistics of Chicago schools. But, statistics are not what is important; students are important and after students, teachers are important. Arne never had to look a public school student in the eye and say to them, "Your future depends on me, kid, and all I can to is try the best of my ability!"
Never trust your life or the value of your life to a statistician!

Charter Schools: Time to Cull the Herd

Commented Jun 23, 2009 at 12:10:29 in New York

“Arne Duncan never had the responsibility for thirty five students in a classroom. There is lots about public education he does not understand. One thing he doesn't understand is that charter schools detract from other public schools; they take from the student norm of other schools and they take funding from other public schools. Charter schools are promoted by critics and opponents of public schools who do not believe ion democratic public school immigration. Charter schools segregate by class!
The other thing Arne doesn't understand is that testing students with 'standardized' tests is not appropriate for evaluating teachers. Students and teachers are human beings and not statistics. Statistics depend upon all the variable of a test being fully considered. It is impossible to factor the emotional and pysiological effests of human beings in testing achievement and tests of achievement are not per se tests of teacher quality; there is more to teacing than indoctrinating students in the multiplication table.
To fully understand, you have to spend 30 years in the trenches of public school politics.”

Worst Week Ever: Republicans Unhinged

Worst Week Ever: Republicans Unhinged

Commented Feb 27, 2009 at 03:29:53 in Politics

“Yes it was a bad week for Republicans and I, as a Democrat, enjoy the implosion. One item by Jenkins that I would comment on was that McCain's remarks, recorded on TV about the Marine One helicopter high costs were not supposed (?) to imply Obama was to blame; McCain was reporting a group discussion in which he was a part, that took place just before Obama's calling on him. Obama properly responded that the helicopters were ordered by Bush but he had not decided what to do about acceptance of the helicopter or if new ones were needed. McCain later said in an interview that he had not meant to blame Obama but was using Marine One as an example of what his group had been discussing, costs that were over and beyond reason due to gouging by contractors. I think the Republicans screwed up enough on their own and we don't have charge McCain with accusations in this case. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Obama seemed to be aware of the helicopter fiasco and legitimately explained it for the TV audience. I think McCain will and should disagree with Obama when there is something to disagree about, but he seems to have quit campaigning. I noticed he stood and applauded Obama a number of times in Obama's speech to the joint houses.”

Pammy2 replied on Feb 27, 2009 at 06:54:06

“I have to respectfully disagree with your assumption about McCain's motive. I think he knew EXACTLY what he was doing. The camera was on him and he asked that question of Obama because he knew the mainstream media would never put it in context and the Republican party 'base' (Southern, white, poorly educated) would make the conclusion that they no doubt did: Obama ordered a bunch of expensive, unnecessary helicopters. They wouldn't have bothered to listen to Obama's answer. I'll bet talk radio reported it just the way - whether McCain intended them to or not.

Remember, McCain ran the sleeziest campaign in my lifetime so there's no reason to believe he all of a sudden got his 'honorable' credentials back just because he lost? I don't think so. I think all that 'honor' crap was an illusion to begin with.”

Commented Feb 21, 2009 at 22:29:56 in World

“Diplomatic relations with Cuba is long overdue. Americans should be allowed to visit Cuba and Cubans should be allowed to visit the USA. Travel agencies in Europe are pushing vacationing in Cuba, and Americans are not allowed to vacation there. Yet Americans are allowed to travel in the Mid East, China, and North Africa. American policy is complete nonsense. Cuba is a natural to trade with the USA; American policy only hurts the people of Cuba and Castro is no worse than China’s leaders or Saudi leaders or Pakistan leaders and certainly no worse than the dictator Batista that Castro replaced.
It seems the best excuse for banning trade and travel to Cuba is the votes of the Batista supporter refugees in Florida that have become American voters. American political leaders supported by Batista supporters would appear to be questionable to me.”

imedut replied on Feb 22, 2009 at 16:30:00

“Even if the USA lifts ALL travel restrictions to Cuba, the Cuban people will no t be able to travel anywhere. If you don't know it, cubans are forbiden to travel overseas without a permit from the Cuban goverment and a letter of invitation form a foreign country. All documents and air fares have to be paid in US dollars (passport $50) and the cuban worker makes the equivalent on $10 US dollars.
I agree that the embargo, maintained by every US president since Kennedy has not worked. (Last year Cuba was the third in food purchases to the US, something the leftist news mediia does not report) But the real embargo is the one the cuban goverment has on its people and that one even with the lifting of the US one will not change. As long as the Castro brothers continue to own the farm, nothing will change. Imagine Bush and Cheney at the white house for that long!!!!!!!!!....”
