“No, he didn't. And "change WE can believe in" can't be accomplished in this democracy by the president alone. President Obama has followed through on the majority of promises he has made [ http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/subjects/politifacts-top-promises/?page=1 ]. Washington politics is a quagmire, made more entrenched by the excesses of the past 8 yrs. Anyone who thought President Obama could change things overnight is naive, at best. Anyone who doesn't see that prioritizing is important to best resolve the myriad problems that we face doesn't realize that the U.S. govt is a vast and complex (lack of) structure, manipulated in so many ways by corporate interests. No one person could come into this and ramrod his way through to a better way. It seems the only ones permitted to ram their agenda down the American ppls' throats were the last admin, who were conveniently aligned w/ the corporations. On top of the petrified resistance to change that is Washington, our president faces exponentially higher threats to his life and family's, fueled by crazy wingnuts and permitted by their "leaders" on the right. A country brought close to ruin, not by him. No, he is trying to do SOMETHING in order to reestablish what America truly is. Dealing with brats on the right & left whining, under an sensation-hungry media microscope ... if I were him I'd tell all of you to kiss my a$$. But that's not what president's do, is it?”

“Its really interesting reading some of these knee-jerk posts. Gut reactions ... we sure need more of that, NOT! Maybe when you're president someday of what was once the greatest country on earth, trying to keep it all together in the face of the unimaginable (and unknowable to you now) to rebuild after undeniable years of neglect and abuse ON EVERY LEVEL, crazy mofos everywhere threatening your life, fueled by even crazier and irresponsible "leaders", when any of you find yourselves there, then maybe you would have a valid and informed point. No one here knows why the president made this choice but I sense it has something to do with picking his battles.”

Perino will take the job, but don't count on her for any intelligent life. Obama has to include all types doesn't he? He is president of us all. He is doing a good job of not being a supporter of his base. Couldn't say that much about the bush boy.”

However, stats or no, it is safe to say from all the stories told by ordinary folks that 10s if not 100s of thousands of Americans are being screwed by the insurance companies whose goal is only to make profit by any means necessary. They go to great lengths to NOT care for the sick.”

“ok, let's take your point further. Say those accidents, the willfully unhealthy, etc., account for half of the 3600 number. So only 1800 die each month directly because they have no health coverage. That's better? I think you're missing the point.”

“The human cost of medical errors is high. Based on the findings of one major study, medical errors kill some 44,000 people in U.S. hospitals each year. Another study puts the number much higher, at 98,000. Even using the lower estimate, more people die from medical mistakes each year than from highway accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS.
> Institute of Medicine, 2000
Lakewood, Colo. (July 27, 2004) – An average of 195,000 people in the U.S. died due to potentially preventable, in-hospital medical errors in each of the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, according to a new study of 37 million patient records that was released today by HealthGrades, the healthcare quality company.
If we were to accept these studies wouldn't it be better to be a non-insured individual? While I cannot vouch for these figures either, as a pharmacist I have seen some past statistics regarding iatrogenic misadventures (aka doctor- or medically-causes mistakes) and know they're significant.
I believe I often agree with the Mark Twain quote, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."”

“window dressing programs? tell that to Matt Shephard's mother. Not mentioned are the financial sector reforms proposed by the president that the Dept. of Commerce is fighting against. Entrenched standards in Washington are resisting the changes this president has proposed. Too many players already on the court for "the new kid" to come in and make sweeping changes. Incremental steps and a balanced demeanor are the most effective way forward, imho. It's easy to belittle the work that's been done already. It's easy to whine. But the president has always said that real change takes time.
"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who wont agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government cant solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way its been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand." President-elect Barack Obama Nov. 4. 2008”
