Playing football isn't anything like saving a friend from gun fire, saving lives from disease in the Congo, helping feed the homeless, or even doing someone's tax returns for them. He's a football player who made more money than a lot of people who actually have to provide something that is important in a lot of people's lives. If there were no football or any pro sports, guess what, there would be a lot of money acvailable for important things!”

“Why aren't the news outlets reporting that as a matter of routine, the state of Hawaii placed the birth announcement -- it used to be a free service offered at the time. Pres. Obama's mom did not place the ad. Obama Education Plan Speech: Stricter Standards, Charter Schools, Merit Pay
Commented Mar 10, 2009 at 18:01:09 in Politics
“We grade our students and schools; why not Teachers?
Education is one of the rare fields where tenure tends to give way to performance. Any other "job" will require performance in order to keep a job or merit a raise.
I am not a Republican but love the idea of Charter schools. For someone who pays in excess of $100K in property taxes (multiple properties), I want to know why my child's school choices are limited. Competition is good.
I noticed a comment suggesting per capita (per student) funding being prop. tax based. I support it. In Texas, they call it the Robinhood Program and you have no idea how large and powerful the opposition is.
Not all teachers are created equal. We need to weed out the bad teachers and find ways to attract the best and brightest. Teachers work 9 months out of the year, enjoy 1 week for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks for Christmas, and 1 week for Spring break and several holidays in between. Compare that to the rest of us who work a full year w/ 2 weeks vacation.
Let's adapt with the times. Education needs to be prioritized.”

“It's a myth that teachers only work 9 months out of the year. Many teacher work in year around schools. I've been a teacher for eight years and every year, I was mandated to teach summer school. Time off, including in the summer - BTW, the most I've ever gotten was three weeks - is typically spent grading assignments and preparing curriculum, materials, and lessons for the upcoming weeks. We don't get a book of lesson plans handed to us. When I worked in a traditional public high school, I went in at seven, stayed until nearly five for after school homework help and sponsored activities, and would usually fall asleep grading and prepping sometime around 11 and midnight. This, of course, doesn't include additional classes and development I pursue on my own time and at my own expense to keep my certificate valid.
So, don't give me this crap about teachers having such an easy work schedule compared to the rest of the working world. I do more than most people and I do it for less.”

“Such chirpy, sweet-sounding light! Where to begin?
Ah, those school-year breaks. Grade papers or catch up on lesson plans? Never! It's off to Bermuda or Palm Springs for us.
Or those summers languishing on the Cape from Memorial Day to Labor Day? Oops, do I feel like a chump. And here I was working retail to augment my low school pay.
And the school day! What a laze that is: 3:30 and it's off to the club. Thankfully we have computers now to do all the grading for us. I just like to stay up through Letterman and Conan and get 4 hours sleep for fun.
You have your head in a bubble.”

Silenced In Sri Lanka: Government Suppresses Journalists As Fighting Grips Nation

“Pure hyperbole!
Why is Huffington Post allowing Annonymous writers to publish articles? It is one thing to have the media surpressed; it is a whole other thing to have the media manipulated for a political agenda.
I have traveled to Sri Lanka, lived for an extended period of time assisting with Tsunami relief efforts ... and have friends from all the 4 major races - Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher, respectively. Even though I know that Sri Lanka does not practice our brand of American Democracy (i.e. the journalists are surpressed, open-government does not exist, civil rights violations, justice has a price akin to Mexico, etc..) this person's reporting is pure hyperbole.
By the way, I have traveled on those hillcountry buses and trains - what rubbish to suggest that all riders are tamils or that the army pulls the bus over b/c they are tamil. Army (military) check-points have been the norm for the past 15+ years. I know ... I have been stopped many times.
The truth is, people are dying on both sides. Death knows no race. Greed and Power knows no bounds. Obviously, political agenda knows no journalistic ethics, either.
I'd be interested in knowing the race and political affiliation of the writer of this article.”
